Why we Buy Duplicate Items for Our Wardrobe & and why we need to stop

Why do we buy the same items over and over again for our wardrobes? Why do we wear identical items on repeat, instead of just owning one of each item? Today I wanted to sit down and chat about why we buy duplicate clothing items, and why this may not be so good for our style or our wardrobes. I would love to hear your opinions on the situation, and if there's an angle I haven't even considered ...

Thank you so much for the comment about wearing things we like, even if we’re feeling body conscious. I needed to hear it!
@@GP-vf6dv you’re welcome lovely ♥️
Lovely.
Hey, what size is the jumper?x
Beige V-Neck Ribbed Knit Sweater and Scarf Set: reurl.cc/vvx8dy (I'm wearing size M) xx
Your voice is so calming and not pushy at all thank you ❤
@@XM_Savage007 aw thank you lovely! I hope I never sound pushy, not my kinda vibe 😊 xx
I love this video so much. So many gorgeous outfits that really show how hard a well-chosen garment can work in a well-curated wardrobe.
So glad you like it! It’s true, such a hard working piece x
For a very long time, I was on the hunt for "the perfect" cable knit jumper. I really tried to find it secondhand. I thought I would find a lot to choose from but searched for so long with no success. So when I finally found one that was slightly close to what I imagined, I bought it because I was afraid what if I won't find any better? Shopping secondhand I often feel that fomo... So over the last two years I bought several cream cable knits that are almost there but still neither of them are "perfect". I don't want to get rid of the "almost right" ones so I wear those because I like the cream cable knit look so much! And also I don't want to be wasteful. But still if I found "the perfect" cable knit, I would be afraid that it would wear out quicker if I wore it all the time, so I would still keep one or two of the not perfect ones to wear on rotation. Does it make any sence? 🫣 What would be your suggestion for this situation?
Thats a tough one because sometimes it can be a very long search for that “perfect “ item and sometimes it doesn’t even exist yet. It’s just a dream pieces we’ve invented in our heads 😂 as long as you can find one you still really like and enjoy wearing I think it’s a great option to have while you keep hunting for that more ideal piece. I think if you’re wearing the items then they’re worth having. But if you’re not liking them or wearing them much they’re not worth hanging onto. I usually say whatever FEELS like the best option for you. Xx
@@gemmaamclean Yes! Thank you for pointing it out that the perfect pieces don't even exist! I guess I have to learn how to knit a jumper myself, or I should let go of my perfectionism and be content with what I already have. So if I am content, I stop searching and purchasing the same type of clothing over and over... wow! Revelation! 😃 Thank you, Gemma! ☺
@ I bought a jumper knitting pattern that I really need to get started on 😂 running out of time to have a new jumper by winter! Haha maybe it’s a balance about being picky about the pieces we introduce into our wardrobes, but also knowing when to compromise if a piece still feels nice to wear and matches our style. Xx
I love buying duplicates. Currently I have very refined style uniform that feels like “me” that I wear everyday apart from special occasions. I do wear different jackets and coats depending on weather conditions and different shoes. Buying duplicates is extremely useful because clothes gets worn out very quickly if you wear it this often. Wish I bought more of my favourite jeans as sadly they are not available anymore even second hand.
@@mytransparentwardrobe that’s a great point, I love a style uniform too!
I have to disagree. I like to wear certainly styles and colours and don’t want a wardrobe full of different colours and styles that don’t go together. Its a nightmare finding jeans that even fit so when I find a good pair I get 2 or 3. I still only have a very small wardrobe of items and I don’t have to waste time thinking about items
@@Kittycats26 they’re all valid points! I guess part of my point is having duplicates that we don’t wear, like my examples of my jumpers that I now prefer one over the other. I love a style uniform and rewearing very similar things. I guess this is where sometimes duplicates make sense and sometime they don’t xx
I guess it’s all about knowing what works for you. I’m petite, and I have real trouble finding long sleeved t shirts which fit properly - but they’re part of my basic outfit formula so I do buy several the same when I find them. I don’t want multiples of more occasionally used items, though.
@@AlexLouiseWest yeh that makes a lot of sense! Same for me, im happy to have various pairs of tailored trousers or jeans, in slightly different colour or styles. I think for those core essentials it makes sense to duplicate, and everyone’s essentials are different x
My wardrobe is quite minimal but if I like an item, I ALWAYS buy a dupe of it, but in another colour. Generally one is a dark neutral, while the other is a bright, or a light neutral. This makes mixing and matching really easy - if I know a top in x colour goes with my trousers, I know that the same top in y colour will also work. I do have some accidental duplicates - I found the perfect trouser and bought it in navy, but then found I preferred it in black. I pensioned off the navy ones for rambling/gardening.
@@carolefletcher I guess it works for the pieces we know are part of our core style, but maybe not for other pieces. It’s great you know your style so well! X
I find it hard when I love a certain dress or skirt I buy two sometimes in case I can’t get them again 🤍
@@sophiawisdomharps yeh I get that!
Quite a few of my favourites were discontinued, so I'm glad I have dupes of them.
This is a challenging subject. On the one hand. If you know what you like and buy multiples, it’s logical because it’s exactly what you wear all the time. On the other hand too many of the same is true that it will seem like it’s the same but that’s uniform dressing. It’s better than buying into trends. That’s more wasteful because it’s usually less likely they’ll be worn. I’m pro duplicates.
I don’t believe all duplicates are bad either. Like I have multiple pairs of jeans and wear them all, but they’re not the exact same either. But if I had 2 or 3 of the exact same pair that might be a bit of a waste. Whereas I have a few pairs of black wide leg trousers, but one is silky, one is velvet and one is a smarter pair. Similar, but not exact dupes so they serve their own purpose. I’m all for uniform dressing too! xx
Your cream jumpers are so diferent. The pattern. The fit. The purpose.
@@cristinapiano6190 it doesn’t feel as different to me, and I’m reaching for the chunkier fit way more already. To me they serve a similar purpose but only one seems to be the preferred choice x
@@gemmaamclean If you still like the other one, try dyeing it. If it's a pure fibre or even a blend, it should take colour fairly well.
I do that on purpose. It works for me. If a trousers or jumpers or shirts work on perfection and fit amazing i buy them on diferent colours or duplicates.
@@cristinapiano6190 I think different colours don’t always count as dupes because they’re not just replicas of each other x
I'm okay with having duplicates in different colours if it's something that is a part of my style uniform like relaxed a button down shirt. I have three of the same shirt in different colours and I have worn them between 29 and 72 times and still love wearing them. On the other hand I have three pairs of the same shorts in different colours and I don't wear shorts that often, so that definitely is excessive. If it's something I wear very often, and they give different vibes I'm okay with buying duplicates but if it's something I rarely reach for, it's not worth it to me.
@@sigriddjernaes I guess sometimes having multiples work and sometimes it doesn’t. You’re right, if we’re wearing the items then great, but if we’re buying duplicates but not wearing them then what’s the point x
It's so hard to be aware of the habit of buying iterations of the same items. I guess we "like what we like" and are drawn to it. I've tried no spending periods this year to help with this.
@@cm-nj it’s true, we are drawn to things over and over again. Sometimes having a better idea of what’s in your wardrobe can help, whether that’s doing a regular clean out and just putting everything back in one by one, or trying to wear more of what you own. Xx
@@gemmaamclean I'm going to try 25 in 25 next year. My goal is to not buy more than 25 new items of clothing or shoes next year. I just thought it up today and now that I'm putting in writing here, I'm committed to doing it.
@ that’s a great idea! I love the sound of that 😊
What a coincidence as I just bought another sweatshirt I don’t need because it is off-the-shoulder and I don’t have anything off the shoulder. But I’m trying really hard to not buy another, even though there’s this cute Berkley Uni jumper I want.
I guess an off shoulder sweater isn’t a duplicate if you don’t already have one like that. It’s still a different vibe. Xx
I'm so glad you've covered this topic. I am a nightmare for buying dupilcates. I have been known to buy 10+ of the same basic top as I've seen it on sale and consider it so versatile and such a staple that I couldn't resist. I do think that this is a mental health issue for me, and I want to stop doing it as I have too many multiple items that are the same (or similar like different colour). My wardrobe is busting, and I inevitability can not wear all of my items. I usually go off them before too long as I change my style regularly, too. Does anyone else have the same problem?
@@L64934 I’m sorry you feel you’re struggling with this so much. It may be a case where you’re buying them for some kind of comfort or security, if you feel like that has any relevance in other areas of your life for you. I’m no therapist so I can’t advise there but I do know I express my other issues through shopping etc. it’s like a cover for a deeper feeling of discomfort. Xx
I was noticing recently that a lot of my tops are in the white to cream range. For me it's not an issue because a lot of the pants I wear are rather colorful. And this is the perfect color for them, in my opinion. So for reference, I have a lot of olive green pants and burgundy. Those happen to be some very different colors. But to me, cream is the ideal color for each of them. This makes putting together outfits effortless. I have my entire wardrobe catalogued on a digital wardrobe. The one I use is open wardrobe, and I love it! It makes it so much easier to see what I already have. And what is missing if I am out shopping. Even if i'm shopping online, I don't have to go dig through everything to figure it out. Really to me, it's a matter of preference. Having very similar pieces could be a huge help for somebody that doesn't really crave variety. Other people might get pretty bored. Another thing to consider is how often the person does laundry. This applies to the whole wardrobe.Of course, but it does matter depending on how often you need a specific top. I recently made the bold decision to start doing laundry only every two weeks! 😅 i had to buy more clothes because I wouldn't have been able to make it that long otherwise. It's just a time thing for me, and I would rather just do it all at once occasionally. Of course, if you are a minimalist, that wouldn't be acceptable.
It sounds like you have a preferred uniform/outfit formula that really works for you. I feel like this duplicate item thing is only a problem if you’re someone who craves versatility and gets bored super easily. For example, I recently got quite a few unique tops or multicoloured tops cos I realised I was feeling stagnant in my style BECAUSE most of my tops were solid colours or the same four silhouettes. So even though I was wearing something different, the end result felt similar enough that I was getting bored. Everyone is different and it’s kinda cool to see that 💕 also your style sounds lovely 😊
@@Eastlikesolace I totally agree and thank you 💖 I do have a more defined style now after a lot of work. I feel like it's a bit of a journey of self discovery, figuring out your own personal style. The thing is, that is kind of annoying, I guess is that we always keep changing 😄.
@@jessicacox2005 i usually aim for weekly with my laundry but sometimes it ends up being every 2 weeks. I think for certain items that need to be washed regularly having a couple of duplicates is great. like we wouldn’t only have one pair of socks for instance, and some tops need more washing than others. I guess I’m talking about items that don’t need as regular washing but we still duplicate those. Or even duplicates we don’t wear, because we’re wearing the original piece the most. Your items sound like they all have a place for you xx
Agree❤
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Do you buy duplicate items, and if so, why? ✨
Because i don't want my fave items to get worn out so fast.
@@kitkat9373 that’s a very valid point! In my case I think I’m going to wear my preferred sweater more anyway so it’s going to wear out the same, but I’ll just try to take care of it x
Adding a scarf or collar out of the crewneck would make it go even further.
100%! Although I find a collar under a jumper too preppy for my style, but definitely a great styling option if it works for you xx

The brown cardi looks a little tight on you, maybe next size up so there's no gap between the buttons
@@luluandmeow I like the fit as it is 😊
Love the long skinny scarves you wore in this video. Didn't like the long patterned cardigans or the oily-looking green trench. Loved the trainers with slouchy trousers look. Thank you Gemma
@@luluandmeow thanks lovely x
Heyy. Loved the video, since im also trying to do a no buy year. I was wondering if you could do a video about what you mentioned: it is still me, if i have new clothes or not. I think that I personally constantly chase the fantasy self by buying new clothes and changing "personal" style every year. Could you do a video about how to really know and love yourself without any external components? It would be so helpful ❤❤
Thanks lovely. This is a really interesting idea, which I can definitely cover!xx
nice outfits! i think the olive and black pants don’t work. black makes the brighter colors look off - a pant in the color of your blazer might work better - black is harder to style than people think. I also think having a purse that matches your hair color would be stunning. Black is not the only way ❤
@@Mimi-ni3il thank you! I personally love styling black with lighter tones but it’s not for everyone 😊
I like it!! With most capsule wardrobes I see the outfits looking too similar that it would seem like you're wearing the same thing everyday. But the clever way you use colour really makes each of these outfits look very different that you don't realize it's a capsule wardrobe.
@@oxford_phd thank you Hira ♥️ my capsule has gotten a lot more colourful over the years, but still sticking to a few key colours so it doesn’t get too hard to style xx
🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝
Where is your long brown short from? ❤
@@KayaTogo it’s actually a dress! I’ve linked it here: reurl.cc/NloE4x , and if you want to see more of it I have featured it in this video ua-cam.com/video/LhUx_8juo4k/v-deo.htmlsi=Aca5coNtl93HqcUD (plus there a discount code in that video if you’re interested in the dress) x
Shopping on one day per week (i.e. every weekend) would give you 85%...
I’m not saying I didn’t shop 90% of the time 😂 i just pulled a grade out of my head
How do you get food without shopping?
@@RichardBarclay this was clearly a no clothing shopping ban 🤪
@@gemmaamcleanoh lol that never occurred to me, I don't really buy clothes very often.
@@RichardBarclay haha I definitely couldn’t survive without food shopping 🤪 this was more of an non-essentials shopping ban. that’s great though, you obviously don’t have too much impulse too shop like a lot of us do
Love your videos! Could you please let me know who makes the leopard blazer. Thanks
Thanks love! It’s an old Mother of Pearl blazer xx
I tried no buy this year but realised how the idea of NO actually made it more tempting, limiting and caused more guilt. So next year I’m doing a ONLY BUY year and the few things there are items that will constantly need replacing, underwear, skincare. I also store all my clothes for all year together. Especially since in the U.K. it’s mostly Spring all year (mild, wet)
@@VBoo459 yeh I completely get that! I’ve failed no-buys before for that reason. I think shorter periods of time is probably less stressful for that reason. An only buy sounds like a great idea!!! Sounds super mindful and intentional which is really the aim of any of these experiments and challenges. Haha very true about UK weather 😂 xx
Good tips, thank you😊
Thank you ♥️
I sort my wardrobe two seasons at once because of the weather. I also shop for what ' I need not what I want'. I make a list & find I cross things off it. You've done well ❤😊

Hi, as this is not a 100% no buy video, can you show what you did buy? Also did you get free items from brands you were promoting ?
Hey! I don’t normally do haul kind of videos, so I didn’t feel it was worth sharing the items I bought. I did get items from brands as part of collaborations, which I spoke about in a few of my no buy videos x
Nice video. You should always aim for Fall collors, cuz you're noticably a Fall colortype!
@@juliet_burke thank you! I do try to, unless I fall in love with a colour like lilac which is definitely not in my usual colour palette. But sometimes it’s nice to just wear what you like, even if it’s not your “perfect” shade x
Welcome back (or welcome) to another video, I hope some of todays tips can be useful to help elevate your outfits without having to go shopping ❤ However, if you are looking to shop from Italo jewelry don’t forget to use my discount code 20GEMMA 💍 bit.ly/3NfQWoD
Perfect with the view: I’m at 90% and if I was a student, that’s a pretty good grade. Great way to look at it 😊
It’s not always about achieving 100% 😊
Thank you for this great video. I was wondering whether your collaborations affected your no-buy year and if yes, how? I mean if you get some clothes gifted or especially if you get to choose the items beforehand, if might feel like shopping to you and because of that it's easier not to shop your regular way. I would be very interested to hear about your thoughts on that. Thanks!
Great questions and I have mentioned this in some previous No buy videos. As it’s part of my job I obviously didn’t let it affect my “no-buy” as I also wasn’t shopping, but it’s true it can definitely scratch an itch to get new things into my wardrobe. However it wasn’t necessarily the same as impulse shopping or emotional shopping in my eyes. I know everyone could have a different view on this. But I agree it would have made my no-buy year easier in a way x
How itchy is it?
I think I mention this in the video but I don’t find it itchy, although I’m not very sensitive to wool in general. I don’t have to layer anything underneath and I don’t find it itchy to wear 😊
The average height for a woman globally is 5”3. 5”5 is not on the shorter side of average…it’s actually on the higher side of average, if not above average height. Just because most women in fashion are 5”8+ doesn’t mean that’s a representation of the actual general population 😂 sorry that’s so technical but 5”5 being called petite is simply not accurate
Congratulations!! Can't wait to see how the future unfolds! :)
Thanks Lindsey ♥️
I’m coming to the end of month 2 of a no-buy year. I love listening to your thoughts and reflections and I often write them down for myself and come back to them when I need motivation and perspective. Thanks so much!
Congratulations that’s great! Awh that’s so nice to hear, I’m glad my videos have been helpful for you xx
Well done, Gemma! I love this idea of seasonal no buys. It's sort of how I approach my wardrobe. I try to sew or refashion a garment each month so that takes care of a lot of my needs. I'm even working on a slouchy suede bag. But I will say that I think about fashion A LOT. It's so enjoyable! It sure makes it hard to resist the urge to buy. I'm thankful for you & the many other lovely slow fashion UA-camrs. I've learned lots of helpful strategies to evaluate what to bring in and when to take a pass.
Thank you Jacqueline ♥️ you know I thought I would utilize my sewing skills more in my no-buy and I’m sort of disappointed that I didn’t. Might be something for me to focus on this year in my sort of low-buy. It’s so hard to resist shopping sometimes, advertising does it’s job very well 😉
I’m starting my No Buy challenge this month. It’s a sort of warm-up, if you will, to having a full year of No Buy for 2025. I have a red light vs. green light list of what I’m allowed to purchase, with the green light being essentials or items to replace, and the red light being no jewelry, clothes, or makeup, for example. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and I’m feeling excited to join the challenge and see what I learn from this experience!
A warm up is a great idea!! Best of luck with your no-buy! I love the idea of the red light green light list! ♥️
Convince yourself to buy though?
Not sure what you mean by this question? 😊
🖤
I just wrapped up my first month of my no-buy. I’m having more fun than ever putting outfits together. I also realize just how much clothing, shoes and handbags I have. Pretty sure I could go for the next several years without needing to buy anything. For now the goal is to make it to the end of this year. I’m determined to prove to myself that I can do it.
Haha it’s funny when we really look at how much clothing we actually have! Best of luck with your no-buy! I’m sure you’ll do great 🙌🥳
