Performance Uprades YZF-R6- Removing the Entire Front End

  • In the last episode of Performance Upgrades, Gerry Piazza of GP Frame and Wheel told us we had bent forks and triple clamps. Many times these expensive components can be straightened. In order to do so, the parts need to be removed from the bike and shipped away. If your triple clamps were toast, you could get a set of Attack triples at sportbikewrench... , the sponsors of this fine series by OnTheThrottle.

    Your right! the nut on top of the head was loose enough to unscrew by hand. We got it fixed. Thanks for the feedback.

    @ChrisMag100 different brands have different methodologies for steering head bearings based on bearing and race type, therefore different torque values. In the case of the R6 and the VFR 400 race bike, the lower castle nut goes on hand tight to start, then you look for side to side movement and adjust accordingly. I generally use a C Spanner to set it snug then come back very small amounts until I get the movement I am looking for. The the upper lock ring is installed and set appropriately.

    Thank you sir for the great video. I was not sure if the exaust was actually strong enough to support the motor.

    @irontruck but in the end, you know the bike is perfect, so riding it with confidence is a little easier. Given that the salvage bike market is going gangbusters and used bike sales are way up, we hope that this helps riders realize the value of getting the bike measured and then apart to check it thoroughly!

    @ChrisMag100 I recently replaced the steering stem on an '09 ZX6R. The lower castle nut was only slightly more than hand-tight. On the other hand, my SV650's castle nut was tightened to something like 45 ft lbs (61 Nm).

    might have loose steering head bearings. Put your hand on top of the triple clamps and while holding the brake on, push down on the bars. Does it "clunk" or knock? If so, that's the most likely cause

    How did he lift up the front end at 1:40 so easily???

  • @OnTheThrottleTV
    @OnTheThrottleTV  12 років тому

    okay - you need to remove the forks from the bike. When you put them back in, one will go easily but if the other one is a struggle, the lower triple clamp is bent. Make sure both bars are even too as the crash will have moved one.

    @vaiosoft You need to get the front end up in the air and loosen the lower then upper triple clamps. Go to the onthethrottle web site and look for 2 clicks out 16. That shows you what to do step by step. Mirror what I do to Kristi's bike.

    At 5:33 what do you mean by loose track of them bolts? So you definitely should replace them straight away even if they ain’t damaged?

  • @ChrisMag100
    @ChrisMag100 14 років тому

    Question: Your lower castle nut was hand-tight on the R6. I've seen fairly high torque values on steering head castle nuts on other bikes. The Aprilia specification for the lower lock ring on the RSV4 is 70 Nm, for example. Is the R6 unusual in this respect?

    I recently had a guy bring me his bike and ask me to work on it. It had been involved in lowside and the front end plastics and lights broken, I place it on my stand and noticed when I made the wheel straight that the handle bars are very slightly if barely noticeable to the left, forks are not leaking and the don't look bent, he's trying to spend less amount to get it on the road. What would you suggest? I have lil knowledge in structure damage but , like I said it's not really noticeable

    was checking out my friend new 11 R6. when i push down on the front forks, i hear a light knock at the top of the forks... Is this normal? When i test ride it down a normal street in my neighborhood it almost feels like its topping out or bottoming out on the smallest bumps. Not sure if this is normal being a more race ready bike than most other 600s and having a stiffer suspension?

    hey I'm looking into buying an 04 r6 it was put down but not to hard the fairings are messed up but im not to concerned with looks right away. Im new in the bike world. im mechanically inclined and i can figure things out pretty by myself. Just wanted some advice what i should look over before i make any decisions i may regret. And whats a decent price to pay for it. 17k miles and it was dropped at the begging of last season and ridden all season like that. full yosh. thank you

    Does anyone know the length of the forks on this bike, I am considering them for a swap to a SV650, that is if they will work for sure ? From the axle center, to the top cap of the forks. Thanks..
