- In this video, we show you DIY folks How To Repair a Broken Attic Access Panel Door Frame. this happens when your trap door/attic door sits on the attic framing that surrounds the attic access door. Over time the attic access panel pushes down on the attic access trim, which is often poorly built by the builder with typically 2 smooth brad nails on each attic access frame member. Making matters worse for this attic access panel trim failure, they did not caulk the attic access door trim frame to the ceiling, so there is really nothing to hold the attic access door in place, and it separates from the ceiling. As part of DIY repair the attic frame around your attic trap door, we use PL Adhesive to secure it in place and shoot many more brad nails at an angle to make it hard for the attic access frame to separate from the ceiling. Once the PL adhesive dries, this will be rock solid like cement and will not budge. Then we use silicone around the perimeter of the attic access panel trim to caulk it to the ceiling. Now you have a virtually indestructible attic door frame.

At lease you could use a new piece of of Trim instead using the old one . Make it look pro and neat and clean
Thank you, Jeff. Great video. This helped me out.
Glad to hear it Thomas!
Thank you for sharing this fix
Happy to help
Thank you so much for this video! I am on my own and with your help I saved $800.
Glad I could help!
good work
Thanks for watching James!
I was going to be the dingbat using a screw without pilot holes. Thank you for video and links to supplies and tools!
Glad to help JM! Drilling pilot holes is always recommended in wood.
Oh my gosh, your comments are so funny, "I don't know, were they drunk when they did this?"
Yes I always encounter the worst of the worst of construction down here in South Florida every time I go to touch something it was always done improperly by the original builder
Good thx
No problem
Thanks for the video. 2 frames have come down. They had applied PL Adhesive before and it is difficult to remove old adhesive. Can I apply new adhesive over existing adhesive
Depending on how thick that old adhesive it is if you try to put a new frame on top of that it could make it stick out too far from the ceiling so you may have to do whatever you can to get it scraped off slice under it with a utility knife and then pry it off
@@jeffostroff Thanks
Why don't you replace that ugly old trim with new trim if you doing all this work?
They were broke and had no money, also this is standard trim for all attics her ein fl. Once painted it will look really nice
Could i do the same process with hammer n nails ? .. or should i use screws n drill ?
If you use ribbed nails you might get away with it, you want fasteners that can't pull back out. But also you might try regular nails IF you caulk all the way around the wood frame. Then it will never come loose. My preference is to use screws.
Yep, same here, no nail gun and not worth the expense. Are the nails used in the video a specialty nail for securing wood to drywall?
Would the adhesives cause issues down the road if you wanted to change the trim?
You could easily pry it off.
That cord for the door opener is pulled awfully tight.
I was wondering a couple things:
(1) Why you didn't use new trim and make it look more professional (Customer didn't want to pay for it maybe?)
(2) Why you didn't take down the furring strips and remount them flush with the ceiling sheetrock?
How would you remove all that molding in December after using that much PL adhesive ?
It's hard, but you can use a drywall hand saw
What does this mean? Why would you have to remove in December ?
Also, when you put the adhesive on the trim, did any of that overlap where the cover would touch?
@@bradfordneumann7358 At the 20:00 minute mark he says this was just a temporary fix and he would come back in December and re-do it all the right way. Well good luck ripping all that glue out.
How did it come out in December after the Re-do ?
Why didnt you just adjust the frame the 1/4" prior to reinstall? For a temporary fix you used alot of permanent pl adhesive.
Your logic is not making since. You can't adjust the frame, 1/4", the pieces were cut at a fixed length by the builder, so you are stuck with the size unless you want to go buy more wood and measure and cut. This was not temporary, it was a permanent fix, that's why I used so much PL adhesive.
All that effort and reused the shitty trim? Seems new trim would have been a better choice
They didn't have the money for new trim. The guy you hear din the background was the owner. He actually died a few weeks later too.
@@jeffostroff Sorry he passed. For the little trim would cost .. it would be my work on display so it gets new trim even if on me.
is that Horseshack doing home repairs? damn :)
But I sound like Charlie Sheen
"Yeah."
I muted the video because of the constant comments in the background.
22 minutes really!
I suppose we could incorporate a lot of fast forward into it, but yet there's a lot of things to show people how to get this right, because every attic does I have ever seen does this. Apparently builders in Florida don't really know how to build.
If you cut out all the ranting and whining this is only a 5 minuet video!
The guy talking in the background is annoying!
Owner of the house, unfortunately he is now deceased, he actually passed about a month after we shot this video.
