I had a 69 Ford Grand Torino Gt. Manual transmission, 3 on the steering column. I replaced the transmission for a 4 speed, replaced parts from the steering column to make it look original,matching with a Hurst shift stick ( 4 on the floor). That's how we used to call it. It was cool! Isn't it? I sold it in great condition for 750.00 dlls.cause I needed money to pay for the legal documentation for my beautiful wife. I still miss it,but I'm not repented because I love my wife! This coming May 11,2020, we'll be celebrating our 46th. Anniversary. Happy as the 1st. week of marriage!

Funny, when I saw the picture of the car in it's unrestored form, my mind quickly wandered back to a time when these 67 2 door Fords in Limegold were everywhere. While the Limegold was certainly rare on that particular engine optioned car, it was everywhere around here when I was a boy. A most popular colour without a doubt. Very nice example, makes me appreciate the 67 again, thanks for sharing.
I remember back when I owned a 66 Ford 2 door with a 289 in it, someone in my area had a 67 2 door like this in a dark green color with chrome wheels with baby moons and duals with glass packs and I went nuts over it. I wanted one so bad but I never got one. I love this body style.
He didn't check of 427. He got the standard 428. The restomod may have had a 427 though but even that wasn't ordered in the original which was a 428. 428 was standard for a 7 litre, whereas there were only 2 r code 7 litre cars

in 2008 Hot Rod magazine built an R code 427 side oiler, to stock specs using a modern grind Comp cam and a single quad, high rise intake. Wow that's awesome numbers...especially with single 4 barrel induction. Thats actually almost exactly the same horsepower number as what Ford rated the 427 SOHC with dual quads at. I think Ford rated the Cammer at 615 horsepower with a 4 barrel and 657 horsepower with dual quads if I remember right
If I had all the hours back I spent adjusting points and fine tuning the dwell I'd be a year younger ,at least, only true weak spot of older engines. ignition, and dont get me going on jetting, man, good times but kids today , well they could learn it . every day your car ran different.
Hear, hear. The 406s and 427s were temperamental beasts, to put it mildly. Even lighting one up was a bit of a chore, and you had to adjust the valves at least once a week.
@@xaenon so true , I used to care for a boat with a pair of 427's and I put a crane HI 2000 ignition add on to them which gave a longer spark and the transformation was amazing, they would start instantly and idle down to 400 rpm in gear at the dock. thankfully these had hydraulic valve lifters, i think .
The 67 Chrysler 440 was like that. Always messing with the carb and distributer. Like you said...ran different everyday. I wouldn't take anything for those memories.
1967 was the last year that the 427 was ever offered in a production car as they cost to much to make. they were still available over the counter as what they were a full on RACE ENGINE 500 HP PLUS.
Not quite accurate. The Mercury Cougar GT/E could be ordered with a 427 in 1968 but it was not the R code version. The W code version had a single 4 barrel carburetor and hydraulic lifters so it made less horsepower. After April 1968 it was replaced by the 428 Cobra Jet.
I gave one of those to my 71 year old mother. It replaced a 48 horse power 1963 triumph herald. My mother wasn't used to power brakes, and when she stomped down on the pedal, expecting to shift the clutch, she almost did the car on its front bumper. Ours was green on green on green, with the square plate on the trunk lid did either said interceptor, or police interceptor.

I almost bought 67 Fairlane that was sky blue metallic from an old lady when I was a kid and that original paint job was so spectacular my dad had a friend that had a 69 Fairlane that was also beautiful and glossy. Ford had the best glossiest paint jobs back then out of all the car companies. That's one thing I can say they did better than anyone else...
The tv series the invaders from 67-68 david vincent had a few cool 390 ford fairlanes and one episode I saw a 427 badge on a four door. Gotta look for it now to see what car it was. Quinn Martin production used Ford in most of their shows. Streets of San fran, Barnaby jones, cannon

When I was 16 a Sheriff gave me the r-code 67. I never got a job and my dad sold it for $100.00 He hated his family and knew I was poor as dirt with no job skills. He died a few years later. now I want one.
An LTD wasn't an XL. They were separate models in the '67 full size Ford lineup. The Galaxie 500, Custom 500, and Custom were all separate models as well.
Incorrect! They did do custom cars from the factory. The R-code 427 is special for 1 reason reason. It had to meet the NASCAR requirements. So only a few thousand were sold to the public. the car had to fit he template that the still use. Ground effects were were not an issue back then. And the 2 door is almost impossible to find.
bhaggen ... Unfortunately, you are mistaken. Hidden headlights were not available on the 1967 model. Both the LTD and the XL (different cars) had hidden headlights in 1968 and 1969. Bucket seats and console were options, not standard equipment.

Another interesting episode and eccentric original owner. Amazing it was a California car. Seems like putting hi-po engines in huge cars was more of a Midwestern thing. My uncle in Nebraska had a Chrysler Imperial back then and everyone in town considered it a "Muscle Car" because it had a 440 lol. It was slightly quicker than his tractor.
Actually, in 1967, I think the LTD was more of a 'mid-sized' car than a 'full sized' one...it was a SQUEEZE to fit 3-people width-wise into one of these cars...so in modern terms, it was a 'Taurus'...not a 'Crown Vic' in size. It's also not the first recorded 'sleeper' ever ordered from a factory, either. MANY people ordered Chevys and Darts with similar 'screaming performance' engines...in the hopes of snookering a 'small block striped-up shoe' into a race they would lose. Good money in doing this, in fact. (had a guy back in the 80's, got me to drop a 427 into a 1981 Chevy Monte Carlo for him...played HELL trying to find front springs that would carry that weight and fit those lower A-Arms...finally had to use 1972 big-block Camaro springs and have them 'cold-cut' to fit height-wise). He made a LOT of 'redlight cash' with that car, though...
Imperials were never designed to be impressive in the 1320 world.....they were designed to accomodate 5 humans ,a lot of their stuff, in utter safety and comfort whilst sailing along effortlessly at 80 plus mph .

When I seen this car it reminded me of a car I had and it hasn't been shown online as far as I know, it was a 1969 ford fairlane cobra R-code, not a fastback 428 scj 410 hp(factory rated 375 hp)side oiler,4 speed with drag pack 457 gear red line 5400 rpm at 110 mph top speed. Cobra badges front back sides and scj on the functional hood scoop,dark green. I'd love to see. One on line.
To me in 67, they finally got this body style right. I always thought the 65 and 66 were too boxy. I guess it was the design language of the time. In comparison the 65 and 66 Chevy were boxy too, compared to the 67.
without realizing why the open dif 3.50 gear in my 66 Mustang probably saved me lots of times from breaking the car loose in corners, least I had three wheels helping to aim the car the right way.
@@radioguy1620 Something you said reminded me of how many limited slip equipped "hot" cars of the day, ended up in junkyards due to spin-outs. Loss of lateral traction, especially during wet weather hard acceleration, left many a car with smashed trunk....Although, guess you could consider it a "safety" feature since it beat going head-on into a telephone pole!! :-)
@butchtropic You are right about a big block Galaxie vs. a GTO, I once owned both at the same time, the Galaxie had a big block 7 litre (not an R code), the GTO its 6.5 litre, both very close to stock with single 4V carbs. While the Goat with the Muncie would blow the Galaxie off the line, by the end of the quarter mile the big block Galaxie with the C6 trans and longer legs was overtaking the pumpjack. Top end on the Goat was 125 (when the valves began to float), but the Galaxie with the 3.0 gears on a good flat blacktop would go north of 140. Loved the GTO as it was the real head turner, but the Galaxie was the wolf in sheep's clothing.
I owned a 67 Ford Custom 500. Same body, cheaper everything. It had a 289 2bbl. DOG.. but it was economical and good driving. It was my first car I owned, given to me by my Uncle and Aunt. It was a dog, but it worked well overall.
there was no LTD XL ,, I own a 67 XL Q code 7 Litre (428) sports package with most options ,, owned her 37 1/2 years ,, my first car , Bought in Winnipeg , Manitoba, Canada. I was even a mechanic at the dealer it was ordered through , Dominion Motors
425 cubic inches (yes, it maths out to 425 cubic inches, despite the badge on the air cleaner), 11:1 compression, solid-tappet cam, dual quads. Cross-bolted mains and steel crank meant that engine could spin to 7000, possibly higher. I think it's fair to say they were putting out at least that 425 horsepower figure, and likely closer to the 500 hp range. And this was just the 'street' low riser heads. Bear in mind that Ford had medium-riser, high-riser, and tunnel-port versions of that engine. And of course, the king... the 427 SOHC, allegedly capable of eight grand on the tach, and 657 hp on the dyno. But that particular beastie never saw the light of a single lap at roundy-round, much less a factory option. If you wanted one for yourself, it came in a Holman-Moody crate at great expense. AND you had to know someone. The weird things at Ford were the 428s. The typical, Grandma-spec 428 'Thunderbird Special' was rated at 345 horsepower, with the police version spec'd at 360. And yet the 428 Cobra Jet, with better heads and intake, 'Fairlane GT' cam, 6,000 rpm capability, and exhaust that was a significant upgrade over the standard 428, was rated at ten horsepower LESS than the Grandma mill. The people who raced those things were pulling quarter mile times suggesting close to 450 hp. It's remarkable to think that once upon a time, stuff like this actually rolled on public roads. Even AMC got into act (at least a little) with their own 390s and 401s.
Me too. Always liked the 67-71 Plymouth GTX, which was a nicer car than a Roadrunner, and came standard with the 440 4bbl while the Roadrunners standard mill was the 383 4bbl. Always preferred Oldsmobile 442s and Buick Gran Sports to a Chevelle SS as well
My Dad bought a 68 LTD for a donor car. He took the 390 2bbl. out and rebuilt it, took the disk brakes off and power steering and put it on his 68 F100 pickup... Like the guy said, these all had open differential rear ends. That 390 2bbl. with 100,000 miles before rebuild, from a dead stop, burnt well over a quarter mile black mark through all the gears and about 50' in high gear. I would hate to see What this 427 monster would do, it'd most likely still be spinning...
A "posi" ... or "Equilok", as it was known in Ford ... wasn't available with the 427 back then, as it wouldn't hold up to the engine's torque output. The "Detroit Locker" ratcheting "differential" was an available option, but rather "severe" in its operation for "normal" street driving. 1968 saw the release of a more "high performance" capable limited-slip differential: the "Traction-Lok".
A friend of mine I grew up with had a 75 LTD with 351 cleveland but it was nothing like this lol, it was such a pos we hated turning it off because it was such a bitch to start back up. Before that he had a 68 Boneville with a 400 and that car hauled ass even though it was bigger then the LTD but that 335hp Pontiac 400 would get up and go my stepdad had a 67 Boneville with same engine and he always regreted selling it, he actually beat my uncles 70 RT Plum Crazy Challenger convertible with 383 and 4 speed. But that challenger is what made me fall in love with mopars its a shame some old lady ran into him at a redlight and totaled it.
What a fantastic, high optioned car. A Ford stereosonic tape system? Even before the 8-Track. But why in the world would he order all that power, with an open rear end? Scratch my head.

I know that guy that does the Hagerty videos found a 67 427 , 4 speed esquire wagon. Its a 1 of 1..he bought and drives it in the videos

They weren't selling the car, they were selling the engine and transmission.
To me in 67, they finally got this body style right. I always thought the 65 and 66 were too boxy. I guess it was the design language of the time. In comparison the 65 and 66 Chevy were boxy too, compared to the 67.
No tach, open diff, with one of the hottest motors Ford put in a car, kind of scary.
without realizing why the open dif 3.50 gear in my 66 Mustang probably saved me lots of times from breaking the car loose in corners, least I had three wheels helping to aim the car the right way.
Ridiculous.... all that motor & 4 speed with open rear...what a waste. On the street or track.
@@radioguy1620 Something you said reminded me of how many limited slip equipped "hot" cars of the day, ended up in junkyards due to spin-outs. Loss of lateral traction, especially during wet weather hard acceleration, left many a car with smashed trunk....Although, guess you could consider it a "safety" feature since it beat going head-on into a telephone pole!! :-)

@butchtropic You are right about a big block Galaxie vs. a GTO, I once owned both at the same time, the Galaxie had a big block 7 litre (not an R code), the GTO its 6.5 litre, both very close to stock with single 4V carbs. While the Goat with the Muncie would blow the Galaxie off the line, by the end of the quarter mile the big block Galaxie with the C6 trans and longer legs was overtaking the pumpjack. Top end on the Goat was 125 (when the valves began to float), but the Galaxie with the 3.0 gears on a good flat blacktop would go north of 140. Loved the GTO as it was the real head turner, but the Galaxie was the wolf in sheep's clothing.

I owned a 67 Ford Custom 500. Same body, cheaper everything. It had a 289 2bbl. DOG.. but it was economical and good driving. It was my first car I owned, given to me by my Uncle and Aunt. It was a dog, but it worked well overall.
The 2005 Mustang re introduced the shade of green this car wears. The modern basecoat/ clear coat version is called Legend Lime.
there was no LTD XL ,, I own a 67 XL Q code 7 Litre (428) sports package with most options ,, owned her 37 1/2 years ,, my first car , Bought in Winnipeg , Manitoba, Canada. I was even a mechanic at the dealer it was ordered through , Dominion Motors

dyno, my brother knew more about the dyno than the fucking instructor, back in 1974.
425 cubic inches (yes, it maths out to 425 cubic inches, despite the badge on the air cleaner), 11:1 compression, solid-tappet cam, dual quads. Cross-bolted mains and steel crank meant that engine could spin to 7000, possibly higher.
I think it's fair to say they were putting out at least that 425 horsepower figure, and likely closer to the 500 hp range. And this was just the 'street' low riser heads. Bear in mind that Ford had medium-riser, high-riser, and tunnel-port versions of that engine. And of course, the king... the 427 SOHC, allegedly capable of eight grand on the tach, and 657 hp on the dyno. But that particular beastie never saw the light of a single lap at roundy-round, much less a factory option. If you wanted one for yourself, it came in a Holman-Moody crate at great expense. AND you had to know someone.
The weird things at Ford were the 428s. The typical, Grandma-spec 428 'Thunderbird Special' was rated at 345 horsepower, with the police version spec'd at 360.
And yet the 428 Cobra Jet, with better heads and intake, 'Fairlane GT' cam, 6,000 rpm capability, and exhaust that was a significant upgrade over the standard 428, was rated at ten horsepower LESS than the Grandma mill. The people who raced those things were pulling quarter mile times suggesting close to 450 hp.
It's remarkable to think that once upon a time, stuff like this actually rolled on public roads. Even AMC got into act (at least a little) with their own 390s and 401s.

The executive style cars with performance packages are my favorites. Very few people, including the wife, knew what they were all about.
Me too. Always liked the 67-71 Plymouth GTX, which was a nicer car than a Roadrunner, and came standard with the 440 4bbl while the Roadrunners standard mill was the 383 4bbl. Always preferred Oldsmobile 442s and Buick Gran Sports to a Chevelle SS as well
My Dad bought a 68 LTD for a donor car. He took the 390 2bbl. out and rebuilt it, took the disk brakes off and power steering and put it on his 68 F100 pickup... Like the guy said, these all had open differential rear ends. That 390 2bbl. with 100,000 miles before rebuild, from a dead stop, burnt well over a quarter mile black mark through all the gears and about 50' in high gear. I would hate to see What this 427 monster would do, it'd most likely still be spinning...

I know this vid is a bit older. I noticed about 1:47 into it, I see a pool of oil on the intake between the the runners.

A "posi" ... or "Equilok", as it was known in Ford ... wasn't available with the 427 back then, as it wouldn't hold up to the engine's torque output. The "Detroit Locker" ratcheting "differential" was an available option, but rather "severe" in its operation for "normal" street driving. 1968 saw the release of a more "high performance" capable limited-slip differential: the "Traction-Lok".
I know someone in San Francisco that had a car like that in 1983 in black!
A friend of mine I grew up with had a 75 LTD with 351 cleveland but it was nothing like this lol, it was such a pos we hated turning it off because it was such a bitch to start back up. Before that he had a 68 Boneville with a 400 and that car hauled ass even though it was bigger then the LTD but that 335hp Pontiac 400 would get up and go my stepdad had a 67 Boneville with same engine and he always regreted selling it, he actually beat my uncles 70 RT Plum Crazy Challenger convertible with 383 and 4 speed. But that challenger is what made me fall in love with mopars its a shame some old lady ran into him at a redlight and totaled it.
