Buick LeSabre: Catalytic Converter Remove & Replace (Universal Fit)

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- We made the call after properly diagnosing this LeSabre, ( • Buick LeSabre: Custome... ) now it is time to get the car fixed and out the door. The OEM C.A.R.B. Convertor was way more than this car was worth so we installed an aftermarket C.A.R.B. cat to keep the EPA and the customer happy. Let's see how it turns out. -Enjoy!

If I could bring my vehicles to you, I wouldnt fix them myself. I think thats the best complement I can give.
That's a great compliment, but then you miss out on the fun of working on your car.
@@matthewriggenbach8000 This job didn't look too fun to me...
@@sirreginaldthe4th lol!
Your welding skills are far exceeded by your diagnostic skills and class A communication skill. Your videos are fulfilling and well executed, only complaint, more Mrs O.😁
I wish all mechanics loved their customers the way you do! I get the feeling you want the best outcome for all your customers
Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm 👍
These are my thoughts !!!
I love your "doing things right for the customer" via cost considerations and ingenuity; it really speaks to your high integrity. Cheers!
well said.
Eric appears to be a good ol boy, fixing things for people while not dragging them over the hot coals. He's got my vote
Welding gloves, your hands will thank you when your 60 years old , and not all scared up from the burn marks on your skin.
Agreed!
@@robinrousseau1087 +
As a certified master welder, I see nothing wrong with your welds, actually they're quite good! You didn't do anything different from what we all do from time to time, ie. striking off a little extra run-out on the edge of our work....yeah we're supposed to cut the wire with our nippers, which are usually just out of reach. Proud of you, brother!
Well that job was exhausting....
Oh the pun... the PUN! :)
I know, he must have been fuming.
Pipe down will ya!
Oh Good Grief! ;-)
Absolutely fantastic mechanic one that knows how to properly diagnose a vehicle without just throwing Parts on and charging a customer for items they do not need unlike other shops I am impressed well done Bravo we need more people like you
Good welding! I was surprised at how good the weld looked and I'm not kiding a bit! Great job!!!
You know you're in excellent hands when the mechanic puts never seize on the catalytic converter studs and uses a removal clamp on the rear for ease of accessibility later. I hate aftermarket parts but in this case it was the most viable option considering the high cost of OEM. I couldn't get this kinda of service from anyone in my area. No way no how. If I could buy equity stock in SMA, I'd spend every last dime I could liquidate to get in on the ground floor. Eric O's business is takin off fast! Great video.
trying to make it easier on himself next round when the cheapo "crapalytic turdverter" fails in a year or so :))
Not actually. Eric's always been busy and he's not any more or less busy than he ever was. Living in a rural area, well to me where Eric lives isn't a rural area it's actually the Outback, he will never truly profit due to either his obvious skill or honesty. His labor rate is $70 an hour which is unheard of here in Phoenix and about half of what any dealership here would charge. Eric in Phoenix would be fast on his way to becoming a millionaire as people would happily pay for his competence and honesty. In Avoca, not so much. Think about it. In damn near every video some car that somebody screwed up (either the owner or a lousy shop) comes to Eric to bale them out. WHY? If I had a guy like Eric around and something happened to my car I wouldn't even consider taking it to somebody else yet his own neighbors seem to do it all the time. Christ had it right: "NO MAN IS A PROFIT IN HIS OWN LAND."
SATAMAN Schmidt well said
SATAMAN Schmidt what are u talking about? Do you watch his live streams? Do you listen to him speak to the people? He is often telling the tale of how he is getting busier and busier. Sometimes(before Josh and Hannah came back) he would be booked out almost a month. How do I know? Because I want to bring my car to him to work on since incompetence seems to reign king everywhere. Also, with his popularity growing on UA-cam, sponsors are now starting to take an active look at him as a viable creator. Remember the $10,000+ turn down from Exxon-Mobil so he wouldn't be perceived as a sellout like ETCG? I do because I pay attention and care. Astro, to name another, is constantly bring out new more innovative updates to their products because of Eric O. Companies don't do that if he is just "average" or mediocre. The writing in on the wall in front of you if you just STOP and take time to see it. Phoenix or NYC, isn't going to make him anymore viable. His appeal is in being the HONEST hometown mechanic that does stellar work at a fair price. Give it a couple more years and then we'll really see how this channel is flying high. And I'll be one of the few that got in at the bottom level(3 plus years ago) and laughing all the way to the bank!
You might say that I have inside information. Three years ago Eric invited me up to Avoca and I stayed at his home for a week. The reason for the invite was to discuss his purchasing methods because at that time Advance Auto was charging him more for parts than people coming in off the street were paying. I convinced him to start buying his parts from Rock Auto and Amazon and to get an Amazon Prime membership. The reason that I made this recommendation, and the only way this could work, was that Eric was booked out two to three weeks in advance back then. He had more than enough of time to look a car over, determine what parts it needed and then order the parts from either Rock or Amazon an half the cost of what Advance Auto was charging him. I set him up with Microsoft Office and we even set up a comparison spreadsheet showing what the part would cost from Advance vs. Rock or Amazon. This finally got Advance to give him decent pricing as they were losing $5K a month to Rock and Amazon from SMA one of their bigger customers in the metropolis known as Avoca, NY. This is how he got all of the Rock Auto magnetic stickers you see on his cabinet.
With respect to Astro I set that up. I'm friends with the owner of Astro Pneumatic, Steve Fisher, and his product manager Chris Pettit. I told them about this guy in New York who had what I considered to be a vastly superior UA-cam automotive channel named Eric and that Chris should contact him to use as a tester for any of their new tools since, as I distinctly remember telling Chris: "this guy could break an anvil." I personally either gave, or sold to him at my cost, all of the TOPTUL tools Eric uses in case you've ever wondered where they came from.
My comment was exclusively about $$$$$. If Eric would live in a major city, or for that matter if he was willing to fly, he could triple his income. I've been trying to get him out to SEMA for four years where I guarantee you multiple companies would be willing to shell out serious cash to have Eric in their booths. There is no doubt that being in Avoca is holding Eric back in this regard. Avoca is a charming little town, but, it's not where the action is. Don't believe me? Ask Keith DeFazio, the man who knows more about diagnosing cars than any other breathing human being that I know of.
I worked out of a shop that was not licensed for five years. What kept us going was we charged the customer what the part cost us and we never charged over $40 an hour to repair. We were never out of work and we never had any complaints against us, and we fixed any screw-ups on our dime. The man who ran the place had to retire due to health reasons and we all went our separate ways, but to this day I still help my friends and neighbors by telling them what is wrong and how to fix it themselves. Kudos to you sir!
@grozbeek mose the shop always made money, everyone was always payed on time and we always got bonuses every year. We always had cars waiting and we always made sure that they were satisfied. Plus you would not believe how just the word of mouth kept us busy. As far as making money it was never about getting rich, it was about helping people who couldn't pay a dealer to fix their vehicles.
I understand,,but it hard to pay 15 thousand for a scan tool at 40$ hour
Wasn't a boring video at all. Just learning how not to install a computer is worth it for someone.. Helps to avoid such carnage.
Wow, you sir are what millions of us want in a mechanic. Compelling UA-cam content indeed. It's very easy to be entertaining when you've got a pretty shiny shop, unending supplies of high end components and a never ending stream of exotica, but you made me into another another subscription. Honesty, integrity and competence . I could watch you all day.
besides the skillful repairs, the pride you take in doing a good job and the excellent film making, I like the stories behind the jobs as well. this is one of my favorite channels.
Love your thorough attitude in all aspects of car repair. These days your kind are very scarce. It’s still a wonder that people still trust mechanics to work on their cars. It’s people like you that uplifts a regained confidence in the automotive industry. Thank u for sharing a complete repair on this customers car.
"Your car needs an ECU." Must be the first phrase you learn at Hack University / Parts Cannon Community College... Nice work, Eric! Love this channel!
I just bought a 93 ranger and the listing said "needs computer". Told my wife, my son, my buddies it's never a problem with the computer. Got to the seller's place, popped the hood and sure enough. Need a computer. It was missing.
@@mrtrizzae I had an 87 Ranger that really did need a computer. Turned out, the windshield had a minor leak, and where did it leak onto? The computer and had it all corroded. I put sooooo much money into that Ranger. (I bought it used). I traded it in on my Hyundai Elantra wagon in 1999, and am still driving that. In fact, I just replaced the ENTIRE exhaust on it, including the cat and O2 sensors. 200,000+ miles, and still runs like a bear. Now, to get it away from the SALTY NORTH.
Parts cannon community college might be my favorite line ever

The JOY of a helper like Hannah ! Anticipates your next 2 moves, and has everything ready, off camera.
You ask, "I need a 14mm silver socket with a short extension, a pair of Kiwi pliers, and a new roll of wire in the welder."
Next thing you know they are in your hands, no questions asked !!!!!!!
Sure does not work that way around here.
@Dansyoutube Give me a call, I'll double your profit margin.
Hannah is also a well trained nurse. She has a capacity beyond that of any normal woman.
Still catching up on some of the older videos . Great job and the only thing I would like to have heard was the engine revving in neutral after the converter change since the bogging was part of the reason for your diagnosis. Hearing the difference might have made it more clear why your experience told you what it was. Too bad someone with less knowledge caused the purchase of unneeded parts, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way of whom you can trust.
Thanks for your work and especially taking the time to make these videos!
Im really impressed how you fix other shops incorrect diagnostics. Im a DIYer and I love watching your videos for entertainment and useful information. My wife hates it that I watch your videos. She always says “again?!” 😬
Keep up the good work. I want to see you feed Sheba that honey waffle bread from Europe. Hilarious.

Time flies. I was working at a GM dealer back in the day and I remember when we got our first all new 2000 lesabre. I thought it was ok, but I really liked the 99 and down lesabre better
I'm waiting for Part IV, Cutting the Cat open to see the plug. What'da say Mr O?
atschirner yes!
Love those old Buicks with the 3.8ltr. Just great cars. The ride is like driving while sitting in your easy chair in my mind.
just wanted to see you floored it one time to test the cat : }
Cheers to you, you know everything to anything, most mechanics around my area dont do welding.
Your welding is pretty good, it's almost like you have some practice at it. Either that or Hannah was a master welder this whole time and finally took pity on you...
That engine was like o thank God I can breathe again
Nice to see an honest mechanic-you sir are a gem.
I totally agree.
You sir are correct
he's a rare breed, that's for certain.
hey man- you are very talented! I have watched a few of your videos on this and the corvette fuel injector issues on the white C4. From one renaissance man to another- carry on!
That Vette video was one of the first SMA videos I watched as well a couple weeks ago.
Very first one was the oil change on the H, then found he had a second channel, score!!
A rare honest mechanic, great to see you work dude!
I do love to see this in real time, thanks so much for making these videos
Very happy I found you.
This wasn't boring at all, man.
This video was so good that I watched it again two months later. As I said before, amazing. It is amazing that you basically diagnosed the "real" problem as soon as you replaced the fuzes in the first video.
By the way, you look like a pretty good welder to me, and I bet others have said the same thing. Good job.
Good lord Eric, when you held the Autel in front of the camera while driving down the road I thought we were going to wreck. I really needed you to move it so I could see where I was going.
I thought I was the only one who thought "Geez, Eric, I know it's safety third, but this can't be good. Oh, wait...I get it now." I was a little sleepy, maybe.
LOL Glad I'm not the only one. That was a pucker moment.
Giving back seat drivers panic attacks since 1979
I know this was over a year ago but as for the recip saw blades, I had found some by Starrett called fire and rescue. They work great on exhausts and angle iron .
this has become my favorite channel I learn more on this than anything out there thank you Eric for all you time
Just by cutting off the clamp studs shows that SMA has a professional who cares!
Nothing you do is boring to me! Thanks for the video.
Great job Eric! Always professional and always looking out for the customers pocketbook. You are a rare breed my friend. Thanks for the videos! Especially the Chrysler minivans! Wife has one and you have helped me greatly! Thank you!
Loverly job, your welding looks pro to me, looks spot on eric. :-D
You have great fabricating skill, no one can moan about that.
Totally agree.
Oh, I’m moaning all about it 😉
Weld is first rate, nice job
Needs to use gloves. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!! or at least the melonomas in your skin.
Seriously tho, you're right, you're not working on the Freedom Tower, nice smooth bead.
Amazing attention to detail.
Thank you for the video. Always wanted to see how an aftermarket/ non bolt on cat was installed.
It's all about helping customers out. awesome vid. Thanks for sharing.
watching you pull out those pin holders from the ECU was agonizing, hahah i like your videos very helpful
that car just went up in value when you installed the ford exhaust studs!! those welds sure look good to me. the old buick almost got some free body work...."custom by crunch"
ha ha from a old ford man
Like a Pinto. BOOM!
LMAO. Went up in value for the next guy that has to fix it. I haven't seen a 5.4 3-valve that hasn't needed new manifolds because the cheap OEM parts constantly crack.
I'm so glad I don't work on northern cars
Next episode - SMA's Dashcam Near Misses and Crashes! ;-) Great job Eric, hope you got yourself a new customer!
I was really impressed with your work here. Great job!
You forgot to show us the plugged cat insides!!!!
I was hoping to see that as well, what plugged that old cat so badly?
Yea come on Eric, show us the inside
not much to see, other than jet black carbon shmoo built up on the honeycomb face and quite possibly down inside. very possible it's just small carbon chunks stuck on the face only. sometimes a good hammering will knock some loose enough to get it across town/home a ways...
Jimmy S -Yikes! ....As Eric would say :"What in thunder!!!"...I still would've liked to have seen the guts of this one to guage the degree of clog to the symptoms. Plus in a way we all "had a hand" in this repair.
I may or may not have pulled the plug/s and blew the plugged catalyst out of the old pellet type before :)))
I am a welder, you done good. Nice of you to go the extra distance to save the customer money. Not many others would
Dang, I missed the clip where you expand the pipe, I've never seen that done. You've got good welding skills for a guy who does it part time, I knew the welds would be fine based on the frying bacon sound of a properly adjusted machine. When I was a kid I'd weld without gloves all the time. Only later did I learn how the UV rays can cause skin cancer. This is a job that would be nasty to do on jack stands. Great video, there aren't many of these on UA-cam.
spelunkerd I see you in every good repair video there is no matter what it is about!!
Now I know how you learned all of those skills LOL!!
Wire fed welders are about as automatic as they come, and I've seen people fail with them for lack of preheating the job, wrong wire speed, amperage too high, low...
Last time I welded with bare arms I ended up with serious sunburn!
Meh. I don't mind the arc burn, and am not afraid of cancer. Plus, wearing welding gear on a hot hot summer day is torture!

Doh!
You're the best I've seen. You have passion for your work, and compassion for your customers. Keep up the good work.
SMA GIVES OUT FREE HUGS!!!! WooHoo! Eric you are going to have a line at your door tomorrow!!!
"Don't even think about it, woman. You'll look like the Tin Man." I cried from the laughter.

Why take the chance?
Let's see you brag AFTER your arm is burned off!
Great job on your video brother. I love your explanation of everything and your thorough follow through from beginning to end once again great job.
Great video Eric that car cutting you off was a close one but it would be her fault you have the right away people need to pay more attention than that would have been a heck of a video be how to fix a Cadillac converter on a Buick LeSabre and then how to watch an idiot get hit for pulling out in front of me on video be careful great video of the work
I really like the detail you go into with your videos. The Buick LeSabre video would usually take about 10 minutes . Salutes the cousin Vinny
Oh what do you know ! He's got Hannah helping
Never the less YOU get the job done your work is better than mine any day YOU MAKE GOOD CENTS... YOU HAVE INTEGRITY....
Glad to see the buick back on the road good old car, 3.8 probably still has lots of life left in it! Awesome job by the way.
I enjoy ur videos...keep-em comin. your old school and I can relate to that....and your honest and to the point.....
OMG, your the first automotive channel I've seen that actually uses a cutting torch correctly!
It is a natural extension of my arm haha
try a foundry torch, much better control
You know, many yrs. ago my Dad was a mechanic in his own "service station". I grew up in that station & learned a lot about cars. I've owned 2 stations and had mechanics work for me. None of them, except maybe my Dad, had the dedication to they're craft that I see in your LeSabre videos. I'm very impressed. This day and time, a shop might have sold the customer another computer as well as the cat. You seem like a good person. Shame tou don't practice your craft in Florida !!
Jim
Yeah, tell vinny I watched all 3 parts to find out what's going on and the end result!
Hey South Main, thanks so much for sending me a link to this video. I was curious to see if the owner was going to fix the converter.
Do you ever point a customer to the video you made when repairing their car? The guy who was playing swaptronics with the ECU could learn something from these videos.
The customer was a she, the big challenge being to drive home, and then navigate to a URL? What's that browser for, why didn't you tell me my car needed one? If she didn't find him online to begin with, why complicate things? Answering the call to: I deleted the bookmark to google where in I found you and the address you gave me isn't working, can you...
@@HighestRank yes the customer was a she but the one who did the ecu swap was her son from what's been said so yeah
Sounds like a young guy who knew enough to be dangerous.
Some people have no mechanical aptitude. When plugging in is would have been obvious the parts didn't match.
Good welding, thoughtful in replacing the fused used to replace blown one, adding anti-seize to studs and saving customer money by using a less expensive converter. Good work repairing the alignment blocks which were installed incorrectly. I enjoyed the professional way you located and corrected the various issues with this car. Well done video and thank you for not using fowl language in your video.................
The art of doing everything right. :)
You kick ass man! I wish I had a great mechanic like you I could see. Love your work.
These are my thoughts. !!!!
There's just something about hearing a welder sizzle...it's almost as satisfying as hearing plastic connectors click together, you know? :>) Thanks Eric for another good one.
100% agree!
hearing a good weld is like listening to bacon cook......both are great
Getting those plastic connectors apart after 200,000 miles without breaking anything, not so much.
Love these 3800 Series II engines... they’re darn near bullet proof! Oh, and thanks for the update. I was wondering if the owner would get you to replace the Cat.

Magnaflow makes very good aftermarket catalytic converters. Most of the time, they are direct bolt in and also perform better than the original equipment.
This is what my mechanic is getting for my 2002 Camaro 3.8L .... so expensive 😮😢
I couldn't wait to hear you give that thing full beans with the new cat! Next time maybe. lol Beautiful exhaust work indeed sir. Thanks Dr. O!
Baxrok2 You don't thrash customer's cars or shouldn't anyhow. Mechanics diagnose and repair for a living, personal cars however well..... That's different.
I wasn't suggesting a 'thrashing,' just a nice throttle blip to confirm that the car could breathe. Everybody knows that Eric doesn't "thrash" customers cars.
Actually Eric, I love watching your high speed welding. I'm sure the management at my work would love me to work like that! LOL!
I was totally "exhausted" after watching your video. Great job, sir!
Great videos. But anyone watching, wear long sleeves and gloves, when welding; unless you want to end up with skin cancer.
excellent job as usual...just got back from a vacation from niagara falls ..wanted to stop by on the way back home to mass but my other half was not hearing it ..o well next time.
A real honest mechanic! Don’t tell people they need something they don’t and are really good at diagnosing from the simplest things not just assuming something major is wrong. Still are good honest hard working people out there. Keep up the great content!
I had to use a cast iron cutting diamond blade to cut the donut flange bolts on my truck. They were so heat hardened they would remove the teeth from a standard metal cutting blade in about 5 seconds.
Is it hardened from the factory? Or is that from heat cycling??
we appreciate your videos and everything you do. thank you and much love from a fellow new yorker.
3-4 OUT THE DOOR.
Nice repair Eric. Your exhaust pipe welds are pretty good.
Man I think your one of the good guys working on customers cars. I really appreciate what you do and how you explain things. By the way, there’s nothing wrong with your welding.
You should've straight piped that sucka!!! @11:55 Didn't the last guy you let use you air said it rusted out his rims? Be careful of this one. LOL
I like the torch in the grinding effects very good Eric thank you it makes the whole video
Great job ERIC
roberto ruiz we used to tell customers in the HD dealerships well sir you can get your bike right or you can have it fixed right now... You wouldn't believe the blank stares I used to get.
Can't believe I sat through both videos. It was like a miniseries. But you're just so damn informative. LOL, good job as usual. Thanks for the info you put out there.
that intersection of 70a and 415 is awful. It's like people must take some stupid pills before getting there.
Or the one down by Kanona to 415....
South Main Auto Repair yeah that one is probably worse. The point by the gas station makes the "let's see if we can have a wreck trifecta"
another thing that helps with slide on/clamped exhaust parts for future removal ease: silicone. makes its easy to slide them on, and easier to take apart in the future
This sounds negative but I'm just looking out for you....where is your head protection under that welding mask. Them sparks can permanently remove your follicles. Video still gets a like, because I'm not being negative. I positively want you to keep your hair. btw, nice welds.
No gloves, no sleeves, no head protection. Probably ought to invest in those...
Real men don't need PPE. I TIG weld without gloves because the women love my hand tan and scent of burnt hair.
"Don't even think about it woman, you'll look like the tin man!"
Laughed my ass off!!
You glue metal with metal better than I could Eric, nice job!
had to put my welding goggles on, bright. I like to know the cost before I jump in and put parts on, but with a 3800 it is good to keep them running as long as possible.
Eric,
You need one of those Diablo carbide tipped blades from home depot for your Sawzall. Get the one for heavy metal, you'll thank yourself later.
Even cuts through leaf spring bolts with no problem.
Those blades are amazing. Cut through steel like a hot knife through butter.
still wouldn't cut that thing, its stainless that's been heat cycled a bazillion times.
MrHemi4spd
Hmmm, didn't think about stainless, that can be a mean metal for cutting. Now I gotta find an old stainless cat and try it.
But the carbide tipped diablo blade relies on self generated heat to assist in cutting.
Those new Diablo metal blades look pretty darn impressive. I'm definitely gonna pick one up. Meanwhile, if you don't happen to have a cutting torch, there's abrasive cutting wheels.
Not Boring Sir! For me, what makes a Great Video is information and thoroughness.. You covered both! Also, Welding Looked Solid to me. Great Job!
Welding without gloves, what a beast
He does that alot I notixe, I must be a whimp, or maybe I am just a bad welder idk.
A real true mechanic. Excellent job well done. 😊
With all the exhaust systems I've had and seen replaced, I've never seen someone cut off the ends of the U bolt! Nice touch!
Geoff Davies - Ha! Yes. I'm just shade-tree, so I figure some speed bumps or raised driveways should grind 'em off eventually...unless they're really long, then vice-grips and a wig-wag'll take care of them.
I don't know if you have ever walked under a car on a lift but the first time you run your mellon into one of those u-bolt hanging down, I bet you will cut them all off after that!
Love ya vids dude . But put some gloves on when welding and torching show theses youngsters some health and safety . 👍👍👍👍👍
good work on an old driver, nice. customer should be happy camper.
Cutting that flange with a torch...freehand, no less...
I'm impressed. Damn...you are a doctor.
You're not a welder? Looked pretty darn good to me.
Great job, but I fear the new cat is dead by now too. The plastic upper intake manifold on those 3800s always melted around the EGR stove pipe causing a coolant leak. This allowed the engine to eat a steady stream of coolant until the cat plugged up or the oil got contaminated enough to spin a bearing.
