  • Coolant temperature indicator showing overheating engine. Replaced radiator, coolat pump, thermostat, radiator cap, adjusted the radiator fan clutch, but few weeks later the coolant temperature gauge needle was going up to the Hot side, then minutes after the engine start, this instrument was showing a warm engine, even the coolant was cold. The needle was not moving fast up and down, and that not suggesting a poor connection in the circuit.
    Then I found a post in a forum where a gentleman posted a picture of a resistor that is causing this problem on these instrument clusters. That came in very very handy as I didn't have to waste hours of tracing these circuits.
    The good thing is that I ignored a mechanic who tried to convince me that my engine had a blown gasket and needs rebuilt. There are not many who heard of this engine here in Canada, so finding a mechanic for this car is not easy and it is tempting to take the advice of the first mechanic who tells you that he knows these cars.

    I resoldered everything and now the speedometer does not work anymore. but, the temperature gauge and fuel gauge is fixed now!
    I could use a little help. thanks! :)

      I am glad that you fixed the temperature gauge issue. The speedometer circuit is behind the LCD if I remember correctly. I am not a mechanic, don't take my advice as correct. Clean the silver plated connectors before you install the whole assembly back into the dashboard. If you set it correctly, and push it in gently, it will pop into its place without much effort. I would check all the connectors around that large IC (the black square circuit that has lots of pins on it)

      Hi, my dad was close to buying a new instrument cluster assembly, but I gave it one last try and re-soldered it, 4th time, and now it miraculously works.
      Thanks for the quick reply!! :)

    There are few other videos on this channel that might be helpful when you want to work on the brakes or water pump or belts or radiator. Will publish other videos every time I do small repairs on this car. Will not make short videos to please some viewers. I do post details for those who have the patience to learn from my experiemce. The videos are for first time repair type of users. Just grab some tools and use some of my tips. Slow down and take the time to write some notes while watching these videos. The reward of well done job is greater than when you pay a mechanic to do it for you, unless you are not interested to get your hands dirty

    Do you happen to know the coolant temperature sensor part number?

    Did you ever resolve your intermittent overheating issues?

    • @CuriousSoulCanada
      @CuriousSoulCanada  5 років тому

      Yes, my truck engine is working fine. I have replaced almost every component of the cooling system, radiator, hoses, thermostat, water pump, radiator cap, installed new coolant (twice) after properly washing the engine block and removing the rust and air bubbles, repaired (not really needed) the blower fan clutch, then the last item was this coolant temperature gauge fix. Do not follow my advice, i am not a mechanic, i just know how these system work and I have experience in a somewhat more complex field

      @@CuriousSoulCanada I have a 00 Pajero NM DID 4M41 and i have had issues with overheating on long drives on hilly areas. Temp gauge seems correct as coolant was boiling hot, have ordered a 56mm high capacity radiator currently enroute from China. i speculate that it could have a bad or sporadic non op thermostat, Where did you source your thermostat from?

      @@RKay-ms2rd in the past I have installed a remote temperature sensor on the radiator to be able to read the correct temperature as I thought that my temp gauge is faulty. My truck was overheating while driving uphill, I had to stop and let it cool before continuing my journey. In most cases that is a clogged radiator issue. A regular size radiator should help, it works for me even when towing a 17ft boat and trailer uphill (it goes in the second or 1st gear). But I also had this temperature gauge trouble. I sourced some parts from www.autodoc.co.uk/, they have warehouses in Germany as well. Do a pressure temperature test on your thermostat, insert it in hot water while monitoring the water temperature and opening of the valve (beside the spring), I posted a video of how I did it

      Frans Dekker ....this is free information, I choose to take a video and I spent some time and data uploading this info to help few Pajero owners and save them few hundreds of euros in repairs. Being grateful makes someone become a better self. I live in Canada, a country where people are living their lives at a slower pace but beautifully, and I am not going to waste my time posting videos to please some viewers who live in the robots world, and want free information the way they want, because I don't need their likes or thumbs ups.
