Even as a child, I've always thought of Spongebob as more than just a favourite show I grew up with. Never had the words till now: A testament to how creativity, imagination and passion can change the lives of many. Truly inspirational.
I remember I would see all these names on the intro and credit and wouldn't think much of it but now I actually appreciate how much time and effort these people put into to make this show a masterpiece.
You know a show is legendary when there are countless legendary memes that come from it. I wish Gen Z could be re-named the SpongeBob Generation, but I dont think we'll ever come up with any kind of art that was as creative or unique as those first 3 seasons. Stephen Hillenburg's passing became an unexpected "where were you" moment for me. RIP to a legend and thanks for everything.
anyone remember the feeling waking up on Saturday morning as a kid just to watch spongebob back in its glory days? The original spongebob will always be the best imo.
The idea that there are human beings like Stephen Hillenburg really restores ones faith in humanity. A marine biologist comes up with an idea about a sponge living under the sea and the whole fictional reality surrounding it. I don't know, I just love every bit of it and wish there were more people this original and brave enough to carry out their crazy ideas. By the way, there is a species of marine sponge named after him.
Watching this as a 15 year old is really bittersweet. I watched SpongeBob as a 5 year old (nothing's changed, but I now understand the supposed "adult" jokes) and now I have a 4 year old sister and an almost-2 year old brother who loves the show. It's funny how a little idea can someday turn into something that's positively influenced so many childhoods. Rest in peace, Stephen Hillenburg. Thanks for all the amazing memories.
When my kids were young, we'd lay on the bed together and watch an hour of Sponge Bob together before sending them off to bed. One of those kids is now off to college and the other is not far behind. To this day, we'll recite some of our favorite lines of dialog spontaneously to each other from memory. The "raspberry speak" from the Rock Bottom episode will get pulled out when I am trying to get their attention ( "I 'phhhbtt' said, When 'phhhbtt' will you 'phhhbtt' be home tonight 'phhhbtt'?") Those early seasons (say 1 - 10) have really been a common experience that we share to this day. And I don't mind saying that even though I'm over 50, I'll still watch the older episodes when I simply want to chill. Thank you Mr. Hillenburg for all the amazing memories, indeed.
Having been born around the time SpongeBob became a hit, and growing up with the show, this documentary was awesome to see. And even as a kid I always thought SpongeBob and Rocko's Modern Life had this strange connection, now I know why
Imagine going against the wishes of the late Stephen Hillenburg for the sake of greed. Watching him in this video enrages me even more with what Nickelodeon is doing to his show.
Agreed. They’re just gonna run it into the ground and ruin it. I never realized how much this show was a combination of all his passions, and they just throw that in the trash for the money they may make
Hopefully Nickelodeon will see the fault in this and go ahead and end it. Spongebob has had such a righteous run since it premiered it only seems right that they end it on the same note.
rip to a real one. this guys work was literally my childhood and even up till today as a 21 year old i can still sit down and watch sponge bob no problem
I had the opportunity to have an unofficial, private tour of the animation studios and meet a lot of directors and animators (I've had friends who've worked there). The working environment there is like nothing I've ever seen; everyone is goofy and, at first you think that they don't get anything done because I saw more people goofing off than working, but they all seem like the best of friends and being somewhere that lets them be happy and free, lets them be passionate about their work, which is why they actually get stuff done and get it done well. They're allowed to love what they do.
You can't watch Spongebob and not smile/laugh, it's a very special program and gift to all who enjoyed it. There are so many daily tasks I do that remind me of things I've seen on Spongebob it's unreal. Case in point I can't take out the trash without remembering Graveyard Shift. (My favorite episode
*Funny how these stories are often them getting told no by multiple people and studios but this seems to be the complete opposite, SpongeBob was just meant to be. RIP Stephen. Thank you.*
Man, real genuine passion went into the series and seeing the way it is now ever since Stephen had passed, it doesn't have the same magic and feel like it used to anymore. You can tell they are just milking spongebob now that they have all these spin offs and stuff
He even said he never wanted the spin-offs, they waited till after he passed to announce it. I was so upset that they did that. But he also said he didn’t rant spin-offs in the interview a long time ago, Way before his passing. who knows how he would’ve felt after all those years. I’m not him and don’t know him so I can only assume.
I think that they should have stopped. It just didn't feel like it was about SpongeBob anymore, Nickelodeon as a company doesn't even let in new talent like they did when they fist started out. I miss being able to see other cartoons before they were all moved to Nick at Night or NickToons. Now they just don't air unless it's 2am during work and school nights.
What a cartoon. I watched these with my little girl. Bought videotapes, then bought DVDs, bought the video game and we [layed the life out of it while laughing our butts off. I will watch them by myself now just because they are funny as hell and they remind me of the times as a single Dad raising my girl. She will graduate 12/21 with double Bachelor's degrees from U of Washington. This fun fact has nothing to do with SpongeBob but I am just so damn proud of her and like to tell people. Wait, maybe SpongeBob has a lot to do with it.

i recommend searching up a playlist of all the official spongebob soundtracks
So blessed to grow up at a time where i could watch this as a child
Stephen literally said to himself: "eh, I don't really have an idea for a show."
And then came up with one of the biggest cartoons ever created on television.
Imagine if he changed his mind...
I discovered this at 22 years old on July 26th 2021.
I grew up with SpongeBob.
*This* is a gift I didn't see coming, but I love it so much
I’m about to turn 24 and I agree with you. Growing up with the original Spongebob, this is gold.
I turned 26 last week and I agree
Suspiciously accurate
Rest In Peace, unfortunate that the company didn’t let the show end when he wanted it to and let the quality deteriorate
Wow I’m 25 and I grew up watching spongebob never once have I seen the faces of the creators other than the voice actor for spongebob. I’ve developed a real appreciation for the production of animation after watching this.
Butch Hartman: DURR I MADE YOUR CHILDHOOD DURR!!!
Stephen Hillenburg: I recorded myself singing the Spongebob theme inside of a shell. :)
RiP Stephen Hillenburg.
It's always the good ones to go...
@@BabyLambCreations I know right 😔
Even as a child, I've always thought of Spongebob as more than just a favourite show I grew up with.
Never had the words till now: A testament to how creativity, imagination and passion can change the lives of many.
Truly inspirational.
I remember I would see all these names on the intro and credit and wouldn't think much of it but now I actually appreciate how much time and effort these people put into to make this show a masterpiece.
I took interest in Paul tibbits name i dont know why tbh I was just a confused kid
I ripped...my pants.
anyone remember the feeling waking up on Saturday morning as a kid just to watch spongebob back in its glory days? The original spongebob will always be the best imo.
The idea that there are human beings like Stephen Hillenburg really restores ones faith in humanity. A marine biologist comes up with an idea about a sponge living under the sea and the whole fictional reality surrounding it. I don't know, I just love every bit of it and wish there were more people this original and brave enough to carry out their crazy ideas. By the way, there is a species of marine sponge named after him.
RIP STEPHEN HILLENBURG
the quality of the video just make this more heart warming as a classic
This whole video makes me wanna cry so hard, while basically being reminded that this show use to have more of a soul.
every single frame in the early seasons conveys something new. they had legitimate animation geniuses working on this show
They all knew that they were making a masterpiece that will stay forever in people hearts
Stephen was a genius. God rest his soul.
Having been born around the time SpongeBob became a hit, and growing up with the show, this documentary was awesome to see. And even as a kid I always thought SpongeBob and Rocko's Modern Life had this strange connection, now I know why
I love the part where the production team was being so goofy and lighthearted. This stuff gives me life, man.
i met the creator once as a kid and shook his hand. was friends with his son in skool. probably the biggest highlight of my life tbh. rip man
Rip Stephen Hillenburg he truly made many childhoods special
Imagine going against the wishes of the late Stephen Hillenburg for the sake of greed. Watching him in this video enrages me even more with what Nickelodeon is doing to his show.

Agreed. They’re just gonna run it into the ground and ruin it. I never realized how much this show was a combination of all his passions, and they just throw that in the trash for the money they may make
The show has been pretty bad for like 16 years now
Hopefully Nickelodeon will see the fault in this and go ahead and end it. Spongebob has had such a righteous run since it premiered it only seems right that they end it on the same note.
what do you mean steve worked on a spin off tom kenny confirmed that
rip to a real one. this guys work was literally my childhood and even up till today as a 21 year old i can still sit down and watch sponge bob no problem
The amount of talent present in this show, was unmatched. Truly something special. Stephen will live on in our hearts, and memories.
Little did he know he created the most iconic animated tv show of all time
I had the opportunity to have an unofficial, private tour of the animation studios and meet a lot of directors and animators (I've had friends who've worked there).
That’s really sweet! :)
Greatest children’s animated show ever. Period.
Season 1-3, that is all you need. I remember thinking Spongebob was very similar to Rocko's Modern Life. Now it all makes sense.
Or whenever I get the chance with the correct context I shout out "he was number 1!"
That episode got me through my first job, when my first time doing night shift felt scary 💛
A wonderful man, who achieved far more than he could have ever known. =)
So happy to have had my childhood align with this wonderful show.
Seasons 1-3 are incredible. They did amazing work
The voice for Squidward was so well chosen really. It just sounds like he has a big nose.
I’m so used to these voices for these characters it felt like the characters were the voice actors and the cast were the cartoons
*Funny how these stories are often them getting told no by multiple people and studios but this seems to be the complete opposite, SpongeBob was just meant to be. RIP Stephen. Thank you.*
Amen ❤️ It’s so true!
Shout out to all the mid-late 20 somethings that grew up with this show and still quote it daily!
Thank you for the memories Stephen! :)
These are the type of videos UA-cam needs to recommend more often... I miss my childhood so much
Man, real genuine passion went into the series and seeing the way it is now ever since Stephen had passed, it doesn't have the same magic and feel like it used to anymore.
Rest In Peace Stephen Hillenburg, you made my childhood happy along with many other kids.
That's really sweet, I remember watching spongebob with my parents growing up, I cherish those memories.
This brought a smile to my face. Congrats to your girl and good on you for raising her right man
