    The best advice I can give is:
    stay away from Social Media and so called Influencers! Both only get you to compare yourself with others and they give you the feeling you need to buy that and have this to be cool and happy… stay away from Temu, Shein and plattforms like that.. All the stuff you shop used to be money and that money used to be precious lifetime you needed to earn it..
    when you realize all that, it is easy not to spend your money.. Greetings from Germany!

      I agree there’s so much comparison online. I do think there are ways of being selective with what you see online, if you follow the right people. But it can be hard to avoid the ads. Great advice ♥️

    I used to buy tons of cloths and shoes, was spending every cent I had (and honestly even more) online. Than I had a boy and stopped working, since I had no money of my own anymore, just a joint bank account with my husband I had to stop shopping cold turkey. I thought it would be very hard, but to my surprise it was not. After a short while I felt liberated. I used to love my closet, suddenly it was a burden. I didn‘t want to spend my little free time i had in the evening arranging cloths I never had any occasion to wear anyway and that didnt fit my body nor my new lifestyle anymore. Started selling everything, couldnt believe how much stuff I had, how much of it was brand new and how much money I had wasted!!! It’s 8 years later now, today I enjoy a small wardrobe and could never go back, it just hurts me to know in what stupid way I used to spend all my money

    I wish I lived in a part of the world where there weren't such extremes of temperature. +35°C or higher in summer, -25° in winter. The amount of clothes you need for that is insane. Just footwear alone: super warm boots for the city in winter, super warm dressier boots, superwarm tall boots for if you need to shovel snow up to your waist, regular-warm boots, regular warm dressier boots, rain boots of varying heights, warm running shoes, lighter running shoes, high heels, flats, numerous pairs of sandals of varying types for summer, the list goes on. And good quality winter stuff is bloody expensive.

    • @gemmaamclean
      @gemmaamclean  7 місяців тому +8

      Yes I can imagine that’s really tough to have such extreme seasons. I guess practicality always wins and if you need it, you need it! Definitely buying good quality at least means you don’t have to constantly shop x

      100%. In such climate you need to have basically 9 wardrobes - for winter, mid season and summer - nice pieces for work, basic pieces to walk around/vacation and something practical/ugly to walk a dog or work in the garden. I can not downsize that. Minimalism is just a joke in my climate )))

    • @Billybloop

      Nobody needs to own that many styles of clothing. No one on this earth needs to own a pair of heels or a pair of dressy boots. Nobody needs all those styles of shoes just for summer. I literally wear either Crocs or cheap jelly shoes in summer and my life hasn't ended. In winter all you need are sneakers and a pair of winter hiking boots. If you work in a professional environment then you need a pair of professional looking shoes but you can literally just slip into them when you get into work and they don't have to be heels or dressy flats, they can be orthopedic shoes or whatever and you can buy those used or at a discount. You can buy winter coats already used. You can buy knitwear already used. You can buy rain boots already used. You are a slave to patriarchal beauty standards for women. You feel like you have to wear all these different trending styles to be accepted. I used to feel this way despite never having the money and I still managed to be physically comfortable. I have lived in Bulgaria where the seasons are unbearable and women absolutely can't afford all those different clothes. The biggest scam is also the bra industry. I am technically a size 38J and I don't wear a bra anymore. I have never been more physically comfortable. Women are told that they need to lift, suck and pull everything in to be socially acceptable. They are told that how they already are when they don't buy all this expensive shit is ugly and unacceptable. It's fucking ridiculous. I'm not saying I don't have my own personal style, I live for sanrio and florals and ultra feminine, loose flowy, boho, oversized styles, but I don't buy clothes all the time and I refuse to spend a lot of money on anything and I don't care if I look a bit 'mis matched' and I'm not the pinnacle of fashion.

      I live in such climate as well. Working from home is a blessing for me when it comes to my wardrobe. Nobody would give a f if I was sitting in my pyjamas all day (I don’t, but I mostly wear athleisure as I walk my son to the kindergarden). But even when I was working from office on daily basis, I didn’t need so many pairs of shoes. And regarding transition between seasons, I have the same set for winter -> spring and autumn -> winter also I have one set for spring -> summer -> autumn. But generally I have a base clothes I can wear the year round, and then some season specific, but they are in minority.

    I wanted to stop shopping for a year or two now, I really got sucked in about five years ago. When I realised I needed to stop, I used to shop on and off anyway, then be annoyed with myself. I watched similar videos to help me, but I still didn’t feel I could stop. Then I realised that I was buying constantly because I was watching clothes all the time and started borrowing books from library instead to help me to pass my resting time in different way. It only recently hit me, that my wardrobe was too full and I can’t fit any more stuff, that’s when I didn’t want to look at clothes any more. It’s been a month, I still looked at clothes from time to time, desired them and left it till later. Mentally I could already do it, then it just didn’t make any sense. I want to give my wardrobe some love now and I will focus on wardrobe clarity and declutterring. For once I felt satisfied with what I’ve got.

    This is all so real...I have struggled with shopping addiction for years. I noticed that it's very closely tied to my body image and my inability to sit with negative emotions. I think the impulsivity can be tied to ADHD which I have as well. I would say really driving home the truth that no new outfit is going to make me feel better about my body long term, and working with a therapist have been the most important for me. Finding some hobbies that I truly love that can give me some of that dopamine rush to replace shopping has been crucial as well. I've such a similar story to you, changing careers into fashion, working retail in Galway and always wasting my paycheck on clothing. I now know the route cause was due to my friends all being in a differing class to me and trying to match their spending without having the means to. I kept up appearances but I cut all opportunities for important life stuff savings. I found navigating finances so difficult once I hit 18 but I also come from a family who had no financial sense in their lives. Sometimes buying something *special* like a good deal on a vintage piece gave me a feeling of individuality and independence which is hilarious as it was taking away my independence by spending. Such an important topic and love your honesty on the subject, thank you Gemma!

    • @gemmaamclean
      @gemmaamclean  6 місяців тому

      It’s such a funny thing isn’t it, when we feel like shopping is empowering us but really it’s taking away our financial power. That’s such a great way to put it! It can be really hard to keep up with other people but we also never know how much they can actually afford the things he they have either. Funny if we’re all going into debt to keep up with each other, when we’d all be better off just being honest about our situations and take the pressure off. Xx

    This year I challenged myself to a low buy clothing year and to help me with this I had to keep a running list on my phone of everything I bought. This has been eye opening. I wouldn't say I have been spending like crazy, but I would not say I've done a low buy so far. The list has slowed me down, I think, with continuing to buy so much. I look over the list as a reminder of all I added to my closet (I buy 2nd hand and often out of season so a lot of these new additions are unworn and packed away for winter) to work on being satisfied. It is a struggle!

    I'm really glad you're talking about this. When I was younger clothes shopping was never seen as a negative thing. I never got any guidance about spending less on clothes so I never knew it was an issue. I didn't spend loads because I have always been a bit frugal, but I certainly wish I'd spent less and saved much more instead. I've never spent a lot on alcohol, meals out or holidays but clothes shopping has always been something I enjoyed. I think it's because it made me feel more in control of my life, plus it was an 'armour' against bullying at school. I'm low buy now but sometimes find myself wandering round the shops or watching fashion hauls to see what's new in the shops. I am going to try to shift my mindset towards my goals instead, clothes shopping often just leaves me feeling empty because like you say, it can't change your life, it only depletes your money.

Not that I was applied with clothes but I don’t remember anyone teaching me to have limits around it. 100% clothing is armour. I think I used it as a crutch to boost my self esteem. I think that’s a great idea to focus on your goals. I’m going to aim to do the same xx

It's horrible thinking of the money we could've saved but at least we can start changing things now.

And you see really quickly that it takes forever for something to be worn out. So that is eye opening. I also use habit tracking app daily to note down if i made any clothes or beauty purchases and it actually seems to help. It so fun to see that your success rate is high and it also keeps you mindful and accountable. I have been keeping a spreadsheet of clothing and beauty stuff with prices, when bought and when worn first. That started as just trying to keep track but also is eye opening in a sense that i had to buy something but 6 months later still not worn it... i am not doing a no buy but defintely a very low buy and also these methods have been really helpful and grounding to me.

    I bought last piece of clothing in December and this was stupid. Recently I decluttered my wardrobe and it's amazing Soon I will move to my new apartment, and as a mortgage is coming I will not buy clothes, shoes or kitchen stuff unless absolutely necessary. Movings as well as cleaning apartment after my deceased parents were lessons that most of clothes are useless and not needed. Having less saves a space and our wallet.

    My no buy is going sorta well !! It's like a roller coaster tbh, I realised I attach a LOT of my self worth to what clothes I wear, I used to shop a LOT for my fantasy self and also never think about how sustainable my clothes were or whether I'd even want to wear them in the long run. I started around the middle of January and these changes are slowly setting in, which im very happy about . I also realised how much I looked to buying something or anything at all , to regulate my emotions instead of doing the proper deep work. I am also struggling with being more compassionate towards myself overall and not blaming me when I do find myself succumbing to old mental habits and looking for those superficial hits of dopamine. It has also made me look at all kinds if consumption related habits that I have , like the content I consume on social media, the food I eat and made me critical and more intentional about it all !

    I never had a clothes shopping problem until I started working in fashion retail. The store I work for wants it''s staff to only wear there clothing and they prefer we wear more current stock rather than older stuff, It's frustrating that I have to keep buying clothing to wear for work but I also need the job in order to afford the to survive...

    • @gemmaamclean
      @gemmaamclean  6 місяців тому

      That’s a great point! Working in retail really makes you want to shop more. Is it the customer mindset rubbing off on us or we see people spending loads of money on themselves all day long and feel we deserve that too? But if your company insists you wear there clothing they should be giving you a uniform allowance, not expecting it to come out of your own pocket xx

    I started buying a lot of clothes about 8 months ago. I had lost more than 40kgs (100 lbs) and 95% of my clothes no longer fitted and/or were not part of the new me. I started a job in the wormens fashion department of a department store and had access to quality clothing at generous discount rates so of course I started spending. But I did it consciously with mostly classic pieces in a particular colour palette so it all works well together. I now look at my wardrobe and can see dozens of outfit combinations whereas my previous wardrobe was full of items that never got worn. I'm now at a stage where I have all seasons covered, and I'm prepared for any occasion that might crop up. I feel ready to stop shopping and just enjoy what I have. There are a few items I'm on the lookout for but those purchases will be critically evaluated.

      @@Heidi-y3l thank you, so pleased you enjoyed it. Initially I did some research into seasonal colour palettes, taking my hair colour, eye colour and skin tone into account. It’s broken down into Spring, summer, autumn and winter at its most basic form. It can be useful to compare yourself to any Celebes that have similar colouring as lots of people do colour analysis for celebrities. When I did my professional styling course I learned more about colour analysis and confirmed what I thought, that I’m an autumn. Based on hazel eyes, brown hair with a red undertone and neutral - pink undertone. But I started out by googling first.

      @@gemmaamclean I live in china and order fabric directly from the factory. You wouldn't believe the technology they have in these factories. They have a computerized machine for everything and they are able to mass produce so rapidly. I recently ordered 6 meters of calico cotton with a ditzy floral design and it was around £6 in UK money. Sellers order this in western countries plus shipping and they jack up the price to make a profit.
