We just got our front end back from Gerry Piazza at GP Frame and Wheel. The forks and triple clamps were bent from a lowside crash. Gerry straightened them out, now we just need to put the front end of the bike back together. This is part 1 of a 2 part series that involves re-installing the the forks on our project Yamaha YZF-R6.

The forks have two machined grooves in the outer fork tubes to align from or you can measure from the top of the fork cap to the top of the upper triple clamp with Vernier Calipers or an engineering ruler!

Yes, the 06/7 has a 17mm preload adjuster, 08 and on a 14mm.

Been referencing your video for some assemblies and was wondering if you can help me out by telling me the bolt size and pitch of that bolt youre tightening at 6:30. Ive tried M8 by 1.25, but it doesnt seem to like it so i just wanna make sure thats the right size. Thank you 🙏🏽
@danfzzl Yes, in principle it's all the same. Specific ways in which the clip-ons line up with or attach to the upper triple clamp, or the brake lines are routed, etc etc will vary from bike to bike.
Hi Dave, good stuff as always. One thing I didn't see in the video is how do you make sure that the forks are aligned properly in the sense that once you put your front wheel on it will be straight and aligned with the rear wheel. as you can turn the tubes left and right freely and there is no mark or lock which would lock them in correct position. Cheers!

nice vid, but a small suggestion. it says in the description, that this is part 1 of 2.. so how about putting a "part 1" up in the title? and a part 2 in the other vids title? either that, or put an annotation with a link to the second part, cause i can not find it ANYWHERE.
so to align the front wheel you simply bounce the front end ? i have to take my forks off to get the seals replaced and i wanna save some money buy taking them off and installing them myself
@alonsomilon1 the bolts are 6mm allens for the triples. Is that what you are asking about?

How did you know fork was aligned regard to two calipers at first place?
i have a problem i have a torque wrench but i cant find a head that would fit the bolts what type of tool do you use for this
Hey Dave, is there a way to check if the R6 is an 06-07 or an 08 up model if it dont have the fairings on? without going into the VIN? I know the forks on the 08 and up models have the adjustment lines.

Is it possible for the forks to get twisted within the upper and lower triples? i.e. the upper and lower triples wouldn't be perfectly aligned vertically with each other?
would this process be pretty similar to removing and installing the forks for an 07 gsxr 750?
ay dave, i have a 2012 kawasaki ninja 650r and i plan to chang thhe whole complete front, bbut to put a whole front of a 07 gsxr 600 or a 08 kawasaki zr6, you think any of those would work?
will 08 r6 forks fit on the 07 r6 ? I can get a great deal on 08 forks but i dont know if it will fit or not ?

1:45 how do you know the forks are on straight? Is there markings so you know they are not pointed out or in so the axle slides through properly?

Interesting, but not quite the question I was asking. If it was a car I would say "how do you know the wheels aren't toe in or toe out". I was more referring to how to make the forks parallel on a y plane (horizontal). If your sitting in front of the bike, looking straight at the inside of the caliper brakets, how do you make sure they are both facing forward at a perfect 90 deg angle to the axle.

at 1:05 your talking about having the rough side in and you twist the fork around to show the smooth side. How do you know when the caliper bracket is facing perfectly forward and will be at a right angle to the axle once the wheel is on.
If you watch the video carefully you can see him spinning the lower castings around where the axel slides in but it does not look like the actual fork is spinning. Therefore that would mean as long as you install both forks at the correct height, the axel will have no trouble going in because both of the castings can rotate. Tightening the axel for the final part of installation will square the casting to the axel. Hope this cleared it up for you.

Correct. lol. I eventually figured this out last year when I had the seals replaced on my 06 YZF-R6.
