    Remember to always hand them the call light and check if the bed breaks are in check before starting the procedure especially involving the Privacy which she was correct on out of all I enjoyed watching this( and remember to check if the bed is in a low safe position)

    This is covered in our introduction and instructional videos, as well as in my classroom teaching. These demonstration videos are designed to be used in conjunction with classroom training and will not feature all instruction. Checking for kinks is important (it does not matter WHEN you do this) because a kinked catheter will not allow urine to flow out of the body. However, failing to perform this point alone will not fail you. Her paperwork will list all points she failed to perform.

    This is supposed to be an INSTRUCTIONAL video, there is nothing wrong with her explaining the procedure with every step by step she is performing. I'm happy she is doing SO much talking, (as you say) it will help me remember the steps when I take my exam! Also, Ms. Patty is right in saying not knowing what a complete stranger is doing with your genitals is creepy. Talking to them relieves any anxiety.

    @Vannatyc1 Using the "leaves" or corner method ensures that you are cleaning the tubing with a clean area of the washcloth with each stroke. Using a mitt does not get the same results. Since the standard is to use a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke during testing, this method is much more acceptable. Thank you for your comment!

    The state exam does not grade on side rail usage because not all beds in healthcare have siderails (they are considered a restraint). Scooting the patient toward you on the bed before rolling them away from you keeps them in the middle of the bed after rolling, which promotes safety. This is an appropriate action in any setting and keeps the patient safe without the use of siderails. Good luck!

    Raising the bed is optional for the exam because many beds in many settings (long term care, home care, assisted living) may not raise up to comfortable working level so it is not graded. Side rails are also not graded because they are a restraint and you must have a doctor's order to use them. Good luck!

    @4yourcna  12 років тому

    Absolutely! All very good points. That would be a great method as well. However, for the exam, it is not required as cleaning the catheter itself first (which will clean around the meatus as well), then holding the catheter up as you clean the labia will provide adequate cleansing for the exam. This demonstration is just one way that could be accomplished; your way is another excellent example. Thank you for your insight and taking the time to post this great observation!

    The testing center may not have siderails on the beds because they are illegal in many settings. Siderails can be used as a restraint (a way of keeping a patient confined against their will) so you need to learn how to perform this skill safely without the use of siderails. Scooting the patient toward you and turning them away from you so they are lying in the center of the bed on their side is the proper way to position a patient in a bed without siderails. Good luck!

    @JackTheHopeful Thank you for your comment! Every teacher will have their own way of teaching cleaning processes and will present infection control principles just a little differently. The only items that NEED to go into the toilet are body substances. Cleaning water can be dumped into the sink. These are Florida state standards. Your instructor may have students dump everything into the toilet rather than having them reason out what can't go in the sink...lol. Thanks!

    Catheter care should be performed on ALL catheterized patients at least once per shift to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (a common occurrence and a potentially deadly consequence of catheters). This should be on the care plan of all patients with a catheter. If it's not being done, it should be! Thanks for the comment!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    Thank you for your wonderful comment! It is not a test requirement to elevate the bed to waist level. This is a comfort measure for you, but not tested on the exam. Failure to lower the bed at the end of the skill will cause the student to fail due to safety issues (the floor being further away than the patient anticipates). Since I don't have the ability to fully TEACH in this setting, I have opted to leave that step out since it does not affect the test. You may elevate the bed if you want.

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    Siderails may not be available for the exam and even if they are used, their use is not graded, which means that you have to provide care safely as if they were not in place. This is why it is important to scoot the patient toward you and roll them to the center of the bed. If you put your gloves on earlier, you will contaminate the gloves with everything you touch which will spread the contamination to the catheter and peri area. It is best to follow the example in the video to pass. Thanks.

    This is the method used in the video. Folding the washcloths in fourths and holding it in a diamond shape in your hand with the free leaves pointing upward gives you a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke. However, this skill requires FOUR washcloths, not two. One to wash the front, one to rinse the front, one to wash the buttocks, one to rinse the buttocks. Hope this helps! Good luck!

    No, because the washcloths are never put into the basin of water, which means the water is never contaminated, but remains clean. Therefore, this water can be dumped into the sink. Thank you for your question!

    For a real patient, yes, absolutely! However, this skill is demonstrated on a manikin for the CNA exam and it is extremely difficult to get the manikin into that position without pulling on the protective pad and risking skin tears. It is safer (when demonstrating on the manikin) to use the scoot and roll method. This demonstrates that you are aware of the safety aspects of pad removal when the patient is not physically able to lift their hips. Thanks for the question and good luck!

  • @JackTheHopeful
    @JackTheHopeful 12 років тому

    Very precise!
    Some things were different like the disenfect spray,and towels,also pouring water into sink instead of toilet but also im in florida so thats why its most likely different.

  • @4yourcna

    Cleaning the inside of the labia is important, but cleaning the labia majora (outer portion) and skin folds will help decrease microbial contamination and can help lower the risk of infection. Patients with catheters have a higher risk of urinary tract infections and it is vital that the catheter and surrounding areas be kept clean. Since catheter care is often the only "personal care" regarding the peri area that the patient receives, all of that area should be cleaned for comfort. Thanks.

  • @spintess

  • @4yourcna

    Yes, you should apply soap to all areas being washed, then rinse those areas with a clean, wet washcloth. This is a required step for the exam. If there is no disinfectant (and there should be in all testing centers), proceed without spraying the disinfectant. Good luck to you on your exam!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 років тому

    Two washcloths are not enough to clean both the tubing and the peri area and rinse both areas without cross-contaminating. The skill must be performed in such a way as to prevent cross-contamination because urinary tract infections are very common in catheterized patients and every effort must be made to prevent them. Good luck on your exam!

    That is a good strategy, but be careful what you are touching with those gloves once you have them on! The first thing your gloves should touch is the patient. Touching other things in the environment and then the patient will transfer the pathogens onto the patient. Handwashing before and after every skill (and understanding proper glove use) is a better way to ensure that infections don't spread in a facility. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

  • @4yourcna

    @mmc26justme Good luck in challenging the CNA boards and congratulations on attending LPN school. It is acceptable to use the method demonstrated in this video for the Florida state CNA exam as it clearly uses a different area of the washcloth for each stroke, which is the main standard that they are evaluating (along with wiping from front to back). All of our students use this method with great success. Eventually, it will catch on and the mitt will be a thing of the past!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    In Florida, you identify the patient verbally before washing your hands ("Hi, Mrs. Jones. I am Patti, your CNA"). Patients in many settings do not have ID bands and even if they do, they are often wrong. It is much more accurate to address the patient by name, giving them an opportunity to correct you if you are wrong. Checking the brakes is not graded on the exam, the bed is always locked during the test. You may check if you wish, but it is not graded. Hope this helps and good luck!

There are many ways to perform skills (no single right way), but our skills videos demonstrate all of the necessary procedures and infection control practices. These videos are prepared using Florida state standards and according to general nursing best practices. This procedure takes into account infection control principles, patient rights and safety concerns and will satisfy CNA testing requirements in most states. Instructors may demonstrate different techniques, but as long as these principles (infection control, safety and patient rights) are covered, it will meet the requirements. Good luck!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    You don't HAVE to speak like me...but it helps! :) It is important to let the patient know exactly what you are doing to decrease anxiety. Everything I say has a purpose behind it (education, patient rights, safety, etc). This is the BEST way to perform the skills. Think of what you would want if you were the one laying in the bed scared, alone, sick and somene was going to do something to you. Treat the patient like you would want to be treated. Good luck!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    CNAs provide much more personal care and spend more time with patients than any other healthcare provider. This means that they should never be impersonal. However, like anything else, this is a personal choice that each worker must make. I am an RN and have worked with excellent CNAs and nurses and some horrible ones. It is up to you, during each and every patient encounter, to decide which you want to be. If being a CNA is an unpleasant prospect, I would reconsider becoming an RN. Good luck.

    I live, not lived, in Texas and yes a side rail is considered a restraint. Just as 4youCNA explain below, the same rules apply here in Texas. Some skills is different for each state. In this skill, we don't have to clean the vagina, just the catheter and we pour the water from the basin into the toilet, not the sink.

  • @ag4coupons

    You can never go wrong with attending an accredited university or community college. I have heard in some places nursing homes may offer a CNA course if you sign a contract. But like I said accredited schools always a good route because certificates and degrees are accepted almost anywhere, besides you have to have so many experience hours and to pass a state exam to be certified.

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 років тому

    I am sorry you feel that way. Many other CNAs would probably agree with you, but many, many more would not. Your work environment and co-workers will have a lot to do with your opinion (and these vary from place to place). If you find that you are not able to perform you skills properly, please tell your supervisor or consider applying at other institutions. You should NEVER vary your skills from how you were taught or perform care poorly because it will put the patients at risk. Good luck!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 років тому

    You will use 4 wash cloths (1 to wash the peri area, 1 to rinse the peri area, 1 to wash the buttocks and 1 to rinse the buttocks). You will need to use a different area of the washcloth for each stroke (1 down the middle inside, 1 down the right outside, 1 down the left outside, 1 down the right skinfold, 1 down the left skinfold). You can do this by holding the washcloth in a diamond shape with the free corners pointed upward and use a different corner for each stroke. The video shows how.

    You can if you wish, this is not a graded point. But think about it for a minute...your gloves are soiled (you just cleaned the catheter and peri area) and you really don't want to handle the sheet (that will go right up next to the patient's face) with those soiled gloves. This is why we remove the gloves first, before removing the blanket (handling the "cleaner" underside of the blanket) and pulling up the sheet. This is not a graded point, but is a good general principle. Good luck!

    Siderails may not be available for the exam and even if they are used, their use is not graded, which means that you have to provide care safely as if they were not in place. This is why it is important to scoot the patient toward you and roll them to the center of the bed. Siderails are considered a restraint (they keep patients in bed who don't want to remain in bed) and a safety hazard (patients often climb over or under them to get out of bed) and you must have a doctors order to use them.

    You must wash your hands AFTER your opening (the privacy curtain and bed controls are dirty) but BEFORE you get your clean supplies (have to have clean hands to touch clean supplies). Your gloves go on AFTER all preparations have been made and immediately BEFORE touching the patient so that you do not contaminate the gloves. Remember, everything that you touch with your gloves will contaminate the gloves, then you pass that contamination on to the patient! :) Thanks for the question!

    Yes, these skills are demonstrated according to Prometric testing standards (the checklist can be found on Prometric's website). If you follow these guidelines for your skills exam, your performance will meet or exceed Florida requirements. Please pay special attention to infection control standards, patient rights and safety when performing each skill. Pay close attention to what items are clean and dirty and what your hands are touching. Good luck!

    Scooting the patient toward you before rolling them onto their side will ensure they remain in the center of the bed when on their side, eliminating the need for siderails. It is important to know how to perform this skill without siderails, as they will not be present in every setting. You may use them if they are there, but you will not be graded on their use (meaning you must ensure safety regardless of siderail usage). Good luck!

    The best place to start is to find out what the licensing requirements are in your state. Contact friends and family in the medical field and ask for recommendations for schools. Call your local nursing homes and hospitals and find out what schools they hire from. Enroll in a class and take your test! These videos will help you prepare for the exam. Some states allow "challenging" the exam, but all CNAs shoud have some formal training to gain skills not taught here! Good luck!

    CNA testing standards are uniform throughout Florida. These videos demonstrate all skills according to current Florida state standards. There are many acceptable variations, but I can only speak to our video demonstrations. It is up to you which method you use on the exam (the mitt is fine, as long as you can absolutely prove that you are using a different area of the washcloth for each stroke and it does not matter where the water is dumped, it only held clean washcloths!). Good luck!
