That was my grandparents car when I was little. Theres was light grey with that same interior and a automatic. It was a 427 dual 4 car as well. They sold it for $700 when I was 15. I was devastated. Dad was right though...I would have died in it. Incredible car, beautiful interior.
This is definitely one of the best super stock American cars of all time. 3600 lbs is not heavy for this car. In fact, it doesn't even weigh as much as some new Mustangs.
Just gorgeous. I'm a Mopar guy but I've always really liked those 427 Ford's...with the 63 1/2 R-Code Galaxie, 64 Fairlane Thunderbolt, and 66-67 R-Code Fairlane's being my favorites of the bunch

@@jamieseach8911 i’m sad to say since then...my step dad has sold it! it was such a cool car! but it’s ok he still kicks himself for getting rid of it too lol
Down here in Australia and New Zealand, our Unibody Falcons, Fairmonts, Fairlanes and LTD 351's often got optioned or repainted Stratosphere Grey and everything for the years from 70 to 79 pretty much copied the 66 Galaxie XL 500 style. It was the Redline 7000 car. Love me the R code...its the car we all aspire to!
Wow. That's the SECOND 66 XL that I've seen in that color.:) I painted my formerly Teal Blue//white interior 66 352/Auto XL in Merc. Coventry Grey in 1980. Of course. it wasn't a 427 R-Code or the factory color. I didn't even know That color was available in 1966.. I just liked .it because it looked stealthy. It fit the car.. This R-Code 66 is awesome.
Your description of how this looks and feels like a new car comes through even on video. The side oiler 427 was quite an engine at the time or even now for that matter. It's too bad they were around for just a few years no doubt due to government polution standards. Very nice interior with metal consol and other tasteful metallic touches throughout.
I love the full sized cars of the 60s and 70s. My first car was the family 1962 Galaxie coup. Even with the 2 speed automatic it was a great car to drive. I would love to have the 66 Ford featured in this video 👏
Thanks for posting this car. I own a 1966 Galaxie 500 XL Convertible with a 390 that I intend to restore as a daily driver, but I would love to get my hands on a Seven Litre Fastback to go with it. I love those cars, and they drive beautifully.
I bought a '66 Galaxie 500 convertible (302) as a daily driver in '73 and converted it to a 4 speed when the automatic went South the next year. Added 15 X 7 " wheels and G-60 tires and could hardly believe the difference in handling with no other changes.
Back in the day has a 69 Nova with the 396 350 hp, ran into two cars that blew my mind. One was a little blue 66 Nova with a 327 375 hp and a 66 Galaxie 427. Think it was the first time I ever saw 7 Liters on a side badge, wasn't sure what that was but found out fast it means faster than you ! Great times!
Always liked all the full size high performance cars of the 60s. The 63 1/2 R-Code 427 Galaxie is probably my favorite from Ford. Liked the full size Chevy's too. The 409 cars and the later 396 and 427 cars

I had a 66 XL 390 with a C6 transmission. The car would do neutral low-drops all day long. By 1976 the Ohio winters with snow and salt had eaten through the frame and it went to the crusher. My uncle had given me the car at 16 years old and I think I had it for 4 months tops before it went to the crusher with 37k miles on the clock.
Thanks, great overview of rare 1966 XL… I did buy a 1966 GALAXIE XL500/ 4 speed/352 / Burgandy BLACK INT/no Disc Brakes/ ps/ PBRAKES, in late 1967( had to get special Metallic Brakes / decent tires QUIK, & improve other parts)…. +Louise Sturm i ;had a 65 custom 500 and my father had a 66 mercury. 66 fords were strong enough to be unit bodys yet ford put a flexible frame beneath it to keep it quiet. but these frames would rust out after about ten years and break, at least in northeast ohio they did
Thanks for being honest regarding ACTUAL 1/4 mile times, yeah with some better traction might get into the 13's -- You know I wouldn't call a 350 ratio a drag ratio but if you intend to drive the car on the highway that's what you want not 456
+jim dandy 14 seconds at around 100 mph was a normal time for a bone stock big block muscle car in the 1960s. Some ran a little better, some ran a little worse. If you broke into the high 13's, you were doing really well. With tires, you could run high 13's reliably. There's so much hype and nonsense about the muscle car era. They were amazing cars back then, but they weren't particularly fast by todays standards.
+scdevon I am 60 now and back in the day I had a buddy who had a dead stock 70 SS chevelle with 331 gears and a 4 speed, he raced it one evening at the NH drag strip on Wed. 'Grudge night' and all he could get was HIGH 14's at 94, that was the 396 350 hp. I built a Yenko Camaro clone Camaro, 427/425 with 456 gears and a 4 speed, with a friends slicks in ran 12.7 at 110 and I had a junk holley 780, still needed traction 'slicks' to get into the 12's, someone who dragged at lot told me with a updated intake [Tarantula] and a 800/850 I should get low 12's . The old cars need to be remembered for their time in history not compared to newer hi-tech cars, however you didn't need a laptop to tune them
Jim Dandy, you are correct. The run-of-the-mill muscle car from say, '60s into the early 70s (not talking about the exotic, expensive ones), were not as fast as some people think. The technology today is far more advanced. Those cars from back then came from Detroit tuned down some for obvious reasons. If you were good at working on engines, you had to do some tweaking on those cars to get the most out of them. Distributor tuning, carb tuning such as trying different jetting, better exhaust system, etc. If you were really good, some head work on the ports, cam timing or a better cam etc, you could really wake them up. But out of the box off the dealer floor, they were still quick for that time, but they needed some tweaking.
The 7 Litre is similar, but powered by a 345 HP 428 rather than the 425 HP 427 side-oiler. The 7 Litres are very nice cars, they were quick, quiet, and smooth.
That door shut so smoothly, I'm sure the passenger side is equally nice. I was unaware the Galaxie 500 XL was still available in 66', that in itself is rare, considering the 7 Litre Galaxie 500 replaced it. Weird that both were available, I wonder if it was Canadian? This might be more rare than the 66' 7 Litre 427 convertible you've shown. Where are the glass headlight covers, you said that was strictly a 427 R code thing?
With a 3:90 or 4:10 year gear, slicks, it would drop to 12's I'd bet. Maybe faster with a professional Dyno tune. With today's products, I'd guess getting 700-800 HP wouldn't be out of the question. Then you'd hit 11's, tens maybe.
Jeff my 66 390 with bad cruise-o-matic would run 14.8 14.9 in 1/4mile so I'd bet the same thing scary fast side oilers in a 4000 lb car doing 12s saw one do it here in Tucson at Tucson dragway in the late 70's
410 hp for single 4 barrel and 425 hp for dual 4 barrel ( factory advertised ratings). Ford was always conservative with thier horsepower ratings compared to GM and Mopar .
I had a 66 xl 500 thunderbird special 390ci(6.3 litre (im guessing)) but cid was 390 back in 76 my first car that i brought with my own $$ 90.0 had a bad starter Loved the thunderbird interior and deep dark blue paint what memories😊 But it had the cruise-o-matic not a well designed transmission for the 390 I ended up putting in a c-6 mucho better
Great Galaxie, I didn't know this car existed. I thought that the '66 427 Galaxies all had the "7 Litre" package, with the 427 optioned instead of the 428.

Ford use this collor in Brazil for some cars: Ford Galaxie, Ford Del Rey, Ford Corcel II, Ford Belina, Ford Pampa and Ford Escort. I own a 1984 Ford Del Rey painted from factory with this collor.
My dads 66 390 over 120mph the headliner pulls down that what happened on the way to the hendrix concert in denver. They drove it to the floor all the way there. Taking turns driving he would wake up when he heard the valvetrain clattering from needed a quart of oil.

radioguy1620 - 98 Ford Escort is a great little car....mine was bought from the typical Granny w/21k on it. Mine has ice cold air, gets 30 mpg, and starts every time! What more can you ask for.? How about more comfortable seats? That’s about it! 😎

Check this link, it shows the color chart and the code for 1966 Mercury colors. paintref.com/cgi-bin/chipdisplay.cgi?year=1966&manuf=Ford&smodel=Mercury&info=&page=3
I noticed that it had the 45° down angle and 45° to the right angle exhaust tips. Those are not correct. That was something that the factory had a recall on because the original tips were too close to the bumper and they were discoloring the chrome.

Ford use this collor in Brazil for some cars: Ford Galaxie, Ford Del Rey, Ford Corcel II, Ford Belina, Ford Pampa and Ford Escort.
I own a 1984 Ford Del Rey painted from factory with this collor.
no mention of the cast iron headers.. would love to see this as XL package on a country squire..
There was I think one built. 428 4 speed Country Squire 1967. I believe it is in this collection.
My dads 66 390 over 120mph the headliner pulls down that what happened on the way to the hendrix concert in denver.
They drove it to the floor all the way there. Taking turns driving he would wake up when he heard the valvetrain clattering from needed a quart of oil.
390 comet. Summertime yellow keystone classics 4speed. Sold it for a new merc bobcat wagon in 74. Worst mistake of his life he said.
I liked your video, but very surprised not to hear that 427 start, or idling. All there was that 3 or 4 second take off. Whats up with that man?
I like to close my eyes and pretend Ron Swanson is talking about a Galaxie.
Mine had the 428 interceptor
My favorite car . I love these one only models. I have my streets largest collection of rust free. 98 ford escorts, two . for that matter probably the states biggest collection of rust free Ford Escorts. both so slow they are rolling roadblocks . but very shiny . .
radioguy1620 - 98 Ford Escort is a great little car....mine was bought from the typical Granny w/21k on it. Mine has ice cold air, gets 30 mpg, and starts every time! What more can you ask for.? How about more comfortable seats? That’s about it!
😎
@@mrdiplomat9018 4 years on ! One of mine has 380 K miles , still running. leaks oil but still with 40 mpg highway.
a guy down the road from me has one for sale with the original 427. $3500. Should i get it?
Olá amigo. é um prazer assistir seus belos videos. Sou brasileiro, e gostaria de saber se o Ford Galaxie do video esta a venda. Meu nome é Fabricio e sou mais um apaixonado pelo Ford Galaxie. Um grande abraço.
Looks like a standard brake master on the fire wall ??
Probably, the Government didn't require dual brake systems until 1967.
I have a 1965 galaxie 2 door and might be painting it and I want this color but I can't hear good so would anyone mind telling me what is the name of the color?
Bryant1939 It's called Coventry Gray, it's a Mercury color.
V8TV thank you so much. Sorry for the very late reply.
No problem!
V8TV would I just tell whoever is painting my car I want it coventry gray or would I need to tell them the year to or anything?
Check this link, it shows the color chart and the code for 1966 Mercury colors.

I had a 1971 LTD two door 460 Cobra Jet government issued only it was one bad car 160 on the speedometer
Fun fact, all the V8 motors at the time had the bones of a 427, just not as bulked
Why does it have dual rear antenna's?
Had one with a 390 and would scream
I noticed that it had the 45° down angle and 45° to the right angle exhaust tips. Those are not correct. That was something that the factory had a recall on because the original tips were too close to the bumper and they were discoloring the chrome.
