How I built my first Gundam Diorama!

In this video I show you how I built my very first Gundam diorama. The idea for this diorama is quite simple. A lone warrior has long left the battlefield in search for a quiet life in the woods.
I'm using a RG 1/144 Red Astray and a small wooden japanese hut as a centerpiece for this diorama. During the build process I learned several techniques that are all very new to me: building my own rock pieces out of plaster of paris, dry brushing rock cliffs, creating my own miniature trees, using a static grass applicator, scratch building simple wood buildings.
It was a long and tedious journey, but one that was so very satisfying. I hope you enjoy this video and the diorama. If so, please consider liking and subscribing.

For real though. This is one of the better Gunpla channels. Some others might have fancy editing and stuff but your voice over and humor really make it better than the others. ….not to say the editing and video on these aren’t nice 😅

I've been looking around to see if I could easily get some of these model kits. I do like the one you've made here!
For some reason it makes me think of Zero from Megaman. Honestly wouldn't mind seeing a custom inspired by him (or anyone from any of the Megaman series, really.) Since I think that they're pretty fitting for the aesthetics that many of the Gundam / Gunpla models provide

Seeng how exited you are, makes me start to make dioramas and miniatures again) I stoped, when i moved some time ago.

If you would like to have a protip: I took out all the runners and folded the lids of the boxes so that they would be flat and stored everything seperately in the suitcases. Runners inbetween clothes and then the folded boxes on top :D

I'm currently working on some gundam diorama projects for my best friend wedding but still contemplating wether to continue the project or not because i get scared that it might not even be good or worth. I'm currently working on a diorama with hg strike freedom but still contemplating wether to used strike freedom or just freedom because my friend never really specified which one he likes more so I'm thinking like "well let's just made two dioramas for each gundam" and that's the idea for now..

I dream with burnout by stepping away and working on other projects. I have a lot of unfinished or just started work. I jump back and forth working on projects as i feel like it. But I'm a hobbyist so i have that luxury
Getting a cool head is so important. Lately, I've gotten into painting Warhammer miniature figures. So whenever I've gotten tired of Gunpla, I switch things up.
You did a really nice job i learned alot. ive been trying dioramas for a couple of months. Do you think you will do more dioramas i hope, i think you can help me get better.
Hey, I'm happy that the video was helpful to you. I was so hesitant with starting such a big project, but once I began I somehow got into the flow and the process was so enjoyable. Thank you Natale! Yeah, it's a quick solution if you don't have plastic molds. Drawback is that you won't get a deep rock texture, as the aluminum foil will only take that much weight.

Looks great. I do have to say though why not just use the foam to make the stone look. This can be done by making a small cut then pulling. The break looks like rock. Takes way less time and money.

Idk if you will see this as the video is a month + old but when you made the sculpt a mold to fill it gaps did you brush just regular plaster of paris over the rest of the diorama to give it that all white look?
Hi, no worries, I read all the comments. This channel is still rather small and the interaction not as fierce as with bigger channels. So I catch most of the comments.
It's just as you said. The gaps are sculpt a mold and the rest is just plain plaster of paris. There was no need for further sculpting, just a plain even field. So plaster of paris was perfect for that case.

What did the tool you made for the grass do ?
It's adding static to the grass so that when I sprinkle it on the surface, it stands up instead of falling flat to the floor. Unfortunately, you can't really see it in the footage, but it adds some realism and volume to the entire grass surface.

Seriously though, wow. This sent me back all the way to my childhood when I attempted to very poorly create 'dioramas' myself. (In ANFUEHRUNGSZEICHEN, bc it rly isn't the same thing.)
Love how creative you got to find solutions to problems you encounter throughout the project. A bit of a bummer with the 'cottage cheese', as the lovely textures of your GESTALTUNGSGIPS got a bit lost in them, but overall, once you've painted it and everything, it looked awesome nevertheless.
When you said it took you months, I almost fell off my chair lmao. I mean, it makes sense for such a big and kind of ambitious project, but I still didn't expect it! Definitely worth all the work though. It looks absolutely fantastic, really.
Good call also to step away from it after experiencing creative burnout as well. It's very common and I have it a lot, too. There's no point in trying to push beyond it, because as you said, in the end it will result in sloppy work and disappointment. It already took so long, so it doesn't hurt to give it a bit of extra time!

It was three months on and off in total, because there were days after work where I didn't feel like working on it at all. Even though I must say it's a great way to wind down after an office day.
Yeah, each project will teach you something new about yourself, so that next time you know how to deal with it. I like those challenges.

I followed your instructions and did a hut like yours and the hill idea. The thing is, I made the hut based on your instructions and work. Also the idea for the hill with the path is your idea. That's a good question. It would depend on the size and complexity of the scene. I have never put a price on my work tbh and there has never been any request for commissions. So it's hard to say out of the blue. But thanks for taking an interest :)

May I ask what sand you used for the background?
Hey, I bought a pack of fine modelling sand for this. But honestly, if you access to just regular plain in the nature, take it and sift it. Much cheaper haha.
what happens when i use sea sand
I see no problem with using sea sand. Wash and rinse it beforehand though. Just to be safe, I don't know what residue salt would do to your paint.
28:25 is that diluted tack glue in the dropper?
I'm not too familiar with the english terms, but if tack glue is the same as PVA glue, then yes.

Der Destiny ist vom Design eher auch mega nice. Hab die MG Version und möchte mir in Zukunft auch noch die RG Version holen. Gundamdesigns mit Flügel sind einfach chefs kiss :D
