They heard the shots and saw a bunch of people standing around looking up. He said it was, by far, the weirdest day he had ever had. My grandparents were desperately trying to get in touch with him, but the phone lines were clogged up, so they drove from Galveston, all the way to Austin at a high rate of speed and finally found my dad in the parking lot of the dorm with a bunch of other students huddled around talking about the day's events. It was a day that shook America to the core. Nothing on this scope had happen before. This day in American history actually started on the evening of July 31, 1966. That evening Charles Whittman murdered his mom, then his wife, he then write a letter trying to explain his actions. He explained he murdered both ti keep them from being embarased from his action of the next day. I feel for the people he murdered and wounded. What he did was terrible. However i feel for him in the sense he need help and did not get it. He was a Eagle Scout, a former marine with Honorable discharge, well mannered, did not do Heroin or any drug, was studying at college. Now do not take it wrong, what he did was terrible and i am glad he was stopped by 2 police officers.

I believe Tom's father was a college professor in Ohio somewhere. The man carrying him was a vietnam veteran. Brave guy. You can see him struggle under Tom's weight but eventually limp off.
I just walked around the tower area last week and through the building. I think it’s sad that there isn’t a plaque, sign, or marker of any kind to commemorate the loss of life here; it’s as though it never happened. It was strange looking down the hallway to the elevator.

This happened two years before I was born. I remember several years ago, there was a documentary about this on TV. It was disturbing to watch. I can't begin to imagine the horror felt by everyone who was there on that campus that day. Such a horrific tragedy!
Especially since it happened in 1966 - people were just not aware of mass shooters back then. Doesn’t help that Whitman was a trained killer with the perfect place to shoot from .
One thing interesting was that Charkes Whitman stated in his will that they do an autopsy primarily around his brain because he said that the thougts of wanting to kill innocent people had something to do with an undiscovered conditionn and when they did, they found a rather sized tumor there. Leaves us to wonder if tumors and cancer have something to do with putting people in that mindset.
Oh BS, my guess is that he already knew about the tumor and just used it as an excuse to not look like a bad person, sociopaths are always trying to minimize their guilt in the things they do.
@@johngnipper8768 Whitman coulda seen a doctor prior to that, and besides, many mass shooters don't have tumors on their brains, so we might consider the possibility that his tumor was not what made him an evil bastard.
Oh, sound? Where are you? It's also hard to believe that today marks the 55th anniversary of this tragic event. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, and the surviving victims of this terrible tragedy.

I was 8 years old living in south Texas ( born and raised in Texas), when this happened. I remember it well and how it affected me and how my parents reacted in horror to it. The death and chaos one person could bring was unspeakable and horrendous! I’m almost 67 now and look at all the killing going on now. A day doesn’t pass where multiple people are killed. It’s so sad. May those who needlessly perished that day Rest In Peace.
Michael Hegyan they thought it was a tumor they found in his brain pressing into a part of his brain that controls fight or flight and certain emotions. Either way it's still tragedy..
@Michael Hegyan - The UT Tower Shooting of 1966 was a real event. The reason? They think it was because the shooter had a brain tumor. What happened in Las Vegas was nothing but a hoax, one of many in recent years. The reason for all of the recent hoaxes? Google "Hegelian dialectic". Why do so many people believe that it's real? Google "Dumbing Down of Public Education". Yeah, people say, "Don't believe everything that you see on the internet." Before the internet was invented, people used to say, "Don't believe everything that you see on TV." [Why do so many people forget that?] And before that, people used to say, "Don't believe everything that you read." BTW, several years ago, I made some comment of disbelief regarding something ridiculous that someone once said on either a TV commercial or a TV talk show. It's been so long ago that I can't even remember what it was. My niece, who was in the room & happens to be the stereotypical "dumb blonde", replied, [EXACT QUOTE word-for-word], "They wouldn't let them say it on TV if it wasn't true." I was so shocked by her stupidity that I forgot to ask who "they" supposedly were. I assume that she meant the government.
@Archetype00 - First of all, I would like to say that from this moment forward, that I will cease my use of any & all profanity. So, I won't be a hypocrite when I make this statement: Your excessive use of profanity & VULGARITY is noted. Second, when you made the statement that you had a friend there, at this OBVIOUS HOAX, that proves that you are a LIAR. If you really did have a friend there, then that means your friend would be an insider participating in this hoax, and you are STILL a LIAR (& your friend, too.) Which means that you are a government shill. Third, you lied again when you said there was no difference. "..you could fake both entirely." is a strawman argument. You could fake both, but the UT Tower shooting wasn't faked. If somebody had tried to fake UT, a lot of people, including myself, could easily tell. And the political climate back then was VERY DIFFERENT. Responsible parties faking a shooting back then would have been tried & convicted. If the fakers had been trying to eradicate the U.S. Bill of Rights, (like the modern-day fakers of Vegas & other hoaxes), they most likely would have been tried, convicted, and given the death-penalty for TREASON! You are probably not familiar with the U.S. Bill of Rights (and probably don't even care) since you are not from the U.S., I can tell. Fourth, There are a LOT of SIGNIFICANT differences. Black& White film vs. Color film is not a significant difference & doesn't really matter - I've already explained in a previous post that color film was rare & very expensive at the time. Should I list ALL the differences - each & every one? Anybody, if they take the time, can study films from UT & Vegas & easily spot differences. ALL the films that I have seen of UT have been steady & in focus. I've already mentioned the many blurry, out-of-focus shaky videos used in several hoaxes. There are also LOTS of other differences as well. People need to check them out for themselves. I can EXPLAIN it to you, but I can't UNDERSTAND it for you. Here's a good quote: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. You can lead a man to knowledge, but YOU CAN'T MAKE HIM THINK!" I could post ALL the evidence proving Vegas was a hoax, but it would do no good for any of the brainwashed people that can't think for themselves. Last but not least: Your last strawman attack was also noted: "...you could be the next mass shooter." It is much more probable that I could be the next POTUS. And since you aren't from the U.S., I will make you do a search of the term "POTUS" if you really want to know the meaning. Just because I can already tell that you are a LYING piece of garbage! [I almost used profanity there, but I keep my word. My word is good and in sharp contrast to LIARS like you.]

@@Voucher765 back then you could take your guns to school. They had gun safety courses and hunting safety courses back then. Wasn't a big thing to see guns in gun racks in vehicles parked in the school parking lots.
I read that when Whitman entered the building the elevator was not working. A woman working there turned it on for him. I can not imagine living with that hanging over you
It could happen today but more awareness and more swat teams. Plus society then was a bit more tame in some aspects. Less crime compared to today Whitman was mentally ill but nothing was done about him so he kept being a violent natured person and then the time bomb exploded that 1st day of August 1966. There are time bombs out there.
After all these years, and horrific mass shootings, it's haunting to go back and revisit the story of Charles Whitman. In retrospect, the most disturbing thing about it is you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. These rampages have become almost a daily event in the United States, and reflecting on this event one ponders what is it about American life that is so fucked up that individuals feel there is nothing left for them to do but kill vast amounts of people at random. Personally, I can never understand it. Life is not that hard if you know how to live it. The key is to keep living.
The lack of sound or music makes this even more eerie than it would be with it I can't even imagine what it was like to actually be there that day. Another comment said it but I'll repeat it - whoever was filming had massive BALLS

I often wonder from a psychological perspective if this Wittman character was somehow influenced by Oswald even if it was subliminal and he wasn't aware of it? There are a few parallels here - shooting from height , marine , bolt action rifle , Texas
Maybe the general atmosphere of the 60s influenced him. Cold War fears the fight for Civil Rights the idea that society was changing fast. Those things possibly drove him towards the idea that its an era where you must leave your mark on society. And to be fair he is probably one of the most influential lower class americans of the 60s.His actions 'inspired' many others. The bolt action part though that seems more like availability. Circa 1965 bolt action rifles were still the norm among average folk. Heck even today they're common.Usually it takes 25-35 years for the transition from one set of weapons to another to occur. Semiautomatic rifles became Army standard in the late 30s. I think it was more of an availability thing.
Julie Furaitor how did you never hear about this? It's one of the biggest mass shootings we've had. Have you heard about Columbine? My dad was 10 when the shooting happened. Least to say I wasn't alive to hear about it.
It’s crazy that people ran out to carry the injured away while the shooting was still happening. Also right afterwards when hundreds of people were crowding all over the mall… now a days that would never happen
He was shot twice between the eyes and then a third time in the chest. The last was from just a few inches away. Such a powerful blast it lifted his torso off the floor. That was Martinez.
They're not "fak[ing] being dead," you can tell they've suffered an injury by the way they're running across the street. They're lying as if they were lifeless so as to not be shot a second time by the sniper.
@ReturnoftheBrotha sadly, although that is a general statement, and untrue, it's not untrue that many violent and horrible crimes are committed by the army and Marines on the same soil they swore to defend. It's the way they're made. One of their cadences is literally "kill, kill, kill". The cult that the Marine corps actually is is what predisposes them to horrific and violent tendencies. The way the government treats them afterwards, just straight up tossing them out with very little transitional training or employable skills, just ends up adding fuel to a dark fire that the government ignited in them.
@@Cannedscourge yeah, America would be soo much better off if we had no military, or if they were taught to engage in a war by "talking it out." Great thinking, snowflake.
If my memory serves me right , I think that the "TEXAS TOWER MASSACRE" of August 1 , 1966 inspired many large populated cities to develop SWAT TEAMS !! SWAT stands for "SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS" .
Some audio would've been nice to explain how the footage went from scatterings of people under attack or helping victims to hundreds of people all crowded together like some kind of political rally. Who were all those people? They certainly didn't look as if they had anything to do with the university.
It seems like there are two shots one on top of the other at 0:46 how can that be if there was one shooter? Or are those smoke flashes from the shooters weapon or are they points of impact from the police below?

My dad had just started summer classes at UT and happened to be eating at some place on the drag with his roommate when the shooting started. I was born in Austin and still live on the outskirts (West side) and every time I drive into town I can see the tower looming in the background and it gives me the f*cking creeps!!
Out of curiosity..how old are you?
Also the fact your dad was there when it happened and thankfully wasn't many of those who died or wounded is a blessing

Only two years after JFK.
Everyone was shocked.
We all knew America was beginning to change

@@bottlerocket3218 So how would anyone know that ? The autopsy found it.
@@johngnipper8768 Whitman coulda seen a doctor prior to that, and besides, many mass shooters don't have tumors on their brains, so we might consider the possibility that his tumor was not what made him an evil bastard.

It's also hard to believe that today marks the 55th anniversary of this tragic event. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, and the surviving victims of this terrible tragedy.
Joshua Brooks its probably filmed with a 16mm camera that doesn’t have sound recording capability.
If I had to guess its probably a Bolex 16mm without audio attachments. Typical newsreel standard. For sound to be recorded, that is a completely different production.
Really clear film quality.
Very tragic, no reason, as the same, for Las Vegas.
Yeah, people say, "Don't believe everything that you see on the internet." Before the internet was invented, people used to say, "Don't believe everything that you see on TV." [Why do so many people forget that?] And before that, people used to say, "Don't believe everything that you read."
BTW, several years ago, I made some comment of disbelief regarding something ridiculous that someone once said on either a TV commercial or a TV talk show.
+Archetype00 / Yeah, and my dog's cat was at the concert and took two to the chest so you couldn't possibly be full of shit. I'd like to see actual proof of a real victim 1st before we start talking about 50+ dead and 500+ injured. Just ONE! (and, yes, I've seen that ludicrous, hokey Liveleaks video with conspicuously-absent entry/exit wounds and phony-looking transparent, bright red "blood").
There was a reason. There's always a reason.
I was a year old when this happened . I was born at the old Bergstrom AFB in Austin. My dad was down on The Drag getting his haircut when bullets starting coming through the windows. Dad was a WW2 vet and said that it gave him a real quick flash back as he was hitting the floor.

There’s a whole podcast on it by The Drag called Darkness
After all these years, and horrific mass shootings, it's haunting to go back and revisit the story of Charles Whitman. In retrospect, the most disturbing thing about it is you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. These rampages have become almost a daily event in the United States, and reflecting on this event one ponders what is it about American life that is so fucked up that individuals feel there is nothing left for them to do but kill vast amounts of people at random. Personally, I can never understand it. Life is not that hard if you know how to live it. The key is to keep living.

I was 12 years of age.😢
