Raising the bed is optional. You may raise it for your comfort, if you prefer, but it is not mandatory. However, if you do raise the bed, don't forget to lower it at the end of the skill. Failing to lower the bed at the end of the skill is a safety concern which could fail you! Good luck!
No, but keep in mind that everything your gloves touches will contaminate the gloves before you use them to brush the patient's teeth. Think about it from the patient's point of view...would you want gloves in your mouth that have touched many potentially unclean surfaces? It is best to wash your hands, gather your supplies, prepare the supplies then apply your gloves and perform the skill. Hope this helps! Good luck!
It is not necessary to wash the lid of the denture cup during this skill. You can do so if you wish, but it is not a requirement. The denture cup itself that held the dirty dentures must be rinsed and filled with clean water before storing the clean dentures. The lid does not have active contact with the dirty dentures, therefore does not NEED to be cleaned (but you can go above and beyond!). Great observation and with that attention to detail, you will make a GREAT CNA! Thanks!

I am not specifically familiar with Michigan standards, but general nursing best practices indicate that clean supplies should be placed on a clean surface so that they are not contaminated prior to use. Since we do not KNOW for sure that the overbed table is clean, we can place a barrier there to ensure that we have a clean work surface and we are not contaminating the table with body fluids from the patient. So, yes, a barrier should be allowed in all testing sites. Good luck!
You are allowed to use the overbed table for the Florida CNA exam. You should place a barrier on the table first, to provide a clean area to place your clean supplies so that they don't become contaminated. The top of the bedside table is generally used for storage and will not be easily accessible. The overbed table is the best choice, as long as you use a barrier. Thanks for your great question!

For the exam, that is fine, but remember that everything you touch with your gloves will contaminate the gloves before you need to use them for patient care. You may be transferring germs onto the dentures in real life, which could make the patient ill. It is always best to perform your prep work with clean hands and put your gloves on immediately before touching the patient (or in this case - his dentures). Good luck!

Testing centers should have disinfectant spray. However, all you are required to do is rinse the basins, dry them and store them. Disinfecting is not required for the exam. Since many people use the basins during the test, they should be disinfected (by you or the testing evaluator) to protect against disease transmission. But in a clinical setting, the basin is only used by the patient so rinsing is sufficient. Good luck!
Does not matter. You may clean the dentures first or perform mouth care first, your choice. Just watch infection control principles if you decide to vary from this demonstration! Good luck!

You will use a toothette (a soft, spongy disposable toothbrush) to brush the patient's gums during denture care.
You may, if you wish, but it is not required. Mouth wash is not required at all for the exam and probably won't be in the testing center. Water can be offered before brushing or only during rinsing. Good luck!

For the Florida exam, it does not matter which you do first. Good luck!
I do not know how Georgia standards are worded (read the care plan they give you carefully as it will contain the instructions you need) but denture care SHOULD include mouth care (the mouth the dentures came out of will be dirty, with food particles and denture paste stuck to sensitive gums). If you are supposed to do mouth care as well, the care plan will indicate that. Wish I could be more help!
These videos are performed according to current Florida state standards but are also relevant for other states. New York standards are the same for this skill, so the steps would be performed just like the video shows. Good luck.

The basin is only used by that resident and no other. You may just rinse and dry it before storing it and this meets the standards. Or you may use disinfectant if it is available. But it is like your sink at home - most people just rinse their sink out after brushing their teeth - they don't disinfect it. We are trying to accomplish basic cleaning, not create a sterile environment. Good luck!

No, because the sink controls (faucets) are always considered dirty, so you may touch them freely with dirty hands or soiled gloves. That is fine, just don't contaminate your gloves by touching the sink faucet. Remember, the faucet is dirty and you do not want to further contaminate an item that will be going into a patient's mouth (dentures) with bacteria from the faucet. So, make sure you use a paper towel between your gloves and the faucet. I generally put my gloves on immediately before touching the patient (or denture in this case) to avoid contaminating my gloves accidentally. Good luck!

The Clinical Skills Checklist, point 3, states "Wear gloves when handling denture, providing mouth care, and rinsing equipment?" The dentures are in the cup, you are not handling them directly when carrying the cup to the sink, then immediately washing your hands. You will apply gloves before handling the dentures. This is proper procedure for this skill. Contaminating gloves and using those gloves on the patient is a bigger infection control infraction. Thank you for your question!

However, I thought that for denture care during the exam, you don't even need a patient for the skill, you just get the denture cup and perform the skill at the sink. I'm taking my test in Georgia though so maybe the exam requirements are different here than in Florida?
Im pleased for the most part with what has been shown but I see a lot of small mistakes and where in the world did they get the idea that disinfectant is ok to be sprayed on different supplies

There are no skills that require washing your hands three times. You must wash your hands before performing each skill (after the opening) and after the skill (at the very end), but no skill requires handwashing DURING the skill. This skill requires a glove change after cleaning the dentures, but you are not required to wash your hands between gloves. Good luck and hope this helps!

For the exam, the care plan will tell you to clean the patient's gums. If the patient has teeth, then you would also clean those. Follow the care plan. Good luck.

Toothpaste is not meant for dentures and scratches/damages them. Just brush them with denture cleaner creme (or mouthwash) and rinse.
I would like to know if you are removing gloves, why you are not washing your hands. As Nurse I was taught to wash hands before donning gloves, and when removing them. I teach my CNA students that also. So why are we not washing hands after removal??
+Jeanne M Thank you for your comment...and yes, hand hygiene is important! For this skill, the hands are washed during the opening (as with all skills) prior to the skill being performed. A set of gloves is put on to clean the dentures and this first set of gloves are removed after cleaning the dentures and storing them on the bedside table. A new set of gloves are then applied before beginning mouth care. Handwashing between these two events is not required, as it is the same patient for both components of the skill. Because it is not a required action for the skill for the exam, washing hands between glove changes is not demonstrated in the video. You are encouraged to teach hand hygiene practices, but this is not a required action for the exam. Since both components of the skill are on the same person, and the CNA is not leaving the room or caring for another individual during this period, washing hands at the beginning of the skill (prior to beginning) and at the end of the skill (prior to leaving the room) is considered sufficient to demonstrate proper infection control procedures. +catalina No, it is not necessary to wash your hands after removing the first pair of gloves that was used to clean the dentures before applying new gloves for mouth care, as long as it is the same patient.
+4yourCNA hey again :) Do I need to refill the denture cup with sterile water? In the testing room they have bottled water next to all the denture care supplies, I was instructed to use that as sterile water to re soak the denture in the denture cup after cleaning..... thank you!

Denture care or mouth care first?
I'm from Florida and we were told we couldn't use the over the bed table to do any of our skills. We had to use the bedside table or a chair. Is it really okay to use over the bed table? It seems like it should be fine with a barrier over it.
can we put our gloves on before taking the denture to the sink and putting toothpaste on the toothbrush
would u fail if u put the first pair of gloves on first while gathering the supplies and then just turn on the water with a clean paper towel

next time....pleeeeeeeeeaaaasee, show what u are doing more clearly by actually moving the camera and focusing on the important parts. i mean u are cleaning the patients mouth and i cant even see what u are cleaning. but apart from that, this was a wonderful video and i appreciate it so much

Rinse as often as the patient wishes. You are being too technical and not getting the point of the test. They are evaluating how you would perform this in a clinical setting. Instead of focusing on the test, focus on how you would want to be cared for if you were the patient. It doesn't matter how many times you rinse. Again, you are being way too technical. Relax, they are not that critical on these issues.
With the FL exam,she sidnt use a paper towel to turn the water on and off, she didnt apply gloves 3 sets in FL, first to bring everything to the sink, then take off, then reapply before putting the toothette., to the paitent, then also remove put clean gloves on before cleaning up dirty Lenin, also didnt ask the paitent where he wanted his dentures places after cleaning..bad video I would have failed this skill for FL depending on this video!!
I see a lot of mistakes...if you are going to test in Orlando do not reference this video. I'm pretty sure the were a few automatic fails here. very concerning
This is performed according to state standards and is accurate for all areas of Florida. As an RN, I am very familiar with best nursing practices - and as a further testing site, I am very familiar with testing standards. I would be happy to explain specific concerns you may have but I assure you this is accurate.
Ok ..sounds good. So do you not have to wear gloves before touching anything that would have bodily fluids on,in,or prior?
And what about a barrier to turn sink on? Even when I replied to someone else you said you didn't want to contaminate but if you don't use a barrier to cut sink in and don't wash your hands before puttin on your gloves are you not contaminating your gloves?
+Heaven Umberger You put your gloves on right before you begin brushing. This keeps your gloves clean for the patient (you wouldn't want gloves in your mouth that had touched many surfaces). You must wash your hands at the beginning after the opening so that you have clean hands to gather your supplies and you will wash your hands after the skill to remove any pathogens you may have come into contact with. This is the appropriate process for nursing procedures. Those gloves are there to protect both the patient and you but you also have the added protection of two handwashings.
