Modern MMA has advanced a fair bit as well. Wrestling is a cardio intensive endeavour. Most MMA fighters have trained takedown defense, and MMA striking has grown in sophistication. Much easier to sprawl, and then pick apart the wrestler. And even if you do take them down, it's not easy to keep them down and you have to watch out for submissions
Way to represent 08081, Champ! Lots of love for South Jersey/Sicklerville. Proud to say I graduated and wrestled at the same high school as this cat. You're a class act.
I wrestled for years and now I've trained BJJ/MMA for a long time as well. In all honesty, he's right. Most of the injuries sustained in wrestling are either in practice or self-inflicted, like from trying to turn out of something stupid. MMA has people actively trying to hurt you. Wayyy more injuries there
Been a hardcore JRE fan since the low 300s, but ever since the move to Spotify I have only watched one full episode(Bill Burr). The JRE is kind of just fading away from my life in a weird way.
Ben Askren was widely known as one of the best ever wrestling specialists to compete in MMA and Jordan absolutely SMASHED him in a wrestling bout. Would have loved to see him compete in MMA after the 2012 Olympics and see where his career could have gone.
This dude is a legend. I don’t know shit about wrestling but for some reason I’ve known about him. He’s next level! I’ve always wanted to see him compete in MMA!
Look at Jordan vs Ben. Ben flatfooted as ever, while Jordan's rear heel was almost always up ready to spring forward. He was playing a distance game that Ben has completely neglected
I appreciate Jordan for talking about how often rules change. I haven’t wrestled in years and any time I watch something on tv or UA-cam I feel like I have no idea what the rules are and what scores and what doesn’t.
I don't know if Jordan likes Pro Wrestling or not, but if he takes to the sport he could be the 2nd coming of Kurt Angle. He is well spoken, young, and just has a level of prestige that is incomparable. He could be a huge hit in that world.
Well he's a skilled wrestlers and all, but idk about that. The reason Kurt Angle shined wasn't bc he was an Olympian it's because he was able to play a really good character and worked well in the attitude/ruthless aggression era. Now if you mean in ring I think Burroughs could very well be exactly like angle and catch on fast.
I did some boxing but have found myself watching these guys because they are great personalities and great athletes. And the matches are quick to watch which is great.
He's being very modest though, even if he could barely throw hands with a guy that big he'd just need to work on technique, his wrestling would be that elite that he'd be top 5 easy
He will need to learn jiujitsu to compete in that. Because wrestling is about winning points, its okay to lose position in wrestling but mma and SUG are different.
I feel you man, same here... but it wasn't too late to start MMA. It's an awesome experience finding out what kind of fighter you are even if you don't compete and just love to spar. For me, MMA boxer using take down defense to stand the fight back up and use kicks to setup my boxing.
Ben Askren, Gregor Gillespie, Yoel Romero (has taken a lot of damage despite not being KOd), Mark Coleman, Chris Weidman etc... Not saying you’re wrong by any means mate. What you’re saying definitely has a base. But many top class wrestlers have lacked the skills/desire to stay out of a firefight or absorb damage. MMA is such a Spectrum
@Louis Fontenot ever heard of a fluke? 9 out of 10 times ben beats masvidal. Masvidal is good but he's the most overrated fighter in the ufc. He ain't beating anyone in the top 5
Also the money is not the same wrestling isnt that good in wealth like prize fighting and hes just not bout it he not mentally strong and feels he will get hurt when i get into the ring i never go into it thinking ima het hurt cant blame him he knows he cant bang with them dogs in mma
Great and interesting interview Joe.Why would one of the greatest wrestlers of all time want to get his noggin' scrambled when his wife,he,and kids may not want that? Huge money would be the answer of many but after seeing what toll it's taken on so many great boxers and knowing MMA is an even more devastating sport 'my particular freedom' answer would probably conclude with "teach that lethal stuff to men who stand defending our lives but I think I'll remain as healthy and mentally sound as I'm capable being for those that love me".That's not cowardice to me it's prudence but then everyone in our nation is supposed to be able to decide for themselves how their freedom is spent.
Nahh, with his fame and wrestling pedigree (considered one of the GOATs, better than Askren, Cormier, etc) he would make a fuckton of money in the UFC. And he's such a great athlete, I see him making a similar style that Khabib has; where his wrestling is so fucking good, that nobody could stop the takedown. If he spent 75% of his time training BJJ, 30% striking, and then the other 5% pure wrestling just to stay sharp... the dude would be world class in a few years. But, he is 32 years old now. So if he'd been doing MMA for 8 years (like he said if he got into it when he graduated college in 2012), he would be in the prime of his career right now. And in my opinion he would no doubt be a world champ. But early 30s is the end of your physical prime. So his career wouldn't have much longevity. Honestly tho, he should get into MMA, win 4 or 5 pro fights in some random org (he would beat the shit out of those lowest level pros, even with barely any training), then get into the UFC. Then have a few HUGE fights. He wrestles in 74Kg, which is 164lbs so he would compete at 155. There would be some amazing matchups with other high level wrestlers, and his name is so big you could have him headlining payper views. The UFC would give him a fucking big contract because of how famous he is. So he'd make probably 6 figures per fight, then have a few PPV where he gets points, make a cool few million dollars in 4 to 5 years, then retire. He wouldn't get too much brain damage and make insane money. BUT, as a fighter myself, I'll never be mad at someone who wants to avoid getting hit in the head. It just breaks my heart as a wrestling and MMA fan we'll never see him in the octagon lol.
@@mrmeatyboy true, the way I think his woman sees it is that if he gets head kicked in his first fight and develops health issues and can't even wrestle anymore then the green will be lost.

He doesn't need the UFC. He really is making money earning medals overseas, winning exhibitions in the US, and sponsorships.
He's one of the few American athletes that the general public in the US has no idea who he is, but is famous overseas.
Also the money is not the same wrestling isnt that good in wealth like prize fighting and hes just not bout it he not mentally strong and feels he will get hurt when i get into the ring i never go into it thinking ima het hurt cant blame him he knows he cant bang with them dogs in mma
Thanks a lot wife chick... 😑
@@edwincuevas4823 lmao he would murder you bro chill
@@nelsonedwards6184 lmao nah bro wrestling is different than fighting he can do all his bs wanna grab my legs but he not just gonna reach for my legs and think its gonna be a match this a real fight he never been hit hard and been in situations like that ill never let him establish his distance and establish mine and throw leg kicks and knees is he try to grab me i also wrestle so if he manages to get me he better watch elbows and other shit he not like them dogs in mma and he knows that its cool he makes hes nice lil money in wrestling and walks cool
I only knew a little bit about Jordan Burroughs before this podcast. He’s a super cool guy and was a great interview. Best JRE for a while this one 👍🏾
"I'm like 'eh , I'm good" LMFAOOOOO
Nah joe, I saw corn hole on ESPN in 2018 and was like *”So that game we played at church during halloween is a sport 🤔”*
Man, as much as I wish he’d have done MMA, as a former wrestler I have massive respect for his decision to have not.
Way to represent 08081, Champ! Lots of love for South Jersey/Sicklerville. Proud to say I graduated and wrestled at the same high school as this cat. You're a class act.
08108 here
Awesome to see a nod to Nate Carr. He trained me in high school and was such a down to earth and friendly guy
i’ve been waiting for this podcast for years joe. thank you
Remmeber meeting him in High school at the Wresltling camp in Lincoln. Good guy, Great wrestler!
I always imagined Burroughs to be a stuck up guy by the way he man handled Askren. He seems like a cool as person now!
He was competing...
some of the nicest people i know are wrestlers, don’t let them fool you by their intimidating appearance
I sont know what a stuck up guy means but somehow its self explaining and i agree.
He seems kinda "nerdish"
So him dominating Ben Askren made you think he was stuck up? Nice logic there
Burroughs is the man!
He's done great in wrestling, why change it up and put himself under more stress and danger. Love what he's done!
I agree. Also MMA fighters are underpaid. Unless you’re a standout elite MMA star.
I wrestled for years and now I've trained BJJ/MMA for a long time as well. In all honesty, he's right. Most of the injuries sustained in wrestling are either in practice or self-inflicted, like from trying to turn out of something stupid. MMA has people actively trying to hurt you. Wayyy more injuries there
Muay Thai and boxing more dangerous
@@billcipher3946 yes in terms of damage but watch rodtang vs mighty mouse and you will see that mma absolutely destroys muay thai
If he developed striking and a little bit of bjj and puts it all together man this guy would be champion quickly
Been a hardcore JRE fan since the low 300s, but ever since the move to Spotify I have only watched one full episode(Bill Burr).
The JRE is kind of just fading away from my life in a weird way.
Same. I listen to patrice on O and A instead now though lol. Those never get old
Ben Askren was widely known as one of the best ever wrestling specialists to compete in MMA and Jordan absolutely SMASHED him in a wrestling bout. Would have loved to see him compete in MMA after the 2012 Olympics and see where his career could have gone.
well he wrestled askren for a charity event and askren was out of his prime for about ten years
Any Olympic gold medalist could’ve done that to Askren if they were in the same weight class.
@@cmf20000 No he wasn’t lol. Askren was still wrestling considering he was in the UFC and wrestling was pretty much all he did there.
I gotta say, I'm not mad at his reasoning here. I like that he's being honest on why. Good stuff.
Seems like a chill nice humble guy while simultaneously bein the real fuckin deal
This dude is a legend. I don’t know shit about wrestling but for some reason I’ve known about him. He’s next level! I’ve always wanted to see him compete in MMA!
I have a Premium account and they always run an ad in the middle of your podcast. Thought you said the episodes were gonna be ad free?
Butcher box
Look at Jordan vs Ben. Ben flatfooted as ever, while Jordan's rear heel was almost always up ready to spring forward. He was playing a distance game that Ben has completely neglected
You sure the Corn hole championship wasn't on ESPN 8 "the ocho!"
@Johnny Pitbull and a different 8
What an interesting guy to whom to listen. Eloquent, on topic, thank you.
I appreciate Jordan for talking about how often rules change. I haven’t wrestled in years and any time I watch something on tv or UA-cam I feel like I have no idea what the rules are and what scores and what doesn’t.
Thanks joe for bringinging him into the spotlight. Good for the sport!!!
I miss JRE on youtube.
You're not missing much now... Same old comedian's, over and over.
I don't know if Jordan likes Pro Wrestling or not, but if he takes to the sport he could be the 2nd coming of Kurt Angle.
He is well spoken, young, and just has a level of prestige that is incomparable. He could be a huge hit in that world.
He's a 5x 5x 5x 5x 5x world champ
Well he's a skilled wrestlers and all, but idk about that. The reason Kurt Angle shined wasn't bc he was an Olympian it's because he was able to play a really good character and worked well in the attitude/ruthless aggression era. Now if you mean in ring I think Burroughs could very well be exactly like angle and catch on fast.
Built for wrestling not for war is ok but don't let anyone talk you out of your dreams especially not some girl that might leave at anytime.
I did some boxing but have found myself watching these guys because they are great personalities and great athletes. And the matches are quick to watch which is great.
Wrestling is the best sport ever! I just hope more people would realize that.
That and judo
I know man
Sorry man I tried watching it. I found it boring :(. I will try again one day.
@@wanttobeengineer it's more of a you gotta have experience thing
Jiu jitsu is 10x better
He's being very modest though, even if he could barely throw hands with a guy that big he'd just need to work on technique, his wrestling would be that elite that he'd be top 5 easy
No Spotify in Fiji Joe. We in the middle of the Pacific Ocean - give us some episodes on UA-cam please.
Maybe Jordan could do a submission underground then ?
He will need to learn jiujitsu to compete in that. Because wrestling is about winning points, its okay to lose position in wrestling but mma and SUG are different.

The one regret that I have in life at 35 is that I didn't wrestle in high school...
Still think about rolling around with High School boys in leotards do you?
@@KeyserSoze23 the funny thing is that you are the one bringing sexual innuendo into the scenario, what does that mean about you!?
I feel you man, same here... but it wasn't too late to start MMA. It's an awesome experience finding out what kind of fighter you are even if you don't compete and just love to spar. For me, MMA boxer using take down defense to stand the fight back up and use kicks to setup my boxing.
Burroughs is an incredibly well spoken gent . Wish him success . Glad he didn’t go mma honestly
He’s 32 it’s too late now
Wonderboy did transition around same age
Yoel did it late aswell
Unfortunately but I bet he could do PFL or Bellator...
Couture started at 33.
Cormier?
Jordan from Nebraska would actually do great in the UFC. His 9 dominant years in wrestling is unbelievable
Shoutout to this man from Nebraska 🙏🙏
Wrestlers take the least amount of damage in fights though. Look at colby, usman, khabib, and gsp.
@@TheLawrencew090 yea I'm just saying wrestlers can dedicate where the fight goes. If i had Jordan's wrestling credentials I'd do mma.
@Louis Fontenot ever heard of a fluke? 9 out of 10 times ben beats masvidal. Masvidal is good but he's the most overrated fighter in the ufc. He ain't beating anyone in the top 5

@@lukebennett576 true. Joe barely does MMA shows anymore it sucks. This was the first good podcast in a while
After seeing how coherent and articulate he is I'm glad he didn't go into MMA and get CTE
Facts and once u break something it will never be the same how many millions are worth living in discomfort
Just became a Jordan Burroughs fan, what a solid dude.
Love how the thumbnail is him wrestling Ben Askren.
He did wrestle Askren in 2019. Jordan crushed Ben 9-0. Search it.
His lady be like “I ain’t loosin the green” sit! Stay! Lol. Fair enough though.
None of it matters if you dont like being punched in the face.. ala brock lesnar
I never really gave it much thought before but to see the worlds best on professional wrestling teams, running team duel meets would be amazing. That’s just me though.
