- In this video I have a look at a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban that came in with the SES light on with a code for the EVAP system. P0446 was the code stored in it. This one was a pretty easy fix -Enjoy!

Kind of an old vid from this winter folks that I kept in the archive for a couple reasons.
-First was the video quality on it sucked. Sorry bout that, I often get distracted working and forget to check on the camera.
-Second I wanted to make sure the customer had no issues and indeed the vehicle worked prefect, ran a full drive cycle and it has been several months with zero problems.
-THIRD and most important I wanted to get another Chevrolet in with this exact EVAP system on it with the very small purge line to the tank and canister so I could see the decay rate on it. Indeed these do bleed down very, very slow compared to the later model GM's with the larger line from the tank to the canister. Any how, more of a self reassurance thing I suppose. At any rate-Enjoy!

As the owner of an 02 avalanche with the small line, they bleed down very slowly, and these tanks suck to take out! I changed my fuel pump, wasnt fun.

Best story ever. Was working on my moms old ford something years ago. Doing a simple plug change and knocked the broom handle off and the hood fell flat down on my head. She came over and lifted the hood, while laughing 😂

As a certified proctologist I really appreciate your diagnostic methodology on the vent and purge valve.
I almost spit my coffee out while Eric was telling the story of almost hanging himself with the driveshaft. "Mommy heard her baby screaming." Too funny. Your troubleshooting is great, especially on the electrical issues. So is your humor and storytelling. The mental images I get during your stories are excellent. The image of you shimmying down between the muffler and driveshaft on a bucket, then hanging there by your head was very vivid. Sometime can you draw out the evap system on your whiteboard? Keep up the excellent videos!

Thanks for the video, I picked up an 01 suburban last year for the wife and kids to truck around in , Rust free from AZ. We live in Iowa not rust free area not as bad as your area but still plenty o salt on the roads in winter so now we shall see how long the old beast shall last, also it's a 32 gallon tank on those beasts.

In a perfect world I'd find a way to scoop up South Main Auto, your house - barn - tractors, Mrs. O and the kiddos and transport you to some small town in North Texas. Rarely any snow! No salt! No rust! No state income taxes! You'd be able to actually work on vehicles back into the 1990s... And I'd be able to bring some of my fleet to South Main Auto - South when I really need you. Congra-rats on over 500k subs, and thanks for educating and entertaining us for years.
Well sir, another great video. It showed me that I'm not the only one with a 2003 Suburban (Z71) with a P0446 code, and that I have just changed my mind about digging into checking it out myself. I had a mechanic replace "A sensor" last year just before all the COVIDD crap started, and 4 weeks later the Check Engine Light was back. Then the shop closed due to COVID. Great, no warranty work on that one.
Then I heard a couple a months ago, that if the mechanic uses a cheaper non-OEM sensor, it's probably the cheaper Chinese version that dies within 2 to 4 weeks...BINGO ! But the shop is usually closed due to COVIDD now. Well crap, thus the desire to just do it myself. But I have no car lift, and am NOT a mechanic, although I have plenty of tools to do it. So, off to the local Chevy Dealership to pay $1,000 I don't have, on top of the $300 I payed the mechanic last year. It is always something.

Trying to figure out if my Solus Legend has the capability to function the evap system. (I’m sure it does)
Noted on the diagnoses, it had cleared the drive cycle and failure was later after the IM completion according to freeze frame data.

I've had a few GMT800s, current is an 04 Suburban Z71 5.3 Flex. Had it for about a month or so, was waiting for the infamous evap codes, finally got one in the p0446. Of course I don't have a "big fancy scan tool", but I have smarts and I can backprobe and test. I don't have an extended crank, truck runs just fine. I was never a parts cannon guy, but I would replace whatever the code said...been doing mechanic work for over 14 years. But since I found your channel over a year ago, I test and take my time before I spend money on parts. However I know how failure prone the fuel pumps are in these trucks. And I have no idea what brand fuel pump is in my truck. But thanks to Mr O, I have wonderful videos like this that lead me in the direction I need to go! I have learned SO much from watching your videos and have become way more confident and comfortable with testing and diagnosing these days.

Ford had a similar system on the 03 - 04 light duty (F150 - F350) trucks except for the sensor location. The 97 and 98 GM minivans were very similar also. Good fix Mr. O.
I thought that the laws of car repair said that whenever you need to lower the gas tank they have to be full.
I think that's only when you have to remove them.
Fuel pumps only fail when the tank is full. That's why I never fill mine more than half way. I figure my fuel pump should last forever.

Had to replace the fuel pump in my 02 Yukon. I removed the rear driver side seat, drilled a hole and found the pump location with a borescope. I made a fiberglass panel before cutting a hole in the floorboard with an air chisel. Replaced the pump, painted the cut area and the fiberglass panel with a marine coating. Installed riv-nuts and bolted the panel down.
Any future work on the pump or accessories should be super easy. 🙂

I chased that code on my 04 silverado loading the parts cannon with the tank pressure sensor the canister vent solenoid no change ended up taking the charcoal canister off the truck and blew dust out of it for about 5-10 mins and so far that has fixed the issue
I started with the Vapor Canister Purge Valve on a 2000 sub drove 80 miles CEL then the canister vent solenoid drove another 60 miles CEL again finally bit the bullet pulled the 2nd row seat cut an access panel for fuel pump and replaced the fuel pressure sensor. Good luck

Fuel tank related stuff always makes me pleased that BMW was smart a couple of times in their design. From what I've worked on, E30s and E36s you just pop the back seat cushion up to have access to the fuel pump and junk. E34s you access it from the trunk.

I'm from southeast Texas & have an 04 Tahoe with practically no rust on it. I was recently working in Iowa & I lost count of how many people looked my Tahoe & said I can tell you're not from here because of how clean & rust free it is. Thought it was pretty funny.

Possibly the vent valve filter half stopped up with dust and dirt. I had. To replace the vent valve. On. My 2003 Silverado 2x in less than 80,000 miles. Another great video from Eric O. Thank you
