    The stainless 3913 and its matte black stablemate, the 3914, are DA/SA.
    If yours does not go into single action mode after the first double action shot is fired, the internals have been changed to the 3953, which was Smith's DAO model with no decocker levers.
    You can switch it back to DA/SA, and lighten the DA trigger from police 12 lbs to between 8 and 9 lb civilian mode ( or fed cop mode, as the 3914 was originally made for the plainclothes US Marshals.

I also love my 3913 and it's quite clear why you carried it off duty instead of the 4006. 😸 12 projectiles of "GTFO" to throw at the perp and the 13th projectile is the actual gun itself. I love my ex-CHP 4006TSW. Amazing trigger, very handsome looks, and the weight makes it enjoyable to shoot. Unfortunately, that weight and the low mag capacity make it one of the mid to low tier choices for carry and self defense I'd pick out of my collection. :( An 11+1 .40S&W boat anchor with a proprietary rail? Oof. It's old. The ex-Columbus PD M&P40 that sits next to it in the safe certainly makes it clear why the 3rd Gen Smiths, Beretta 92s, and 1911s passed the torch onto the polymer frame striker guns.

    I believe what you have there is the 3953, the 3913 is DA/SA.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 3 роки тому +7

      0:36 Note the model number. The 3953 has no safety and a different design of the rear of the slide.
      You are correct, the 3913 IS, normally, a DA/SA. They also made 3914 and 3913 DAO pistols, on special order, prior to the 3953 and 3954 models, but they had no safety. My primary carry gun is a 3914 DAO. It is marked accordingly.
      My guess is that this pistol has been modified.

    • @Scaliad
      @Scaliad 3 роки тому

      @@garyK.45ACP Yeah, your's is the better explanation. I own a number of 3rd gens including a 3913, and a 2nd gen 669, but I've never owned a DAO. By the numbers, there should be no 3913 DAO, but S&W does all kinds of custom work. Third digit 4 is standard size DAO, 5 is compact DAO, 8 is mid-size DAO.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 3 роки тому +2

      @@Scaliad And you are correct about the model numbers and the DAO feature. However, S&W made several limited runs of DAO 3913 and 3914 pistols on order from law enforcement agencies. Mine is from the NYPD order. They were issued to NYPD detectives.
      Many police agencies preferred DAO for issued handguns. Eventually, S&W just made the 3953 and 3954 to meet that demand.
      FYI, SIG also made DAO models of the P226 and P228.
      It is not too difficult to find them if you look around.

    Thank you for showing it, it is a nice looking pistol. The action is either modified or there is a component broken internally. The fact that the hammer stays in single action when loaded suggests your disconnector is faulty.
    The disconnector on a third Gen pushes the trigger bar down and out of engagement with the single action sear when the pistol cycles, but if it were faulty, the sear would stay depressed and miss the hammer on follow up shots.

    My S&W 3913 is double acton on the first pull and single action thereafter. It's hammerless and semi-auto after the first pull.

      Mine is also DA/SA. My guess is that this is from a police department special order. When departments were switching from revolvers to automatics, many departments requested a DAO style trigger because they didn't trust all of their cops to be able to handle SA.

      My 3913 is also DA/SA with only the first round being DA and every following round being SA. I like that best. The DA trigger pull is pretty heavy. I'd probably dislike the gun if every shot was DAO. The SA trigger pull is fantastic!

    A little strange on the DA-only part... I have several Gen 2/Gen 3 autos and none of them do this -- the closest I have to this particular model is a 1076 (bobbed hammer but with the frame decocker ala Sig rather than the slide-mounted one). First shot is naturally DA, but then the hammer stays cocked after each cycle. Yours would have to be decocking itself as the slide returns to battery, which doesn't sound right. This *should* work just like your 645, as far as I know.

    My 3913 which looked exactly like that one, except the grip and magazine, was double action. They had DA only models. The 5906 is a full size 15 shot version of that gun. I was issued it by my Sheriff's dept in 95.

    I had 2 S&W 645's. I hated both of them. They were reliable and went bang every time. The problem was the sights were so poorly set up that they shot horrendously low. It was 6" low at 3 yards and as distance increased kept going lower. By the time I went to 60' it hit the bottom edge of a standard size silhouette target on the bottom edge with a hold at the top of the head on the target. Bench or 2 hand standing didn't matter, neither did DA or SA. I traded them off as soon as I could. Never had that issue with Glocks, 1911, Rugers (Mk2 and LCP) or even my old Walther PPKS. Only the 645.

    There's a dude on the Smith and Wesson forum that converted it to .357 sig by reaming out the existing barrel's chamber, he said ammo capacity dropped to 7. That would make a nice CCW since these aren't much bigger than J-frames

    My primary concealed carry handgun is a S&W 3914 DAO. It is marked "Model 3914 DAO" The blued version of your gun without a safety, it is DAO on every trigger pull, the hammer follows the slide down on every shot. The DAO versions of the 3913 and 3914 were made in limited runs for law enforcement agencies.
    I MUCH prefer a DA/SA or DAO hammer fired pistol for carry.
    The pistol you have should be DA/SA. DAO models have no "hammer drop" safety or safety of any type, other than the heavy DA trigger pull.
    My guess is that your 3913 has been modified after market to be DAO. This is a simple modification. The safety is redundant and is just a possible source of trouble on a DAO if you "get caught with your dingle down" as Jeff Cooper would say.
    If your gun has been modified as such, I would suggest removing the safety also and installing one of the "fillers" from a DAO model.

    These really need to be brought back under the S&W Classic line. Oh man! The guy custom converted it to DAO, not the "semi-cocked DAO" that was on the 3953. This was something that Massad Ayoob had done with a 645/4506 so he could have it on safe and all flinch-proof trigger mode.

    Your 3913 has either been modified or is malfunctioning. When you racked the slide, the hammer stayed back. But after you decocked and started shooting, it was DAO. NOT how the 3913 is supposed to operate. First shot after decocking should be DA. Hammer should stay back after that, making every other shot SA. I would take it to a competent gunsmith and have it checked.

    Hesitation can be expensive. Years ago, I’ve always overlooked S&W automatics that predated the polymer frame M&P series. They command a slight premium on the used market now …but so does anything with a second-cool factor, in my experience.

    The H&K P30sk V1 is the modern version of that, but seems to have disappeared from the US market. Strikers are great for the range, but DAO makes much more sense for civilian EDC. Hopefully H&K will update with a staggered magazine model equipped with a red dot , that would be perfect.

  • @kbm-zw5jd

    It’s been pointed out, but that gun is not operating as designed. It should be in single action mode with hammer back every time that slide is cycled with the safety off. Doesn’t matter if it cycles after being fired or when the slide is manually racked. It’s also odd that the gun is in such nice condition, but the mags are the older style 7 round mags with the metal followers.

    Is there something wrong with the sear on that 3913? I saw the hammer stay back and saw you drop the hammer with the safety. But then it appeared to fire double action every shot. Am I seeing that? I have three 3913s and they all fire single-action after the first double-action shot (IF I drop the hammer first, of course.) So what I'm getting at is, is that an altered mechanism in that gun?

    Then they went to Glock 40s in the late 90s but he liked that 9 mm .
    Another friend had a full size forty Smith and traded plus some cash for a Shorty Forty Smith. I out shot him with that that was in about 94. I liked the pop the forty had.
