Well that's pretty cruel!
This guy gives free and very sound advice delivered with humour.
Keep doing what your doing Josh, please dont change you are my favourite UA-camr.
Thanks, Stephen! I know things have been a bit quieter on the channel recently - I'm trying to focus on quality of quantity, as this summer is mad busy for me - but I've got another video on the go as we speak!
The ear is indeed everything. All the learning material is just in service of finding building blocks and textures of expression. I don't think this can be overstated
Exactly this!
This is such good advice! The concept of "playing what you hear" can be a bit abstract and hard to understand in the beginning, but I thought your explanation was spot on. I've recently started practicing singing the root notes and chord tones over jazz standards, and man - it really does make a difference! It's so much easier to remember the chord progression when you know how it sounds in your head.
I wish I could have watched this video when I first got started playing, would have saved me from a lot of headache lol
Yeah it was definitely a concept I misunderstood for years - it turned out I wasn't hearing anything, I was just wiggling my fingers! Its great to hear you've started including singing in your practice, and seeing results! Keep it up!
thank you
It seems to me that enthusiasm and lack of fear (very different from confidence), are two of the most important things here.
I did once see and hear Oscar Peterson doing that play/vocalist thing, many years ago.
You are completely right. I'd forgotten you saw Oscar Peterson live!
Yes! That and remembering that we 'play' music. A sense of play is crucial.
What is the backing track of the First example?
It's one I put together myself for the video. If you want it, I'll put it up for download on my website
Interesting video. I think the title "cheap but good advice" implies maybe this is more surface level advice. As an improviser myself, I believe improvised music comes from the deepest parts of your soul--as if one were only a vessel/conduit and music is pouring through you. The jazz greats sometimes hint at the more supernal and spiritual aspect of music, as well as it being a conversation. These themes are probably too much for a beginning improviser, but I know you know this list is only the beginning.
I don't know what title you're referring to here? I agree that when you're performing it should feel like the music is flowing through you, but I'm a firm believer that that essentially comes from lots of practice, and then being relaxed, open-minded and keeping your ears open when performing.
@@joshwakeham it’s ok to have different beliefs about improvisation:)
Chick Corea’s list “for playing music in a group” the line above that on the document says “cheap but good advice” .. check out the image on a google search.
Looking forward to checking out rest of your content.
Oh I see! I didn't realise you were referring to that document! I see the title as saying "these are the basics you have to get comfortable with, but they are not everything you need to know" , as you say though, it's ok to have different views on this!
He should take it more easy and calm down to be more dynamic with his talking!
Hi Meter, I'm trying to improve with each video. Hopefully my more recent ones are more to your liking
Shame about the motormouthing!
You can slow the video down. Or just not watch it. Whining about free content is silly.
you play very bad
Thanks, really appreciate that
