My best friend just passed away this week. We met first day of kindergarten in 1969. 53+ years of friendship. He and I loved this song as teenagers. The lyrics and music are still magical. I have thought about the past few decades together with him. Time Passages of joy and brotherhood. RIP Phil
I am so sorry about your loss. My sister just lost her best friend around the exact time you lost yours. 40+ yrs of friendship gone in an instant (aneurysm). Makes you think to make the most of every minute of everyday with the ones you love.

My wife and I just had our first child. A few days after she was born my dad took me out for a beer to celebrate and talk. As we clinked our glasses he said, "to time passages." I've known this beautiful song for years but now these lyrics have a whole new meaning for me. Cherish the time you have with your loved ones, it's fleeting.
Your Dad knows good music! This music is just so beautiful! And so profound! This is music me and your Dad discovered and fell in love with so many years ago! So happy you love it too! It's sooo beautiful! Bless you little big brother ha ha.... DDDave
My friend, I could not agree more with your statement. I lost my mom to multiple strokes earlier this year. Al Stewart was one of her favourite artists. It makes you remember that time *is* fleeting, and must appreciate, remember, and cherish the world and people who hold dear in it. Goddess Bless you, and may your baby grow into someone amazing, just as you are.

My Uncle Stan, may he rest in peace...played this song over and over again at our cottages in Canada back in the 70s. I was 10 then. Please god take me back!
Saw Al Stewart just this year in California 2024. We were truly transported out of this place and lifted to another plane, so thankful to see him live, what a super iconic experience. Love you Al Stewart ❤❤❤❤❤
I was lucky enough to see Al Stewart perform this song live at a small jazz club that no longer exists. My sister and I waited in line just to meet him and say hello. One of the things I’ll remember on my death bed. ❤️
I remember hearing this at the roller rink. Every weekend, we all went there to hang out and that was in the early 1980's with disco balls, fog machines and more colored lights than you could shake a stick at. It truly was a magical time growing up. We caught the end of the 1970's and the beginning of the 1980's at the same time. We had the best of both. Nothing quite compared with going around a roller rink on skates and just hanging with your friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Playing Pac Man or Defender in the arcade. Man we were blessed but we couldn't know it then or truly appreciate it until now. I am 58 this September and I wonder where the time has gone. It gets away from you that fast. But when I hear these songs, it brings you right back. The feelings, the sights, the sounds, the memories all come flooding back and it almost seems like you're in a dream for a short time and the younger you is having some weird dream about the future you. Then you snap out of it and realize, it's the other way around. A guy who was a friend of mine and brought me out of my shell, introduced me to KISS and indoctrinated me into the KISS army died here not all that long ago. We were classmates and friends. My class has lost so many already. Makes me hope that in the afterlife, wherever we go, we have parks to listen to loud tunes in and long summer days that seem like they will never end. I like to think that they are all already there and when we finally make it, we will pick up where we left off and life will be good. Some things about growing up I would never want to repeat but there are other things, a lot of them, I can remember now as if they happened yesterday. Would be nice to get those days back. Days before being disabled and all the problems health wise crept into our lives. Days before marriage and divorces turned us upside down. Days when we never thought of having to say good bye to friends we stuck by through thick and thin. Before life became so complicated.
@Dwight Dodd The sax solo was performed by Tom Scott, who was the bandleader for the short-lived CBS late night talk show The Pat Sajak Show in 1987. He left the NBC version of the game show Wheel Of Fortune, then a few months later, it moved to CBS. Despite hosting his talk show, he still hosted Wheel Of Fortune in syndication.
I lost my dad a little over a year ago. He gave me the gift of cars and music and we loved talking about the 70s. He gifted me his old Marantz receiver that now resides above my fireplace. When I listen to music, the line "I know you're in there you're just out of sight" makes me think of him. Love you dad.
When this came out,I was about to graduate from Unversity and was already a fan of Al Stewart...this stirred a profound sense of longing and a wistful feeling of what might be. Now I'm 64,married for 25 years to the love of my life, and have stood at more gravesites than I would have ever expected . All except my brother and my lovely wife have gone before. I'm not sure being young again would have solved anything, but it's so nice to revisit...
So sorry for your loss, a year I hope you have a lot of people around in this year. It's a tough year. I wish you lots of blessings from God to get you through this next year. May God give you grace comfort peace empathy love in your heart. Peace be with you 🙏
Something about this song struck me in the season of my dad passing last summer. -- In the months afterward I would go back to it as a touchstone for mourning, releasing those hidden dregs of grief. -- Now, it still ministers to me about the great dad I had, the great life I've been blessed with, and the life I'm leading with my wife, our children, and the time passages all around us. Thank you, Al.
@@AlStewart-1met my beloved wife in '76...love this song...brings back so many memories from the late 70's...tragically she passed away in 2018...we had 42 years together...wasn't enough...we had 2 beautiful kids and now 2 beautiful grandkids...I miss you so much Linda ❤
@@-Bodybuilding- My own original music has been influenced by the '70s. I'll be forever indebted to all of the talented artists whom I listened to for so many years.
I was just 7 years in end of 1980 and my family was moving house that afternoon in Brazil. It was such a mess! Suddenly I stopped at kitchen and heard this song on the radio. So many years have passed but I do not forget my child times.....I really miss my parents, my grandma, my child friends, my old school!
It makes me so mad that most stations and most people today only know of Year of the Cat when thinking of Al Stewart. I think this is a much more profound song.
I remember Time Passages getting alot of radio air play when it was released in late 1978. I guess it depend on where you lived. My absolute favorite song from Al Stewart. ❤❤❤💯
A friend made a very strong point years ago. To paraphrase it: Everybody always have an audience. So Al Stewart was and is probably more known than most people think or know
It was late in December, the sky turned to snow All round the day was going down slow Night like a river beginning to flow I felt the beat of my mind go Drifting into time passages Years go falling in the fading light Time passages Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight Well I'm not the kind to live in the past The years run too short and the days too fast The things you lean on are the things that don't last Well it's just now and then my line gets cast into these Time passages There's something back here that you left behind Oh time passages Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight Hear the echoes and feel yourself starting to turn Don't know why you should feel That there's something to learn It's just a game that you play Well the picture is changing Now you're part of a crowd They're laughing at something And the music's loud A girl comes towards you You once used to know You reach out your hand But you're all alone, in those Time passages I know you're in there, you're just out of sight Time passages Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight
You reach out your hand But your all alone, in those Time passages........Perfect description of my present life. The more I've grown spiritually, the more people have fallen away from me and those who truly loved me have since died.
I was a child when I heard this on the Dan Ingram show WABC-AM radio from NYC, and it made me cry how it stirred nostalgia in me knowing I’m not here long, my family everyone will not make it to the end with me. It was a profound feeling of loss and dread for me. I was always ahead for my age and I was reading that was then this is now, it was December just after Christmas and everyone I knew in the world had just passed through my house. I miss them all and today I’m glad this memory brings them all back so vividly since this song placed a marker for my life, my youth, my family. Thanks to Al Stewart, for the memories:)
I think I find this period to be when they actually were about making the push for great music, and not repeat shite we have with nowadays with an abusive music industry.
Time passages all right, I'm instantly transported back to the 70s. Such a delight to hear this song again and relive the wonderful memories of my youth.😊
Isn’t that the truth. Thev70’s were magical. My heart hurts thinking of those days and how we’ve lost so much and so many. This country will never be the same along with our lives.
Thank you so much Al......!!!! Saw you last night at TCan in Natick Mass. October 6 2023. By Far.......one of the most Amazing concerts of my life..........
I will always think of my father when I hear this song. He was 18 when this song came out and the world was at his feet. He's still alive lol, but whenever he talks about growing up in the 70s, he always talks about the music he would listen to. Thanks dad for passing on the memories and your great taste in music.
I love al stewart and firefall as well. To see them both and also guess who also wow. I once went to the clearfied county fair as a little boy and we went to see the pigs they had for show and there was this little baby pig and i said i wish i was that little pig. Everyone around me cracked up laughing! Time passages. I had this album in 1978 and in a few days im going to have it again.
I recall driving home in the midst of a Minnesota winter and hearing this song on my way home, and feeling a warm and wonderful sensation in my heart, and a deep connection with this very classy and wonderful artist. I recall the other songs from this about, Palais of Versailles, Man for All Seasons, Song on the Radio, Almost Lucy. I used to play this to everyone I knew, and, my family specially, it was our song, and still is today. How can you not love this. All of his albums are a work of art.
The sax is played by the legendary Phil Kenzie and the second solo on the album version (heard here) comes when you think the song is fading and about to end, but then Phil comes in to take you away on another glorious flight, aided by glorious strings.
The album version is the only one that counts. Alan Parsons' arranging and those sax solos. And that fade out figure. All gone from the single. Just gets better with time.
Xevier ur so right about the song Time Passages by Al Stewart. Was just sitting here watching it rain think n about my past n remember n the good time s n bad . What a time it was when music came out
Alan Parsons made Al Stewart a pop superstar. Al Stewart had released 5 albums before Alan Parsons came along in 1976 and Al was really just a fair to middling semi-successful folk singer, although very talented. Al asked Alan to produce his 6th album in 1976 which was "Year of the Cat". The songs are all Al's compositions but the production is all Alan Parsons' work. The style of the songs are completely different from what Al had previously released. "Year of the Cat" is clearly a pop album with Alan's production influence all over it. Alan liked to put as many instruments as he could on his songs and that's clearly what you hear on Al's most successful song, "Year of the Cat". The saxophone on "Year of the Cat" was Alan's idea. Yes, Alan Parsons made Al Stewart a pop superstar.
The gift that keeps on giving.Yes,Year of the cat maybe his most famous track. I go back to it from time to time and it delivers every time. When The Sax in particular kicks in,it lifts it up another notch. Genius song writing and performance from a virtuoso artist in his time. Absolutely brilliant.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
Have this album / love this song / makes me tear up / I was young when I bought this and now I'm 70. Time passages ! Song is just as beautiful as when I first heard it !
It's a brilliant song. So many elements to it. Wistful and quirky, but meaningful and profound. Trumps even Year of the cat for me, which is saying something.. The Sax, the strings, the whole arrangement works perfectly.. I go back to it from time to time and I never ever tire of it. . Absolutely brilliant
This song takes me back to a time when my parents were both still alive. We went to look at a vehicle my dad was thinking about buying but changed his mind after seeing and driving it. On the way back home we stopped to eat. This song was playing as we eating. It was one of the last times we were all together as a family. Thank you, Mr Stewart for such a brilliant song that perfectly captures my frequent trips down memory lane

Just saw him in the concert last Friday, and his performance of this song (and all of the songs on his set list) was amazing. He regaled us with stories about why he wrote each song. Great sense of humor.
It was Time Passages and Year of the Cat that made me a Al Stewart fan for life. Loved it's soft rock appeal and the melodies send me back to a simpler time when life was slow and easy. Wish I had kept this album but it wouldn't have done me much good without a turntable.
I’ve always liked ‘70s music, but I’d never heard this one until last year. It’s so beautiful. It gets me straight through the heart every time I hear it.
This a great song. It came out 1978 during my junior year of college. All was great. It was a great time growing up and living in So Cal. A lot of fond memories. Every time this song is played, it brings me back to a better time.
Ive heard this song so many times at work in the background. Never actually heard it. So i found out what it was, and ive had it on repeat for a week now lol. What a song. The feeling of finding something this good thats been around for so long is the best feeling. Nothing compares, nothing like it.
For me, the greatest song that Al ever wrote. What an inspiring piece of music! It really should have been a much bigger hit than it was. Definitely a number one for me, I've always loved it. Thanks again Al. It's a wonderful song. 😊

Thank you for that. bought the vinyl of it and it has no rpm on the case
I bought the cassette version of the album in 1988, and it was the first and only Al Stewart album I've ever bought
Nice first 45❤️
@Dwight Dodd The sax solo was performed by Tom Scott, who was the bandleader for the short-lived CBS late night talk show The Pat Sajak Show in 1987. He left the NBC version of the game show Wheel Of Fortune, then a few months later, it moved to CBS. Despite hosting his talk show, he still hosted Wheel Of Fortune in syndication.
I'm nearly 64. This tune really takes me back. A real joy on "repeat one". Never gets old.

No wonder I'm stuck in the 70's.....
a nice place to be stuck
agree, 💥
A wonderful decade
OMG so sorry xx
Thank you so much for the kind wishes...L L A P
So sorry for your loss, a year I hope you have a lot of people around in this year. It's a tough year. I wish you lots of blessings from God to get you through this next year. May God give you grace comfort peace empathy love in your heart. Peace be with you 🙏
Thank you for the prayers and positive vibes you've sent to me. It is very much appreciated...L L A P
Comforting hugs my friend.
My condolences to u about ur Dad. 😓🙏🏽 Beautifully written btw.
A good father is a blessing indeed! My condolences Thomas.
What a beautiful and refreshing sentiment. And sounds like you were and are truly blessed.BTW you are a good writer!

Listen to all of his music. Great stuff!
Same here
Never get tired of hearing this beautiful song.
And Year of the cat.
Yep, year of the cat is another good one
This song takes me back when times were so simple in the 70's I literally reminisce everything back then
When a magical storyteller gets produced by a genius…
It makes me so mad that most stations and most people today only know of Year of the Cat when thinking of Al Stewart. I think this is a much more profound song.
La otra vez la escuche en la radio.. y no me la puedo olvidar

I remember Time Passages getting alot of radio air play when it was released in late 1978. I guess it depend on where you lived. My absolute favorite song from Al Stewart. ❤❤❤💯
@@ilovegoodsax Maybe at the time of release, but unfortunately no more now.
@@Laceykat66 That's true. You rarely hear Time Passages on the "oldies" or classic/soft/yacht rock stations today.
This man was extremely underated fantistic writer and a classic singer
And I am going to his concert 24 August. He is 77 and I am 70. I have 3 of his albums on vinyl. Ought to be a great time. So I go back n time 50 years

A friend made a very strong point years ago. To paraphrase it: Everybody always have an audience. So Al Stewart was and is probably more known than most people think or know
dont care less about his 'rating,' hes brilliant thats all that matters
absolutely. very underrated; not sure why.
The yrs may not have been good for me. But my ears still work fine. Still listening to this classic
1978 was a great year in music, especially with songs like these!.
Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street" also was released in 1978.
It was late in December, the sky turned to snow
All round the day was going down slow
Night like a river beginning to flow
I felt the beat of my mind go
Drifting into time passages
Years go falling in the fading light
Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight
Well I'm not the kind to live in the past
The years run too short and the days too fast
The things you lean on are the things that don't last
Well it's just now and then my line gets cast into these
Time passages
There's something back here that you left behind
Oh time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight
Hear the echoes and feel yourself starting to turn
Don't know why you should feel
That there's something to learn
It's just a game that you play
Well the picture is changing
Now you're part of a crowd
They're laughing at something
And the music's loud
A girl comes towards you
You once used to know
You reach out your hand
But you're all alone, in those
Time passages
I know you're in there, you're just out of sight
Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight
Its always nice when someone posts the lyrics to a beloved song from years ago. Thank you.
You reach out your hand
But your all alone, in those
Time passages........Perfect description of my present life. The more I've grown spiritually, the more people have fallen away from me and those who truly loved me have since died.

Thank you for this. ❤️
Exactly
You expressed perfectly what this song makes me feel.
Just lost my friend, he sat next to me first day in kindergarten in 1964- I can't believe he's gone 😢
This song is an underrated masterpiece. It’s a shame that it didn’t get enough love when it came out.
It does for those like us, with a soul-heart for great 🎶 conveying our lives
The album did go platinum, though.
It did hit #7 on the HOT 100 & that's very respectable 🖤🧡💙💛.
everyone talks about "The Year Of The Cat"...I'll take this album over that one ANY day of the week.
Got a lot of Love, and bought and paid for a new Mansion.
One of my favorites.. When they wrote music not garbage
They wrote garbage back then. Hell, Stewart even talks about it before playing a live performance of this song.
I think I find this period to be when they actually were about making the push for great music, and not repeat shite we have with nowadays with an abusive music industry.
You got that right. Garbage music now in the 20th Century.
garbage music has always existed, it has just evolved over time
Amen to that
Wow, this is really great music. Too bad that nowadays, radios don't program this kind of music anymore. Thanks for sharing !
Some of the best music from a time when this music soooothed the soul, and still does. So glad I grew up in this time...many great memories of love❣️

Isn’t that the truth. Thev70’s were magical. My heart hurts thinking of those days and how we’ve lost so much and so many. This country will never be the same along with our lives.

I have been loving this beautiful song all my life... and I never get tired of listening to it. It’s eternal 🌌
Had the privilege to see him, The Guess Who, and Firefall at Clearfield County Fair. Best $25.00 I'll ever spend.
I must admit Al's songs have a sensational saxophone solo somewhere in them!!
I love how in the album version the saxophone solo repeats itself. In the single version, the song fades off before the second saxophone solo
Yeah! Check out "Song on the Radio"
This song never gets old. The different instruments, the way it picks up. I like it all the way through.
Timeless music that takes you back to simpler times!
Xevier ur so right about the song Time Passages by Al Stewart. Was just sitting here watching it rain think n about my past n remember n the good time s n bad . What a time it was when music came out
Agreed !
What a beautiful song! I can literally faint and fall through the ground listening to this!……Literally
