We put Hakkapeliitta tires on all our cars and can wholeheartedly agree that these are the best snow tire you can get. We ordered R3's for our '21 Model 3 Long Range as well. Love the content. Always anticipating your new stuff!
I live north of Finland near Polar circle and have driven my e-golf two winter on Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3. They are best non studded tire what I have owned! Hope that you have safe travels on them!
Thanks for sharing!
Hey Kyle, definitely do a video of going uphill on a snowy or icy road, and a panic stop so people can see how much better snow tires are vs all seasons in wintry conditions.
Looking forward to more road trips. I know you said the last segment of your summer road trip is boring but a lot of us like those videos.
I picked up Pirelli P-zero Winter tires for my Model Y. First impressions they are amazing. Feel like an all-season on dry, and amazing grip in the snow.
I'm in Loveland as well. This winter I finally got a dedicated set of snow tires and wheels and it's made a huge difference in my winter driving. I have a 2012 Chevy Volt. But it's nice to finally see some other electric cars
I recently watched a video on the TFL channel made by the team of your neighbors from Boulder Colorado using all weather tires on Tesla Model Y in snow. Those folks seemed positively impressed about tires. I have never knew about the existance of those type of tyres.Yet it would be nice for you to redo the test since your testing is always thorough. Thanks.
I like it when you do efficiency runs
I live in Boulder, was born in Asheville NC, I had hoped to try out your track. I look forward to hearing about the track in Colorado. Welcome to Colorful Colorado! I love all your videos!
0:25 Uh. I'm pretty sure that's The Doctor running around in the background. Is your other EV the Tardis???
Looking forward to seeing some range testing with winter tires. I do think they effect range a bit more but if you could get a list of maybe 5 low rolling resistance winter tires for an ev to help maybe shrink the wall as they say to make buying easier. Love the channel. Thanks
Wow, CO is a great place, I hope you're happy there
I loved living in colorado. Was great to be able to go for a drive up into the mountains at a moment's notice. Estes Park is my favorite place ever. Enjoy Colorado!
Welcome to Ft. Collins! We live in Loveland. Love your road trip videos. Living vicariously through you right now 👍
Awesome!
Welcome to Colorado.
Thank you!
I’ve run Nokians on my Audis for 25 years. Good to see your recommendations for a Model 3 setup using the R3s. I’m supposed to take delivery of a M3 LR in early October so will need a set of winters shortly after.
It's been since 2003 that I cared about snow tires, back then it was Blizzaks from Bridgestone, they were a lot of fun on my Audi TT Roadster at the time.
Are you following me? I loved watching you in NC when I loved there 2 months ago, now you're here driving down the same roads I am here in NoCo! Welcome and I'll see you around town.
I have used both Nokian Hakka 3, and Continental VikingContact 7 for the last 15 years i Norway. And they both performe excellent in harsh winter conditions. My personal favourite are the Continentals. They’re a bit less noisy compared to the Nokains (rumbling). I drive Nokian on my Audi E-tron 55 and Continental on my Tesla Model 3. Looking forward to more winter content from you. Keep up the good work.
Are they studded or friction?
In my personal experience, I found that more aerodynamic wheels (closed design) gives better range on the highway. I originally was in the mindset that lower weight was more important...but I don't believe that to be the case anymore. I wish Martian would make a forged Uberturbine like design!
Running on Continental Vikingcontact 7 tires, amazing winter tire. ASA GT14 wheels as well.
that intro though, i was confused.... wasnt sure if it was takumi making his way to a tofu delivery or what... LOL nice drifting skills!!!
Congrats on the move, I love CO!
I have 18" R3 SUVs on my Y. Good choice!
I’m down in Golden and scheduled to pick up a m3p on Tuesday. Have a set of Michelin Pilot alpin pa4’s ready to go on the ubers. Little bit worried about running low profile snows and the range, but should handle a bit better in the dry
Who knows if we'll ever see snow again here in Central AR... All-season FTW!
I live in Loveland so I love the local perspective! Welcome to Colorado :)
I wanna live there too. But it's too far away.
@@KK-up3pq But if you live there then it won't be so far away.
Welcome to CO! I'm in Boulder. There are some killer canyon drives on the front range. Hakka R3's are great, a bit of that gummy bear feel on dry roads, but ace's on snow and even ice. Studded Hakka's are the ice king's imo.
I use the “depart at” feature when travelling long distances in my model Y - and it does a decent job of “conditioning the cabin” but I discovered by accident here in Canada when it’s cold, you need to run the climate on shore power for nearly 1 hour to “ condition the battery” or your efficiency really suffers. In know Y has heat pump and octo valve but the new 3 will also have this - In fact if I open the app and start charging and climate from the app when car has has been “ cold soaked” I get 0 mph charge rate on a 40 amp breaker - it all goes to climate for about 30 minutes then charge rate ramps up.
The Hakkapelitta R3s are pretty standard around here in Sweden. IIRC, Tesla sell R3s on their winter tire set here. I got third party tires (Tesla rims though) and picked Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance+. So far they seem pretty great too. 😀
Hakka R3. Popular choice i the nordic countries! Excellent tires!!
Will be interested to see your trips around Colorado. Charger options are more limited compared to NC but Colorado itself is pretty good. Would be nice to highlight the major gap that is Clayton, NM when going to Austin, etc.
Wow i am so excited to see more of Colorado.
Regarding test: all of them :D I don't know how interesting this comparison is for other people, because it is very topography dependent, but: How about a comparison between low and standard regen driving up and down a mountain pass in snowy condition? It would show the different efficiency and also could show new EV drivers what the differences are regarding breaking and slipping usw.
Anyway: Awesome video as always.
Maybe you can test the new CrossClimate 2 and see if they can change your mind on all-seasons?
I'm also curious about the CrossClimate 2. Some of us love the snow, but only get to visit snowy areas a few days a year and dedicated winter tires don't make sense.
Kyle, a lot of us would like to see your 0-60 test and efficiency test for this wheels/tires setup. Also please compare your 225/50/18s to your previous 225/45/18s with regard to the 0-60 and efficiency.
I went with a Michelin X-Ice/snow 255/40 R20 for my Y performance with a T Sportline package as they send the tires mounted with sensors all you have to do is swap them out and set the wheel setting inside to recalibrate the speed. In CA you are required to carry chains when traveling you must be in possession to be allowed to clear chain controls. I doubt I will ever need to use them. In all my 35 years of winter driving I only had to chain up my 4x4 Tundra once.extreme ice conditions and i had to get to Avalanche control duty. The Koenig chains that Tesla recommends are superior to any other cable system imo. Thanks for the video and the best advice if you don’t need to be out there stay home by the fire 🔥 Doing a video with these chains would be interesting to see how much more you could push the car.Tesla recommend that chains are to be mounted on the rear if you could address that would be great.
Here in Nova Scotia we refer to all season tires as summer tires.
You should drive out here to Cali if you want to see even more beautiful nature! I'm watching this video even though I haven't see snow in 15 years 😂 wish it snowed in LA
I'd love to see an effeciemcy comparison between the Martian 7.5 x 18 wheels and the 18" stock aero wheels with their covers. I bet lots of folks will be coming from the stock 18s and wondering if the narrower Martian MW03s are close in efficiency in real world tests.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 FTW!
I look forward to the opening of the Out of Spec EV Performance Driving School. :)
One day!
As a Finn I am quite sad to say that Continental Viking Contact is better winter tyre than Hakkapeliitta. 225/50 tyre and 7,5J18 wheel sounds really good for Model 3 size car.
I have Martian 18” with Michelin CrossClimate SUV’s for my MY. Next year I will be installing Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4’s on my Gemini 19’s. I love the Nokian’s Hakki’s, I believe the Alpin PA4’s out perform the Nokian’s as far as all around driving, IMHO.
Kyle, I would LOVE to see you do a shoot out comparision battle for the efficient tire wheel setup for the Tesla Model 3 Performance. There are literally millions of recent M3P buyers, like me,😎👍, looking for the IDEAL setup for maximum range and efficiency. Please I think it would be AWESOME content!
I'm still scratching my head why Tesla's choice for tire and wheel sizes isn't a better balance for efficiency. They spend a lot of effort to make very small gains, but seem to have left a lot on the table with wheel weight.
Producing a light weight wheel might drive up costs and that's not the goal for the model 3.
@@jonathannovio3033 They could save $500/vehicle, and about 80 lbs if they just used an off-the-shelf 16" steel rim. And the tires wouldn't be so vulnerable to pothole damage and the ride comfort would be much better. Yes, you'd lose a bit of cornering performance, but most people don't care for their car to ride like a go-kart.
@@steinwaymodelb i think that’s the goal for the model 2
One of the first american who knows the importance of REAL snow tires!
track mode explained, track mode best settings for snow drifts.... tips for drifiting with that instant torque in the Tesla.
Nice, love driving in snow! In Russia we also think Nokian tires is a great choice for the winter
Would love to see Tesla traction control tested to the limit in snow ❄️
215/55R18 Cross Climate 2s mounted on V2 Aero's (shaved rear calipers) on my P3 are saaaaaweeeeet ! and got 258Wh/mi average on my near-bi-annual SF->Bullhead City, AZ road trip (my Dad's house). 255/35R20s Pilot Sport 4S's mounted on 20x9 ZeroG got 335Wh/mi on same drive, by comparison.. However, I just put some XL load- rated 225/55R18 Falken's on the same Aero's to boost towing load capacity and they are superbly indestructible on the same road trip, and 272Wh/mi. The 225/55R18 XL tires are rated 1,874 lbs vs 1,389 lbs of stock 235/35R20 TO MPS4S and have swallowed straight bathtub sized pot holes with reckless abandon
Best snow tires in the world. The Fins invented snow tires and with their climate they have the best testing grounds. Hakkapilettas rock!
I have ran Nokian WR 3 and 4 and been very happy with them. We don’t get that much snow in Ireland so this year in trying the Michelin CrossCliamate as a mid point to deal with the ice and cold temperatures. I wondered if there was a discount code for tyres or wheels?
I'm in NC, I'd love to meet you at the track😊
I use the R3 on my m3 here in sweden, its a great tire but i find it somewhat noisy. Have you tried the continental vikingcontact 7? They get great reviews over here, im going to try them once I wear out these r3s.
Like your advice about replacing the larger stock rim with a smaller/ light weight rim for winter to help with the range. I have a model y with 20” stock wheel and looking at winter tire & rim options
Will you make dedicated video on how to put on 225/50r18 winter tires for M3 ? Would be very interested to have a full details and points of attention for DIY
How does the clearance look with this setup in the wheel well?
TeslaBjorn´s tires, could only be the best for winter! :)
Is there any wheel /tire set to get more ground clearance for a Model 3 without changing suspension components? Also, it looks like your rims are further from the ground, the tire looks "taller". Also I already put on some flexible low mudflaps because I anticipate that the snow tires I plan to get will kick up more sand , slush etc.
New Michelin all-weather directional tires it's supposed to be the best all-around tire and still really good in the snow and really good on dry and rain
I just put on 18" Martian Wheels, after having my Model 3 Performance for one year. Much better efficiency seen now. Ride quality is much better. I put Pirelli P Zero All Season Electric (electric is part of the description) tires, in the 235/45/18 size. They look very wicked. I highly recommend these. My rims are 7.5", but I think you'll have equally good results with the 8.5" width.
Daughter just got a 2022 3 performance. We got 18" wheels from TSportline and put on Michelin Crossclimate 2: 235/45/18. Anyone interested in the original 20" wheels/tires - less than a month of use. Michelin all seasons are fine for NJ. At $300/yr for swapping wheels, don't want to.
@@davesax11 I'm saving my original 20" uberturbine wheels so I can put them back on the car when I trade the car in for a newer M3P.
Great video!
What are the best 20 inch all season tires for the M3P? I take delivery of my M3P next week and live in the Midwest. I plan on changing the tires come November/December but don’t want to buy new rims, would ideally just want to switch to all season tires and come back to the original tires sometime later on down the
Will these work on a Model Y as well?
Great quick run of a new tire for the Tesla 3. Curious if the 18 inch rims will fit on the 2021 Tesla 3 Performance? Also how do the Martian wheels handle the bad, potholed roads of my area (NYC)?
I put Pirelli P Zero All Season Electric (electric is part of the description) tires, in the 235/45/18 size. They look very wicked.
Hello! Is that the Standard Range Plus?
What are the names of those rims? I'm looking for rims such as these right now!
Could you please tell me the exact tire size you are using?
Hi, what color are these wheels?
I like your video but I need to get more ground clearance. Will the 225/50/R18 give my 2018 Model 3 LRDM more ground clearance? Thanks!!
What about 4x 235/45R18 Pirelli WINTER SOTTOZERO 3 tires that Tesla provides ? would you recommend and any thoughts about Michelin x ice snow ?
Wouldn't the correct size be 235/50/18 ? Thx!
I live in Palisade Colorado
Hi everybody, would a 225/50/18 fit well on a standard 8.5 width rim? I am looking for a set of Continental Viking 7 in that size.
Want to see snow driving! In hilly conditions!
TSportlines aren’t the best?
Hey Kyle why don't you still have your countryman?
Snow tires? What's that? 😉 Says the Carolina boy living in Charlotte... Who's lived in TX, MS, GA, SC and NC. Hehe. Have fun out there!!
No protection on your TM3 like mudflat and PPF? Let us know hour is your paint after a winter... you should get some!
Introducing our new product, Titanium lug nuts, 29% stronger and nearly 50% lighter than steel which results in a decreased rotational wheel mass. Used to set up your Tesla cars and make it more great. I know where can you get it at a great price. Our available colors are Gold and Burnt Blue. If you are interested you may reply on this comment:)
Ice, slush around melting temps and a few inches of snow please.
what many people dont know is how much better the nokian hakkas are, they are light years better than regular winter tires , i run studded hakkas in northern alberta canada and am amazed by the performance . M ost just get tires with a winter designations and think they have done it right, i was guilty of this then a friend let me try his hakkas, it was at least times 10 better than my blissaks , i know i sound like a fan boy but they are so much safer than the regular winters
It looks like most of your driving still will be on pavement. Did you consider one of the new breed of cross season tires? They are said to provide good grip on snow while maintaining decent performance in warmer weather on pavement
I did think about it and this car will be spending a lot of time up in the mountains this winter so I decided to just get the best snow tire I could find.
@@OutofSpecMotoring I think you made the right choice. I have the crossclimate suv on 2 of my cars and they’re much better than all season on light snow/plowed roads. But definitely not as good as my previous dedicated winter tire setup in deep snow / ice.
Great, another "ultimate" video.
Maybe a snow drag race with the guys from TFL?
Sure!
Hi, wow exciting news on the big move. I just ordered a Model 3 on Monday and live in Canada, so I am researching winter tire options now. I note that the stock Tesla winter tire size option is 235/45/18 and you have 225/50/18. I know that the narrower tires are best for deep snow, but those two options result in different overall diameter. How do you tell the car that and have it recalibrate the speedometer and other systems to compensate. Thanks, Phil
Kyle, could you clarify what tire size you got for this latest video? I have an order pending and need to know. You're the guru. :-)
@@scottbreseke716 at 7:41 he shows that he got 225/50/18, stock Tesla size is 235/45/18 on 8.5" wide rims.
@@PhilT993 Thanks. I guess I missed seeing that.
@@PhilT993 I thought he had 7.5" Martian rims, but maybe I missed that too. In the older video he had the 7.5" rims.
@@PhilT993 Oh, I see now. In this video he DOES say that he has the 7.5" wide rims. Ok.
Can you give the exact specs on the tires and wheels? Thanks
You said precondition the car at the time you leave? I didn't know that. How?
In the Charging menu, go into Depart At.
Is that the tire size Martian recommended or just one you found that fits those wheel?
Martian recommended this tire size for winter for this wheel
@@OutofSpecMotoring ok, I was thinking about doing a similar setup for a model Y. Martian told me that every model 3 wheel they make will fit on the Y. I just wondered about tire size recommendation because I forgot to ask them that
How are the jobs and housing prices in Colorado? I've been considering moving there or to Utah
Housing prices are very high there (and have been for about 6 years now). Rent is equally insane. I lived there from 2011-2015. Beautiful area though.
Yeah, dont
Winter tires are very important! I just got new ones for my Model Y. Have a look at them in my channel if you like. As for what tires I went with Nokian but have no clue how good or bad they will be.
It's too bad Tesla removed the 'depart at' charging feature you referred to in the new update :/
Track mode for the slides or just tipping it in the right way?
Track mode! ESP cuts any fun way too quickly
@@OutofSpecMotoring Thanks, I had a feeling that was the case. It might be good to mention that in future videos. :)
@@OutofSpecMotoring if you find a way to reduce ESP on a non-performance I would love yo know... I couldn't afford a P and this is my single biggest gripe with my AWD 3. I live in Quebec so get 4-5 months without proper fun...
One more thing to note is that if you are buying aftermarket wheels and TPMS sensors, the 2021 Model 3's now use different and unique Bluetooth TPMS. They may only be available from Tesla at this point in time.
That's really good to know! I had no idea they changed them for 2021
Philip, usually when one gets aftermarket wheels they move the original wheels TPMS sensors over to the new wheels rather than purchasing new TPMS sensors.
@@scottbreseke716 That can work, but those in cold climates that have winter tires on for half the year often have a second set of rims for those tires. It is expensive and hard on the rims, to keep switching tires back and forth on one set of rims each year. so, 2 sets of rims and TPMS. You might also like 18's for winter ad 19's or 20's for summer.
@@PhilT993 The 4 rims that Kyle bought go for $2,000 altogether ($499 apiece). I imagine he's trying to save some money to go towards his next Tesla. How much is Tesla charging for their new unique Bluetooth TPMS sensors?
@@scottbreseke716 I live in Canada, so it is hard to say in USD. I have heard here that they work out to about $500CDN for a set. Also those rims, for me are $655CDN each plus shipping. I think actually probably the best deal for me is to order from Tesla the set of 4 18" rims, mounted and balanced with TPMS and Winter tires for $2700CDN. Those Hakka's are $192CDN each here, so 4x Martian rims + 4 Hakka tires + 4 TPMS + mount and balance = $3988 CDN + 13% taxes. OUCH.
Congratulations on the move. Colorado is absolutely stunningly beautiful.
I would love to know why Tesla insists on putting enormous heavy inefficient wheels on their cars? Isn't the point to be efficient? I don't really see any advantage on the big wheels other than looks which is subjective and personally I think they look kind of ridiculous. They look decent they give a better ride you're not going to bust a rim on a pothole better Tire choices at more reasonable prices. I just don't get it. Looking forward to more content from Colorado
I think the bigger wheels have less sidewall flex when driving fast through high speed turns, like on a track. So more stable.
Jason over at Engineering Explained released a video this week on the Michelin‘s. For an area that you live in now that sometimes even gets snow in June I wonder if you should compare yours against his on your car to see which gets better cold and hot temperature traction and better wear.
Sounds like a good idea!
Sadly Martian no longer offers these wheels in 7.5 width. Not sure why. Maybe rim failures in the 7.5 width? Can you find out? Thanks
I asked Drew at Martian wheels. He said that 8.5 width was the most common requested, so he decided to just do that width going forward. I put Pirelli P Zero All Season Electric (electric is part of the description) tires, in the 235/45/18 size. They look very wicked and ride quality is very much better than the default 20".
Thanks to this video i put 235/50/18 tires on my 18” wheels and they Rub on the front upper control arms.
🥺🤦🏽♂️🤕. If anyone watches this video don’t get thicker than 45 on your 18” wheels.
Welcome to Russia and I will see your drive)))
Dump that nokian crap and get some blizzaks like a real Coloradan
I actually have blizzaks on another car and will be doing a little comparo. So far the Nokian’s seem much more aggressive in the snow!
Bla Bla Bla...
Tesla ugly catfish car lol.
