I understand what you're saying about not thinking it should be "funny." It talks about the selfish nature of the entertainment industry, the exploitation of sick people, the idiocy of consumerism. Humans are creatures of habit and comfort and we hate focusing on the horrors of our world. But that said, it is still satire. And satire is still meant to be funny. "An Indecent Proposal" is hilarious even whilst being poignant. The two are not mutually exclusive.
People are not so stupid.... this is just a caricature. There is a sligth difference between the truth and the caricature. But the truth is more percutant for the true people we are. This difference is hard to reach but this is why there's not so much people able to do make it. Now maybe it was not the purpose, maybe it was just to laugh a bit...it's ok for that.
When Ju said "I'm a maverick" I just died with happiness. I love how he does some of the same things in a lot of his acting!
