  • The Ultimate Badass of the World of Darkness, Sam Haight, is a name spoken with reverence around the world. This man not only overcame the will of Gaia herself and turned himself into a Garou, he also managed to become a powerful Ghoul, Hedge-wizard turned Mage and an Ashtray while doing so!
Join me as we delve into the somewhat outrageous backstory of one of the World of Darkness' most iconic bad guys!

I distinctly recall a conversation with the devs on the old white wolf forum, where they said Sam was never meant to be taken seriously and he was essentially a spoof on all those players who wants to combo all the 'races' together in order to create the ultimate bad ass. So they basically did that, made him into an asshole and gave him a very inglorious ending.
Looking back on my old books... none of the Sam Haigh centric supplement were really good either.

"The Chaos Factor" (or as I like to call it. "Samuel Haight Must Die") is a fun one to read, at least. Less so to actually run as a chronicle. Too thoroughly railroaded, like all of the other "scenarios" White Wolf made for the old editions.

His story is purposefully ridiculous, but "kinfolk who decides to take up arms and fight the wyrm on it's own terms" is a great character for a Hunter.

Splat mixes like this can actually be fun to play, but kind of have to be retired at a certain point. I've actually done a kinfolk mage in a werewolf game and, on the surface, he mechanically worked a little like Sam Haight, but, because of the way character progression works, he was usually kind of an underpowered screwup for most of the game, continually striving for parity and acceptance before having his "ugly duckling" moment right at the end, rather than an overpowered Mary Sue.
His backstory was, similarly to Haight, that he was a kinfolk aware of the Garou who dreamed of becoming one, but he had an awakened avatar, so when he awakened, this manifested as what appeared to be a First Change. He believed he was Garou and since his change was witnessed by other Garou, and his aura and scent seemed to indicate he had gone through the change, he was accepted, but he couldn't shift fully anymore after that. He started with 3 spirit and 2 life (he really couldn't start any other way if we wanted him to smell and feel like a Garou. You could go 2 Spirit and 3 Life but I needed to be able to step sideways for this game), so he could step sideways, communicate with spirits, use moon bridges and appropriate gifts, experience heightened senses and grow claws and lengthened canines and the like, but couldn't fully shift into any form, even Glabro, regenerate health as effectively, or use a bunch of other abilities that should be second nature to him. He was basically seen as a disabled Garou with some sort of unknown developmental issue. He wasn't allergic to silver for some reason and he could sometimes use gifts from outside his auspice and tribe (though he would also fail to learn basic gifts and not understand why), but he also sucked at most of the things Garou are naturally good at.
Throughout the course of the game, as I would develop his spheres, he slowly became able to do more Garou things but, since he didn't know he was a mage, there was a strict rule that he couldn't do anything a Garou couldn't do. No dynamic magic, just werewolf abilities and gifts learned from spirits. It was magic under the hood, and we had to consider out of game if he had the appropriate sphere knowledge to actually perform a gift he might learn, but he didn't know that. Since he was kinfolk and both believed himself to be Garou and carried their blood, anything he did was "coincidental magic", so long as it was a Garou ability, and so paradox rules didn't need to be worried about and we could stick mostly to the Werewolf rule set.
If anyone is curious, to have a kinfolk mage that can convincingly pass as a werewolf, at least as we interpreted the rules, you need: 5 Life (to seamlessly transform at will and get your instahealing and stat increases), 3 Spirit (to step sideways and interact with spirits), 3 Mind (to be able to communicate in wolf form and for Crinos form to induce delirium), 3 Prime (to be capable of perceiving and drawing gnosis and to be able to do aggravated damage in Crinos form), 3 Time (to be able to get extra moves in combat), and 3 Matter (if you want to be able to attune clothing and not always be naked when you shift back). So there is a pretty substantial investment before you are on par with the rest of your team mates. While everyone else is developing all sorts of different skills and attributes, pretty much every drop of experience you get ends up having to go into becoming a better Garou. Also, since you have to invest so much into just being able to do the baseline things all Garou can, certain gifts are forever out of your grasp, since you can only learn gifts whose use can be justified via the above spheres because there isn't a lot of leeway to invest in others, especially if you want to have /any/ experience left to invest in skills and attributes.
Once I got to a point of relative parity, our ST let me sit in that place for a minute, finally able to fully contribute and do all the Werewolf things for a few scenes, and then sort of shifted us into the endgame of the chronicle with revelations that were different for every character, but for me was finally meeting a Verbena witch who showed me what I was. Everyone got a decent power boost at this time, getting unique gifts or powerful fetishes, and I got to finally start using dynamic magic for a couple of investigative scenes and the final battle. It was, all in all, one of the most fun campaigns I've ever played, but there is no bringing that character back. Once you have a fully self aware mage who has developed their ability to the point that they can replicate Garou abilities perfectly with a "get out of paradox free" card where they are concerned and also do all the other things that come with that degree of sphere mastery, you are rapidly approaching Mary Sue territory and it's time for this character to be retired. The journey to getting there, on the other hand, can be a lot of fun.

"Ah Mr. Haight. I would pity him as a lost astray garou if not for him tampering and mixing with the other supernaturals and in his own self sense of ego. Attempted to become something he was never meant to be. I suppose I do pity him still, enough pity to end his life with a bullet or steel, just like he has done to many before him. Well in the end, he learned the greatest knowledge of all. The Wyrm consumes all in time." - A Blackspiral Dancer.
I recall his presence in some of the few Werewolf games I played in, man he was a force of nature and a big source of hatred for the pack... a real menace.
