In April 2024, more than 700 people gathered to watch two sides battle over the No. 1 issue in the 2024 election: Should the United States close its borders?
Best-selling author Ann Coulter and Sohrab Ahmari, founder and editor of Compact, argued yes. They faced off against Nick Gillespie, editor-at-large for Reason magazine, and Cenk Uygur, founder of The Young Turks.

The American birthrate has dropped below replacement level. Migrants are allowed in because there's a need for replacement workers as well as tax payers to keep your country functioning at a maintenance level. At the same time the birthrate is dropping, baby boomers are reaching retirement age with 11,000 hitting 65 every day. That is people moving out of the workforce. It's the same thing that is happening in Canada.

Immigration (legal or otherwise) into the US is not a right. Immigration into the US is a privilege to those who meet the requirements. Assimilation and self-sustainability are expected and should be demanded.
The legal path to come ot the US is broken. Many cases of brilliant physicists and mathematicians who come to study in America's top universities, and then can't stay once they graduate. So many decent, valuable people in various areas, whose immigration papers take 5-15 years to clear.
Many on the Right say "just come here legally" and that's perfectly reasonable, but fix the damn system first, for your own good.

And we don’t need any new bills or laws, we just need the executive branch to enforce the laws already on the books. Watch and see how fast Trump closes the border in January 2025. Divorces and car accidents can increase GDP. The economy can be measured many ways, and it is a means to an end, not an end itself. Closing the border to immigrants would not significantly harm the economy in terms of GDP, but it would help the native-born Americans in economic terms as well as social capital.

There are some studies that suggest possible downward pressure on wages for the absolute lowest earners and least educated. But all of that is irrelevant to immigration. They have less room for more immigrants but tighter-knit societies that are even more easily disrupted by too many third-world entrants, especially when they come from societies that hate the West and our values but want to take us over nonetheless. There is a carrying capacity, we could handle a slow, steady trickle of immigrants, but this bumrush is quite obviously not sustainable. It's not out of empathy, Democrats are virtue signaling sycophants executing their plan to use these to-be abused workers as a voting block, to create a single party state. Single party Democrat policy domination has failed inner cities for decades. The inner city black folks are the ones whose wages will be subverted. And then Democrats will pander to them once again before the election, and once again, the vast majority of them will remain on the Democrat plantation. Biden's admin is a historic failure on most fronts, and when Trump takes office in January, you'll know exactly why. America-loving Americans, the ones who used to control society, are taking back the reigns of government.
This kind of content is sorely needed these days. I follow a lot of controversial issues via MSM, Substack, Podcasts and “X” and this is the first real debate (as opposed to yelling, screaming and ad hominem attacks) that I have found in a long time. I would love it if this could continue as a regular series. Topics such as trans participation in sports, police shootings, homelessness, racism etc. are just some of the issues that would benefit from this kind of format. Keep up the great work.

So a 10 year halt on immigration makes sense, time enough to deport or assimilate the many millions of immigrants already here. Once we have solved our immigration issue, built more housing, improved the economic situation of our lower and middle classes. Once we have helped those already here. Then we can start bringing in highly skilled immigrants into the country.

Immigration is fine but we should probably figure out how to straighten our our own country and take care of our own people before we open up the immigration. Look at our cities. Why don’t we make a nice place for people to live in before we invite more people in?
The winner was actually the “No,don’t close the border side.” All movement in the numbers was toward them. That is how you judge a debate. You gave the “Yes” side credit for what they came in with.

There is nothing wrong with our immigration system. Trump nationalized legally over 700,000 people in 2018, Amd nationalized 830,000 legally in 2019. The most in the previous 11 years. We felt nothing bc they were already here working, learning, and crime free. There are still millions like them. These are the people that deserve at the front of the line. America offers opportunity not freebies.

I never participated in debate club as a student but recall that the participants were required to back up their claims with citations. It would be nice if TFP could attach a link to the references that these 4 people used in their statements. Without this how are we to judge their veracity.
