I never heard of Daniel Gordis but I loved his logic and presentation for disagreeing with Beinart. I am glad that JBS is putting together these wonderful guests that provide the logic and reasoning for us jews as to how to think and be able to provide others with the current Jewish thought.
I'm a non Jew and have been to Israel. What diaspora Jews who go to Israel say is true. When you go there you are amazed at how a people who have gone through so much pain and suffering can rise up and build a prosperous and powerful country in such a troubled part of the world against all odds. I can't believe Peter Beinart would advocate and end to that.
Of course he would - because Leftists dislike prosperous and powerful countries! The fact that Israel was poor, weak, and on the verge of being annihilated in 1948 and yet has achieved so much - being by far the greatest success story in the history of states worldwide - does not endear it to the Left. The Left likes failed states where ethnic and religious minorities and homosexuals are persecuted, and civil rights are almost unheard of. The fact that Beinart is firmly on the side of a people which has not held elections for about 15 years, castigates the people that regularly holds elections, and proposes that the former overrun the latter demographically, tells you all you need to know.
You only have to go to Jerusalem or Hebron to see why that is. Just like white South Africans had great life outside of the town ships so do the Israelis outside the occupied
Hey Peter do you not know the name of Theodore Hertzel‘s book on Zionism? The book that started modern Zionism? It’s called Der Judenstaat. The Jewish State. Ignorance, or intellectual dishonesty?
Dr.Gordis - for me this is a masterly presentation.I suspect that you have inherited some genes from a ranking Litvish yeshiva with their unparalleled intellectual discussions ישר כחך מקב. לביא
I am waiting for Beinart's next great opus on the dissolution of the United States into a new country called America- Native Indian-Mexico- Eskimo land. Bit of a mouthful but Peter would no doubt think that would be a wonderful name that would right all wrongs, justly apportion all lands and make everyone feel happy in their progressive utopia.
Its been a long long time since I have heard such brilliant and erudite speaker about the necessity of an independent Jewish State. Thank you Dr. Gordis!
Sadly Peter Beinart ideas might find lots of enthusiastic supporters in many US universities. And I have a feeling he might not even get a Fail with some professors.
Dr Nathan Birenbaum was the real leader. Best would be to follow the movement that he stayed with in the end, after he abandoned the previous movements.
My wish for Peter Beinart is that he be forced to live in the Jewish state whose destruction he advocates - a right which the state which he proposes replace it would deny him. Prophets like Beinart are good at prophesying events that will never happen, but not so good at prophesying events that will happen.
Very good, glad to be introduced to this topic and article. This was so right on, thank you, Daniel, spot on! I'm on your side, Daniel, and I'm from America. 👋👋👋
Peter Beinart refused the invite. i am not surprised, He is intellectually dishonest on a regular basis, and he fears that he will be called out on it.
I read Peter Beinart's long essay in Jewish Currents several times and then listened to what Mr Gordis had to say in his interview with Mark Golub. Gordis is talking about a Jewish Democratic state. There is no such state. Israel as a Jewish state is democratic for Jews, but Jewish (i.e. not democratic) for its non-Jewish population. The Nation State Law confirms that. In the occupied territories the situation is much worse. Here there is open apartheid: one law (Israeli civil law) for the Jewish colonists and a different set of law (military law and military courts) for the Palestinians under occupation. All the hypocritical talk of a two state solution has only ever been used to expand the Zionist project on the ground and to dispossess the Palestinians, dunam after dunam. Gordis may take me for a fool, but I am very well aware of that many Israelis are in favour of the Palestinians disappearing, by hook or by crook, over the border. And this is happening by increment on the ground. Just look at the Jordan Valley. Peter Beinart clearly sees that the two state solution with genuine sovereignty for the Palestinian people is no longer possible. This state of affairs has been caused by Israel's greed for Palestinian territory. The situation right now in Israel/Palestine is that of a de facto one state solution with profound inequality between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs. Beinart has a vision, whilst Gordis simply lives in denial.
'Israel as a Jewish state is democratic for Jews, but Jewish (i.e. not democratic) for its non-Jewish population. The Nation State Law confirms that.' The Joint List, which is hostile to Israel, won 12.5 percent of the seats in the Knesset last year. The Nation State Law did not change that, or any other law in Israel. In [Judaea and Samaria] the situation is much worse. Here there is open apartheid: one law (Israeli civil law) for the Jewish colonists and a different set of law (military law and military courts) for the Palestinians under occupation.' There is one set of laws for all. The difference is that Israelis there (including some Arabs) have Israeli citizenship; the others formerly held Jordanian citizenship, which has been revoked. 'Peter Beinart clearly sees that the two state solution with genuine sovereignty for the Palestinian people is no longer possible. This state of affairs has been caused by Israel's greed for Palestinian territory.' Jews were expelled from Jenin, Nablus, and Tulkarem in 1929, but have never exercised their right to return there. They were expelled three times from the Gaza Strip: during the First World War, in 1929, and in 2005 (by Israel!) There is, historically, no such thing as 'Palestinian territory' except possibly for the territory of the Mandate, which includes Israel. 'The situation right now in Israel/Palestine is that of a de facto one state solution with profound inequality between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs.' No - it is not! Israelis used to be able to travel freely to Nablus and Ramallah. They cannot now. The Oslo Accord changed that. No Jews live in the Gaza Strip and they would risk being murdered if they tried to enter it. The fact that tens of thousands of rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel proves that there isn't one state and that there isn't an occupation of the Gaza Strip - because if there were, then the rockets couldn't have been fired. The Oslo accord and subsequent agreements, and the Garza strip withdrawal, mean that one state is further away than ever before.

The Islamic Republic of Iran. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia is governed on the basis of Islamic law. In fact, there are 57 Islamic states. Very easy to look up.
@@vladimirputindreadlockrast7725 The Gaza Strip is under Sharia law. According to its constitution, the Palestinian Authority is under Sharia law. Beinart appears not to have noticed these facts, nor the implication that his single state would also be under Sharia law.
There was a Jewish Kingdom of Israel three thousand years ago, a State of Judea under Roman occupation two thousand years ago, and a rebel Jewish state under Bar Kokhba in the second century AD. The religion of all those states was Israelite or Jewish. The difference between them and the modern state of Israel is that Israel has no official state religion - unlike the areas under Palestinian rule.

Beinart lives in NY. He should move to Sderot and send his kids to the IDF. Or shut up.
Beinard is pretty stupid guy
He really doesn't understand the reality in Israel. Pretty ignorant to my opinion. He should deal with his country US
He may have credentials but he lacks an understanding of the reality.
Mr. Golub is a class act.
Dr Nathan Birenbaum was the real leader. Best would be to follow the movement that he stayed with in the end, after he abandoned the previous movements.
Beinart is out of his mind. The two state arrangement is still possible, in spite of the lack of political will.

I thoroughly enjoyed Faultlines.
The guy is far left, do you think liberal news is going to care if Peter is honest or true or correct? They are manipulative, period.
Mark got old and looks frale. I like his way of working interviews.

Mark Golub did have Peter on L'Chaim. He pretty much said what was claimed in this video.
