My music is streamable across all services. This song is yet to be released. Recorded to type ii tape on a Tascam 488 and mixed down to type ii tape on a Tascam 302. Recorded with an electrovoice re10 mic, golden age pre 73, presonus studio channel, and klark teknik kt-2a (la2a clone). Electric guitars were direct. Sorry I haven't been uploading lately. I've recorded a bunch of stuff and just n...

Many different artists over the years have played and recorded this song. The rendition of the song I'm playing in this video is the way Mississippi John Hurt played it. I played this song in C Standard tuning. The guitar I used is a Yamaha FG-340.

This song and the rest of the album can be heard wherever streams are strum. My bandcamp is also below: govier.bandcamp.com/album/little-falls One thing I forgot to mention was that the electric bass was recorded direct and went from a Golden Age Pre-73 (Neve 1073 clone) preamp into a Klark Teknik KT-2A (LA-2A clone). Recorded on type ii tape with no dbx.

I got a comment that I should do a video on how I mixdown my cassettes so here we are. I'll do one for my 4-track as well. Not sure if I'll end up releasing this song or not so I figured it was a good one for the video. More of my music can he heard wherever you can stream under the name Govier. All of the synth was played on an Arturia Minibrute. I freaking love that thing but I do plan on get...

Do you think using this as “summing” to tape with multiple busses then back to your DAW for mastering would be cool?
Oh boy I do love it when people use outboard gear ❤
I love this man!! I have a broken 246. I love the preamps , but the deck doesn’t spin at all. Do you have any insight on repairing these things? I’d love to hit you up on IG if you have it
this people performance was interesting i like it
Icehead hits so fuckin hard
What a set list 😢
📼👌💯🙏🌅
I would like to ask you, I am about to buy a portastudio and I can choose between a Tascam 488 MkII, with 8 channels, and other 4-channel options. Don't the 8 channels reduce the quality by half when dividing the tape into 8 parts? Is that so? (my intention is not only to record on the portastudio but also to dump my recordings from logic pro to give them texture and warmth, that's why I'm concerned about dividing the tape into 4 or 8.) Thank you for your music, we listen to it here as if you were a classic from the 90s :)
Hi! I'm coming from your bandcamp. Admirable songs. I like them as much as Slanted and Enchanted. I remembered how good the drums sound on portastudio. I'm on the same plan, learning and taking advice from your channel. Hugs and thanks for the songs and the recording of the process.
Nice work fellas. Love seeing the old 4 tracks getting used.
it was playing on the tascam and recording in logic what cable did you use and can you use a cd recorder instead of tascam ?
After ur gone
you can really hear Sam's background vocals here its so cool
holy guacamole black hair is heavenly here
Great Video. Good explaining. I like it !
Sounds lovely!
Thank you
sick it has a Foo Fighters vibe
Super cool ! Cool channel and music) I was wondering how you do to make your vocals sound this "lofi", any mics, pedals or specific EQ ?
It was an old electrovoice mic (almost no high end) and then the vocals were recorded through a golden age pre73 into an la2a clone. That signal was sent to a memory boy delay pedal which took off even more high end and I think gave it a very lofi sound. Thanks for the compliments, Anthony :)
Hey I’m recording a little indie ep on the the Tasman 488, was just wondering how you got the vocal delay, was it just 1/4” from ur mic pre into a guitar pedal?
Yeah thats how I add all of my vocal effects
one of my favorite songs off of metal target! Beautiful to come back to this one. the video is so cool, surprised I've never seen it. The song with the visuals is really persona, kind of makes me feel like i was there LOL
Thanks so much, Joey.. The original is by a guy named Wholewheat. I really love his music.
Such an awesome album dude. I listened to it at work today. Moving and transportive. I love the blatant imagery as well.
dope stuff!
👏niice
Sounds much better than protools and its analog plug-in emulations
Thanks, Danny. I think they both have their place I just prefer this kind of production for my own music and have for many years. I appreciate the compliment though and am happy to hear you like the tunes.
@@Govier I'm a big fan of your music
This is so cool, your voice and songs always sound amazing dude! Love the production on this 👌🏻
Thanks a lot Sleeping Orchard. I’m glad you like the tunes. I’ve been digging your singles on Spotify. I will be releasing an album here soon. I just have a couple more songs I want to record. I just got my tascam 488 back from being serviced. Hope things are going well across the pond.
@@Govier Oh good! I’m glad you’re approaching enough material for a new album, and it must be liberating having the Tascam back! I love your sound, love your studio, love it all so really looking forward to your new work!! 😃 All’s good across the pond, thank you 🙏
Nice vibe. Do you ever play shows in the area? I'd definitely go
Thanks so much. I have before but it’s pretty sporadic. I don’t have any social media so the only marketing I do is locally with flyers. I live in a very remote part of southern Oregon and don’t go on tours or anything like that.
@@Govier I'm also in S.O. hit me up next time you play
Love your vids, bro! Super inspiring. Backing vocals and harmonies were dope. (That Golden Age pre-amp has been popping up a lot, recently, in my world. I think it sounded pretty good.)
Thanks a lot, Niles. Funnily enough I felt I flubbed the first vocal harmony and it was bothering me a bit on this recording haha. Yeah the original golden age pre-73 is a fantastic preamp. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s got insane amounts of gain. I got mine 6ish years ago on reverb for I think around $200. I have no idea what they sell for nowadays. I have noticed that the EV mics I favor have also skyrocketed in price. I didn’t pay more than $120 for any of the older EV mics I currently use. I had an EV-635a but I lost it within the past couple of years. I think I paid like $70 for that thing.
channels and tracks are 2 different things on that machine.
Yeah they are. It's an 8 track machine with 8 channels.
Sounds amazing holy shit
Thanks man I'm glad you enjoyed the track.
Great sound. Love that early 90s indie vibe. It's my favourite vibe. Would you be kind enough to share your thoughts on mixing /bouncing the drums down to one for more tracks? Mono drums on tape sound awesome. Excellent work.
Thanks Kevin. Yeah I usually record the drums all on separate tracks and then bounce them down to one track. If I'm on a 4-track I'll even bounce those drums down again with bass and a rhythm instrument. By the time the drums are done it's the 3rd generation bounce. If I bounce to an external tape machine when finishing the track it'd be 4th generation.
sounds dope
Thanks Blake
sounds awesome ! will it be released anytime soon?
Thanks so much.. I'll definitely be releasing new music soon.
always been a big fan of your music and videos demonstrating your recording process, I found out about the marantz 4 track because of you. I have a 424 mk3 myself. Have you ever used an external mixer in front of the tape machine ?
really really nice! I like that youre recording on tape. I would love to hear more people doing that
Thanks for checking out the vid Felix. Recording without screens is fun for sure. Even the digital portastudios are fun because it’s just you and the machine without plugins and such.
Well done that sounds great!
Great to see your recording process and love the 90’s vibe of the finished track (reminds me of Pavement).
Thanks for checking out the vid. I’m definitely a Pavement fan so there’s some influence there for sure.
This song is rad Govier! Thanks for sharing the process!
Thanks Jason.
Dude, I feel like I’m back in the 90’s. Super cool approach and nice synth sounds!
Haha thanks for stopping by. Glad you enjoyed the vid
On some Portastudios like the 244 and Porta One and Porta Two you can't disable the DBX feature.
That is true
Nice one. Pretty good! Is that all recorded dry into the Tascam? I don't hear much reverb. Maybe a tad on the vocal. Or maybe the double vocal makes it seem like a bit of reverb.
Thanks man. Nothing was recorded dry into the tascam. Everything was recorded either through a presonus studio channel with a or through a golden age pre-73 to a klark teknik la2a clone for compression. Every track has quite a bit of compression going on. If there was reverb on the vocals it was through a keeley 30ms pedal. Thanks for stopping by to check out the tunes.
@@Govier No worries, keep at it. Good stuff.
Really good video, this. Very helpful.
That's a really cool track. Thanks Govier for sharing your talents. Happy recording. Paul.
Thanks for stopping by
Beautiful.
Thank you bleep boxes
Chokebore and Guided by Voices Vibes! Great!
Exactly what I wanna do with my beats. Mpc to 8 track to daw. How many line outs does that unit have?
4 line outs. If you’re just going to send the whole master from your MPC to tape I’d suggest a regular tape deck. The lower speed of a regular deck also adds more tape saturation
@@Govier thanks bro
You do anything for the hiss?
No I don’t. I record with dbx noise reduction sometimes but that’s about it.
Sounds great bro ! Just gave me some inspiration
I appreciate that. Be sure to share some of the stuff you make and I’ll check it out.
I've got a Tascam 302 which still works well, rarely used. I used mine about the year 2000. It's in good condition. If interested in getting it, let me know.
Also, would you ever do a physical release for any of your projects? I'd honestly love to have something of yours in my library
This sounds so good! I'm really excited for the new album!!!!!
Thanks so much Joey. This is heavier sounding stuff that probably won't be on the newest collection of songs. It will be released at some point though. I haven't done any physical releases in some time now.
