  • This video will show you how to enable SSH on a headless Raspberry Pi (Raspberry Pi with no Monitor, keyboard, or mouse) with a Windows computer. This will also work on a Linux or Mac computer.
I am using the Raspberry Pi 3B+: amzn.to/2Tnsc0l and recommend using a 2.5A minimum power supply, such as: amzn.to/2G0wcku I usually use whatever SD cards I can get cheaply, but recommend minimum 8GB and class 10, here's an example of a good cheap option: amzn.to/2MHJkvb If you need recommendations for good compatible Pi hardware just leave a comment below.
If you need to install Raspbian on your SD card first, check out this video: • How to Install Raspbia...
To start, just pop the SD card from the Raspberry Pi into your computer. Once it is in, it should pop up with the boot directory, otherwise click it on the left of your file browser.
Here you will need to add a blank file called ssh. Just right click in the folder window, go to new, and choose text document. Then just delete the full name, and name it ssh. You need to make sure to delete the .txt portion as well. If this does not show up, go to view, then Options, change folder and search options, go to the view tab, and uncheck hide extensions for known file types.
After you create the file, put the SD card back in your Raspberry Pi, and boot it up. You can now connect over SSH. If you are on Windows, I recommend using Putty for SSH, which you can download here: ninite.com/
The default hostname for the Pi is raspberrypi.local, so feel free to use that unless you have multiple Pi's on the same network, otherwise you will have to get fancy to find the IP address, or you will need to change the Pi's hostname when directly connected.
The default username and password for the connection is pi and raspberry. I would highly recommend changing the default password for security.

What to try next when this doesn't work. I have added a file called ssh to the boot directory but when raspbian boots, there are no services enabled, not even ssh. I believe it's because the initial setup hasn't been completed yet for the final install.

This doesn't work on NOOBS 3.2.1. Any alternative to get it enabled for my new headless Pi4?

Have you tried with just the disk images? I downloaded the disk images for raspberry pi light and one for pi 3 and pi 4

You have to add a drive letter to it if Windows does not do this for you.

Some times I can access the card in win10 but every time windows updates I seem to lose the function. In between those periods I install a load of crap recommended on numerous web pages. Linux reader being a case in point. Imagine the fun of being able to see the directory you want to put the files into but you can't write to it.
I've just plugged in into two other win10 machines and both want to format it. Maybe two weeks ago the function worked immediately after writing the sd card and re-inserting it. Yesterday morning, a new project to start, format a card, write Buster to it, take it out and re-insert and it wanted to format. Formatted again, re-wrote image, tried accessing it immediately with no success.
It would be nice if we could add SSH and WPA files to the image before writing. I can attach it to cat5 and see it on the network.
If adding it as a drive is the permanent fix I'll let you know.
The myriad of web pages that show it happening like its normal behaviour ignore the fact it's not a given for many.

On right clicking the partition in drive management the only option is HELP.
