If you go to 17:22 of the Watch Me Jumpstart documentary that recently came out about the recording of Alien Lanes you can see that they were using a type ii Maxell 90 min tape. Type 1 tape isn't generally used with portastudios as it's less durable than type ii tape and these machines aren't biased for them. But I have used type i tape in a portastudio before and it sounded fine to me so go figure.
@@Govier in the article "That Time We Recorded Game of Pricks" their bassist talks in detail about them using type I tape and how the recordings used eq tricks to compensate for this.
annabelleshaus huh ok that’s cool! They must’ve recorded some songs with type I and some with type ii on the same album because the documentary I saw had them using type ii while recording a song. I think I read that article you’re talking about awhile back but it’s been awhile. I’ll check it out again. Thanks!

i had the MT4X like a dummy lost it to a pawn shop
Would've been more accurate and lofi on type 1 tape. This is what they used in a Tascam portastudio to record alien lanes and other records.
