I got mine to save on gas and tolls, was about up to 400€ with a very diesel efficient car (BMW 116Ed). Even paying credit for the bike, I'd save about half a month or more. Then the pandemic started before I even had my license, lol, there goes the money saving.
But now my dad has my car (he lives in the UK, but pandemic made him stay here for a year now), so we are a one bike, one POS deadbeat car (2002 Peugeot with more broken stuff than I can count). My GF was already a bike rider before I even had a car license, so now we can divide the bike and the POS car, instead of having just one vehicle to get around with, plus making the POS car last longer by putting less kms in it. My bike being a NC700x with a 52L case, I can fit three full bags of groceries between the met-in and the case.

I have to learn how to properly maintain my bike so it doesn't decay too badly sure but that's also a plus - teaching me personal responsibility.

He asked me if my Oldwing was a 650, and was quite impressed by its 1100 cc’s. “I’ll bet it’ll touch 100 eh!” “It certainly will,” I told him. Then he talked about riding across Spain, and parts of Europe after WW2 on a bike who’s brand he couldn’t recall. But, I started conversations with 4 completely different people. Some who were just curious about the bike, a guy who had a beat-to-hell pickup truck that also wouldn't start. An army veteran and his wife, and a guy who wanted to know what the actual hell my pacific coast was.

as a 64 year old with 2 Victory Motorcycles I am now going to be self conscious about talking to other bikers if I am not riding. for about 40 years my motorcycles have always cost more than any car or truck I owned. I am one of those guys always buying accessories, never ran stock pipes, always trying different tires, endless small mods, changing handlebars, custom paint jobs, etc. Since switching from Harleys to Victory in 2004 I have about 160,000 miles on the Victories and about 18 different length Iron Butt certifications. All while living in Alaska, with a very short riding season. Have made a couple trips to Florida.
I am the old guy that always stops when I see a motorcycle and ask about mods, tires, gas mileage, stage 1 kits, always wondering what to try next. Even run a car tire on my crossroads. I have probably annoyed someone watching this video asking questions about their bike.

When I did my CBT training in the UK, the test centre had Honda CG125’s with 150,000 miles on the clock, driven by learner riders daily. It’s possible for them to last very long but I think careful consideration of the bike, ownership and maintenance from new is essential.

Having a bike to save money in university worked for me, partly. I had a car too, but would remove liability from it during riding season and the bike was half the price to insure. The CBR125 was great on gas in the city, but my Geo Metro actually beat it at highway fuel consumption (and was faster too - a rare thing to say about a Metro). Parking permits on campus were expensive and elusive for cars, but a motorcycle permit was cheap and let you park in more convenient lots (often a widened part of the sidewalk in front of your desired building). Being young and cheap, I skipped much of the riding gear that I now cringe to ride without.

For every woman who thinks you're cool to have a bike, there are ten who think you're (probably) immature, undisciplined, and under-employed. I actually think getting a motorcycle was one of the best financial decisions I ever made. At the time I only had a truck and a bicycle. The truck was annoying cause I could never find street parking, so I just kept it at home where the battery would repeatedly die on me cause I never drove it. Meanwhile I still had to pay something like $100/mo on insurance. The bike cost more like $30/mo to insure and it did end up lasting me nearly 10 years/(30k miles). It was really useful for the kinds of trips I just never could have made on a bike in a reasonable amount of time. The gas consumption was decent, though not as good as good as it should have been given how much smaller it was compared to a car (no wind tunnel tested body?). Maintenance was pretty cheap too. Unlike a car, there really wasn’t much on the motorcycle I couldn’t figure out how to fix myself.

First bike I got was a Suzuki TC125. A true barn find, back in the 80s before "barn find" was a thing. I was a poor kid who had to learn how everything worked so I could get it working. No google, didn't know such things as workshop manuals existed and probably wouldn't find anything but confused blank stares if I asked at my small town's library.
Got her going and kept her going for years. She's still in my garage although she needs more TLC than I can give at present.
She set me up for maintaining vehicles, especially bikes. My other bikes have all gotten well into the 6 figure mark and all in good condition. Only one, a mid-80s Shadow, needed anything significant prematurely, and that was new rings in the first weeks after I got it at around 60,000miles. I have no idea how the PO got them worn without other damage.
It's nothing for cruisers to get into 6 figures if they're maintained. If a car's not maintained it won't get there either. I've seen a number of bikes like litre+ CBR's happily get into 6 figures, even with things like ceasing timing chain tensioners.
Admittedly my experience is mainly with Honda and Suzuki, and other jab brands. But I cannot see why, unless a bike is thrashed and mistreated it won't last quite a long time.
With the price of petrol over here, bikes are far cheaper than cars to run, even factoring in all purchase price, gear, maintenance and registration costs! Of course, lane splitting vs sitting in traffic helps a hell of a lot. As does 1/3rd the engine size hauling less than 1/4 of the weight.

I got a really good deal on a cheap bike and it lasted me well through college until i could afford a decent car. A $500 car will absolutely strand you and/or get you fired, but there abound $500 motorcycles that will get you to and from work/school. add a $30 jacket and a $50 helmet plus negligible insurance/ registration and you have a very low barrier for those below the poverty line. Damn, I hit all three of these... But for real, I'm young, I live in a rural environment, I'm eco-conscious, I'm poor and I'm a lonely lesbian. All that being said, I bought my first bike second hand super cheap from a guy who was moving away and couldn't use it any more, it was poorly maintained and I've sunk almost three times as much as I paid for it into bringing it back to it's former glory. I may have wanted a bike for all the reasons this video says not to, but I always think back to watching my dad put together an old 125 in the back garden when I was young. I think about the motorbike road racing that takes over my country for two weeks ever year, I think about the freedom and the thrill that comes with riding and the responsibility I have when in the saddle. I think about how in looking to ride myself I was able to give riding back to my dad and how we can ride together now and about the stronger relationship we've been able to build because of it. So even if it's marginally cheaper, even if ecologically it's not as bad as a car but still not great, even if I never meet my future partner through riding well... I'm still going to ride, because I want to and in retrospect I've always wanted too. Whatever your reason when you start out, if you enjoy it, if you want to do it, you'll find any reason to keep on going.

I can think of 1 situation where the "save money" approach actually held up: My first bike, a 1972 CZ 175 sport. It was basically ugly, although somehow quaintly "adorable" (Well, to me, anyways), would only breach the 50mph "wall" if you threw it off a cliff (Had a friend with a tricked up moped that was just as fast....mine could brake though, and the insurance was valid) and was admittedly a rather clunky ride. On the other hand I got it for less than what my 50cc moped I upgraded from sold for ready to ride, it did about 70mpg no sweat (Which was a fair achievement for a cheap used vehicle back in the 80's), I could maintain and actually pretty much overhaul it with a bare minimum of tools, it proved nearly impossible for me to destroy (forgot oil in the gas once, had 3 crashes etc. - last crash was a total though ,rammed it into the front of a suddenly left turning car - the car drivers insurance did pay me back about twice my cost of the bike plus the personal injury part - plus I got to keep the wreck for parts), and when it did require a few parts they cost literally pocket money. DEFINITELY not a bike that would increase your luck with the ladies nor would you get ANY sort of bragging rights out of it, but that was not the point. What it did was increase my reasonable "distance from home range" quite a bit, maybe about 3 times, compared to a bicycle or my moped, when kept legal. Yes, the bus could have helped with that too, but at a much higher cost in travel time. The final piece in the puzzle was insurance cost. As an 18-year old in Denmark, there was no way i would be able to pay less than the equivalent of 1500-2000$ a year to ensure a car, but the CZ I could ensure for about 100$, even without any seniority or doing tricks like having my parents ensure it for me, and a few years later I could also transfer earned seniority to my first car ensurance (wouldn't have worked from car to MC, though). For gear, i rode in my moped helmet , a pair of old well waxed leather boots and a waterproof thermo boiler suit i also already had. Not ideal, but worked out just fine. So for me it, all in all, it was a moneysaving solution. But the combination of a fair bit of luck and the rather all-in "No nonsense" approach to brutally keeping costs down was definitely central parts to make it happen. It's not for those fond of looking cool or craving an awful lot in the way of comfort. Had a ton of fun on it, though, and really learned a lot about motorcycling in a comparatively safe way, that I really have appreciated later on.

True. My commute in LA on a motorcycle was 1/3 the time on the bike vs a car and 1/4 of the time vs a bus. And I got free parking in an expensive parking area.
However, it had limits. I remember one day being up on a Malibu beach with friends. I got back to my bike at the same time my roommate got to his car. Pretty heavy traffic. I split lanes pretty aggressively coming back West LA. I only beat my buddy home by 20 minutes (took him 1 hour). When you factor in the time it took me to suit up for the ride, the stress of the ride in that traffic, and the added danger from traveling that way, I probably would have been better off in an air conditioned car listening to music and talking with friends.

And I love riding my bike which also makes a difference. With the car, I'd get in, sigh, and drive to work. With the bike, i'm happy to walk out to the garage and hop on even though I know I'm going to work at least the trip there will be fun.

    • @adam4kq
      @adam4kq 3 роки тому +6

@@savagex466-qt1io Having lived in both Ontario and Quebec, trust me, you don't want privatized insurance. Insurance rates are much higher in provinces with privatized insurance systems because the insurance companies are accountable only to their bottom line. For example, I have friends in BC who have multiple cars, including classics and sports cars, and they pay significantly less than I do for a single car here in QC. We are all about the same age and have clean driving records. To expound, Ontario is fully privatized, whereas Quebec is semi-privatized...Here in QC, we pay for our public liability insurance as part of our vehicle registration fees, but still have to carry a rider from an insurance company for the rest. The result of even a partial public offset makes insurance in Quebec, significantly lower than in Ontario, though not as low as in BC. In short, the theoretical "competition" benefit of privatization is completely undone by deregulating the costs. Yes, here, insurance companies have to compete, but they know they can all charge much, much higher rates.

H&R insurance went from 6k/y third party only to 1k/y fully comp. 6x savings. that alone is a used busa and a grand change
sure my maintenance cost went from 200/year to 1200/year, but remember ive saved a busa on the insurance!
all in all, saving approximately 11k a year!
