      Omixam yeah I agree, while I’m not saying the current show it’s bad, I mean it’s still my favorite from the rest, he doesn’t get quite as much recognition as he deserves, I can’t still comprehend how Fallon is still on top at this point.

      dude any comedian's dream is to host tonight show
      conan worked 17 years in hopes of hosting tonight show and than this happens
      i think something broke that day in conan and he is in some kind of depression
      he doesnt have confidence like before and always when he talk you get the feeling he thinks he is the lowest of talk show hosts today, which is sad knowing how good conan is.

      Joker Levin No he should have went on his own and made them regret it. Not stood off to the side on the same network while a guy is trying to build a new audience and say "I'm still here if you want me back." Problem is Jay's not talented enough to start his own show, he needs to float on a brand like the Tonight Show and make safe, lame jokes that play well to 50+ year-olds in the flyover states.

  • @peoplez129

    See, Leno could act like he wasn't the bad guy, but the fact was that Leno could have stepped aside at any moment. We all know that Leno was desperate to get back on TV almost as soon as he was off, he went on other shows as a guest, and you could just tell he didn't like being on the other side of the desk. Blame executives all he wants, we all know that's all a lie Leno used to cover up the fact that he left Conan hanging. What really happened was Leno wanted his show back, had pull with executives, and pulled those strings.
    And for Leno to not even soo much as reach out to Conan was just a slap in the face....Leno was such a coward he couldn't even face the guy he screwed over.....while Leno acted like he was the one getting screwed over.

      C North None of these guys that hung around together as young comics talk to each other anymore. The competitive nature of money and show business along with family life does that to old friendships. It even happens with us commoners. Jay is a workaholic and did a lot of stand up when off the show. Not because he needs the money but tell me honestly you would have turned it down.

    • @y1e2t34i

      If you read Thew War for Late Night, Bill Carter does a good job of giving Leno's side of this: NBC asked him to come back to a job that he loved doing, they tried to compromise, and Conan left. The analogy that Jay used was it's Show Business; you don't hate Tom Cruise for getting a part that Brad Pitt was after. Not saying I agree with the logic but I do think it's a more morally gray area then people make it out

    Everyone got screwed in that deal. Conan said he wanted the TS and NBC fired Jay to give it to Conan, so they wouldn't compete with Conan. NBC didn't want to compete with Jay and cancelled shows in prime time to accommodate Jay. NBC didn't like the ratings of Jay's show, the local news and the TS with Conan and decided to cancel Jay and move it ahead of the TS. Conan didn't like that and wanted to stick up for Jimmy and Carson and NBC wanted to enforce it and make Conan like or he was fired. Conan bowed out and Jay replaced Conan. Then a few years later NBC fired Jay again for Jimmy. This was all NBC's mess, they screwed everyone!

    • @flea41593
      @flea41593 6 років тому +15

      The only part that you are forgetting is that Jay agreed before he signed his last deal that Conan was his successor. NBC wanted to groom Conan to take over for Jay. The idea is that they didn't want to lose either talent. The problem came when it was Jay's time to leave. He didn't want to go. He felt like he was still the biggest name in late night. Whether that is true or not, he didn't honor his original agreement and in turn started a domino effect. NBC never fired Leno. His contract was up and he was supposed to leave, he didn't, then they undermined Conan's Tonight Show by having Jay on right before him. If he was the king of late night then he should have walked away to another network.

      You summarized it perfectly. That is exactly what happened.

    • @bechtoea
      @bechtoea 5 років тому

      @@flea41593 The problem was, they wouldn't let Leno go to another network. It wasn't like he got his 10PM show on NBC at gunpoint. That was NBC's decision. They could have let Leno go, but if they did that, he would have been on at 11:30PM on another network in short order because Leno wasn't going to sign a non-compete clause.
      There also was obvious doubt in Conan. If they had full confidence, they would have told Leno go wherever and let Conan take it over.
      The bottom line is late night changed. It changed alot over the last 10 years. I don't think Leno, Letterman, or Conan could compete in the "internet short" world we have now. So it all worked out.

    • @SIRgw

      @@bechtoea Conan's UA-cam has more clips over a million views than any other late night host today. I agree that the format has changed, i just think he was able to change with it. I think you have a good thesis, but I disagree with the conclusion . Have a great one.

    Conan was always funnier than Jay Leno. I only watched Tonight Show to the end because Late Night w. Conan was after right. They thought Conan wasnt right fit. Jimmy Fallon hosts Tonight and he uses basically the same humour style as Conan. So, in hind sight they should have given Conan at least more time to settle into Tonight Show.

    • @vincepurpura8905
      @vincepurpura8905 5 років тому +1

      I agree, earlier time slot meant a different audience, (older, didn't get Conan's humor)
      Personally I don't think Fallon's been funny since he left SNL. And his Co players were funny, which helped. Whenever Horatio Sans would be in a skit, he made Fallon lose it. Same goes for Will Ferrell.

They originally wanted to just bring Jay's show to 11:35 and bump the Tonight Show to 12:05 because Jay didn't want to retire or anything. Conan didn't think the Tonight Show should be bumped so left the network and then they just gave it back to Jay. tbh i root for conan but if you were watching when all this went down, jay leno was still one of the kings of late night along with letterman, and even when conan got the spot, the ratings took a nosedive. people just didn't take to him for a primetime slot. if he had mass appeal one of the other major networks would have snatched up him. cbs could have offered him a spot right after letterman or before, abc could've replaced kimmel, fallon, etc. i still like them both. but nbc asked jay to come back because he was drawing in crowds, he had a few years of falling ratings but he recovered and had good ones before the conan ordeal. i do agree with conan that perhaps he would have handled it differently, i would have too, but that's a hard position for Jay and Conan both...and it's not like jay was cruel or nay nee nay nee boo boo to him. plus if i remember, 11: 30 was the tonight show timeslot, competing with daily show/colbert is no easy thing to do, they were just as if not more popular than network hosts, and I think a lot of networks wanted to stick with the giants they knew could draw in ratings. and cbs nabbing colbert was brilliant. i watch colbert more than letterman or conan or leno combined. i don't what else conan wanted. late night was and still is a hard game to play. he stayed on tv...

      In 2009, Conan used to have a late show (where Seth Meyers is now) that followed The Tonight Show (where Jimmy Fallon is now). Jay Leno used to host the Tonight Show, and decided to retire, and then Conan became the host. When the show started to lose viewers and money, the network asked Jay Leno to come back and host a short program in the hour where the Tonight Show was, and move Conan back a half-hour later. Conan didn't like that idea, and the network didn't want to lose Jay Leno, so they paid Conan a LOT of money to leave the show and give it back to Jay Leno, after only seven months.

    really? you think this is all about money? the guy spent years on a career that NBC's decision could have easily ended if TBS didn't pick the guy up. it was his life. and if it was about money, he would have made triple of that sum in just ten years if he kept the job.
