You guys just don't understand, his comedy is just so creative and original and ground breaking... Which is why it is basically the same jokes that comedians have been telling since the 1950's and you could hear the exact same comedy routine for free if you hung out with a bunch of preteen or teen boys. And his response is just so brilliant, it definitely isn't the type of response you would hear from middle or high school boys.
Yeah let’s switch up the formula of our comedy so we can tell jokes that conform to the sensibilities of preteen or teen girls that think being neurodivergent is an aesthetic while suffering from borderline personality disorder.
He’s basically a pick me girl “I only hang out with guys”, “I hate social media 🥰”, “I hate girls, they r so much drama”, “I work so hard and I’m so nerdy” etc.
The real controversy is Netflix letting someone of this caliber get a special. Like it's fucked up. There has to be SOME barrier to entry. Gotta have ONE joke.
It’s a popularity contest, not a contest of skill. My personal example: Ali Wong. She has like 2-3 specials on Netflix, the contents of her jokes are rather basic and not revolutionary or new, she just says them in an animated way. If you’ve heard one joke from her; you’ve heard them all.
Be thankful to those who impose upon you a standard of how to do and be and say regardless of your own interpretation of your art. Women maybe need to think "Hey not everything is about and for me, maybe Matt wants to go back to his roots of having people like him for funny rather than telling my stripper what jokes he's allowed to tell" No wonder he rebeled against such a fickle and unappreciative fan base. Band wagon non comedy fans can go back to not liking comedy and ill like him just like I did when he was a snuggle toothed skinny kid on wild and out. WOMEN DIDNT DISCOVER HIM AND MAKE HIS CAREER HE WAS ALREADY DOING THAT. 😂 Pat yourselves on the back for his years of hard work and dictate how he can do his art even though yall just found him on an app. 🙄

We've been doing that since the pick up artists were born.... then after the MeToo took off and PUAs got put in jail... aspiring PUAs became part of these Tate-like misogyny MULM cults. Now they are crying that they are being oppressed because it is not accepted to be a misogynistic jerk by everyone else.
How is the world can you call Matt a misogynist? Based on what, that joke? That joke played with sexist ideas, but do you believe he hates women because he made a joke that played with sexist tropes of women should be good in kitchen or else they get hit? He didn’t even said he believe that in the joke, he said he thought that happened because he was in a sort of conservative state.

By far the funniest thing about Matt Rife is how bummed he is to not have a male audience. This man gets a Netflix special but to him it's meaningless without the boys.

Wild that they watched his content that did the same to other equally unfortunate things and people until it pertained to them. Which is far more than just disappointing. It’s Discusting. My dad went to see him perform a set near where we live, and he was super excited because he watched his videos on tik tok and thought he was HILARIOUS. I have never seen him so excited to go see a comedian before. And when he came back, he said it was so underwhelming and inappropriate. Those were the two words that he used to describe his set.
Hard agree. By the time that clip played of him calling himself handsome, I was grossed out by him. I wasn’t before only since I didn’t know who he was.

@@RazorRamonMachismo Hm... I don't know. The female comedians/cabaratiers in my country are beloved by men and women equally. And she certainly complains about men too in her shows. They just say; 'Haha, yeah, that sucks when men do that!' and continue watching the show. They're not offended by the truth. Brigitte Kaandorp is a good example. She did a sketch in the 90's, called Brigitte Kaandorp - Elsbeth Vliering (Chez Marcanti Plaza - 1995) She's supposed to play a Hippy-lady, loudly having discussions with her (colleague) manager on the stage, before ordering every unsuspecting audiencemember to sing along to her flabbergastingly weird medley, consisting of holidaysongs, oldfashioned ones, footballchants and nursery rhymes. The way she orders the crowd to join and they do, while being áll over the place (that is her act, exactly) is something she hasn't lost. She will make sure the audience listens and does what she says, no matter if she needs to lift her shirt to get their attention or spit into the crowd or whatever. She is still very popular, and not considered a controversial lady or someone that 'has harsh humor.' That'd be Sarah Kroos for example. As a big fan of dark and edgy humour, The golden rule is that the Joke needs to be funnier than it is offensive. The thing with Matt is that his joke wasn't really that funny, only offensive.
Omg I completely agree with this. As a woman who had an abusive father growing up I dont find it offensive, but i dont find it funny either. I love dark humor, I wouldn’t be in a good mental state without it. I find his apology way more funnier than the joke lol 😂
My biggest gripe with "edgy" humor is that it's often not edgy at all and played out. I saw a viral standup bit on Instagram where the comedian was talking about gay pride and said "Why do they need a whole parade just because they suck dick? You ladies give birth but don't get a parade!" and allllll the comments were talking about how nobody can talk like this without getting cancelled anymore and blah blah blah and I'm just like omfg this joke has been told TIRELESSLY since the 80's, if not earlier. I'm coming to find a lot of people don't care about the "humor," they just want an excuse to talk shit about people they don't like
Matt Rife has that “I think I’m attractive” look in his eye. If you look closely, you can see that look in some people’s gazes; celebrities, popular highschool boys; pretty much anyone like that.
Wait it gets better!!! A plastic surgeon made a vague post about making the best jawline ever just for his client to get cancelled. Matt Rife responded when he WASNT EVEN TAGGED! He literally exposed himself for having work done on his face I cant😂😂😂
IKR!!!! 😂 Not only that, he is the one who is going around and making fun of people who can't take his "dark humour" but he can't take a joke about his appearance (which wasn't even directed at him to begin with), and he's also blocking people and heavily moderating his comments section, on all his social media platforms, to ensure that no one can even sneak in a criticism.
for those wondering he responded "lying about medical history is illegal, just fyi..." (or something like that). And yes, he had not once been mentioned lmao
What makes his whole "women like me bc I´m hot" shtik even funnier is that he says he doesn´t like it, yet it´s making him significant profit. But what really gets me is that he´s had obvious plastic surgery and worked out to be more attractive. He complains about something he wanted and probably paid a lot for.
Yeah, it feels a lot like the...who were they again, the Prince family or something, those UA-cam people that got their own mansion the size of a Walmart built? Anyways, where they basically just complain about some random detail so they can "discreetly" flaunt their incredible wealth
Is the physically attractive version of Matt Rife in the room with us right now? Do you see him most after feeling despair or depression for long periods of time?
Can we make it clear that "conventally attractive people" are not necessarily attractive Like congrats you fit into the cookie cutter mold for what the average people like but that does not fit everyone's taste. I'm so glad he's getting trashed because he just gives normie to me like attractive where?? If a video game had to design a basic white male model character with no sense of uniqueness or special qualities yet wanted them to look alright it would be this guy just like normal spongebob when he got smoothed out and said only hi how are you yeah that's what he reminds me of

Most of the people defending this guy are forgetting one of the most simple rules of comedy. You should be laughing because it's funny, not because you agree.
The thing is, I do think dark humour is a skill that can be pulled off effectively. Comedians make "edgy" jokes all the time, and can often "get away with it" because it's understood by their delivery, persona, or who they are as a person off stage that it's not meant to be mean spirited. If they miss the mark, they either apologise or are just more skillful in how they write in future. Matt Rife, based on what he has said in podcasts and to others, does not value women and is not a particularly nice person. Not only that, but he did not deliver the jokes in a clever or funny way. He's not really that funny, and is mean spirited in what he says. That's why it's offensive- it's lazy, and is designed to be purely for shock value. He deserves to be cancelled not necessarily for the jokes themselves, but for how he delivered them, the way he wrote them, and for being blatantly attempting (as he himself says) to put his female audience members off. It's a big "fuck you" that he isn't funny enough or noteworthy enough to actually accomplish without it backfiring. He has not realised he hasn't put in the effort or the groundwork to pull that off. And talking for an hour about how you find vaginas disgusting is just fucking weird. He's always been like that, people are just seeing it for the first time.
Yess. The person has to seem relatively trustworthy in their character, which can take some time to build up. Obviously it's not just what is said at all, mainly it's who's saying it. The best comedians intentionally paint an attractive (in whatever way) persona behind/through everything they do. Matt clearly has some issues around how visually attractive he is, and thinks he can get good with this hot jock persona, or maybe he feels limited to that, who knows. Unfortunate; I had hoped for him when I first came across him. I do wonder what his next few years will be like though
Thank you so much for writing this. I see people in other comment threads defending his sexism by “comedy freedom”, and it’s kinda sad how well-meaning people fumbled in the explanation too.
Exactly, Bo burnham didnt start out with the energy of "swallow bitch! I agree! There was this one clip of him doing crowd work that went viral. He was joking about an autistic kid because he was interacting with that kid's mom in the crowd, and he did a good job there. Even the mom was genuinely laughing, and people who have autism and/or dealt with neurodivergent kids, both as parents and as professionals, chimed in the comments section to say that he joked about the situation well, keeping the sensitivity of the topic in mind. There, the butt of the joke wasn't autism or the kid, even though both were involved in the joke. Similarly, I believe that he could have made a genuinely good but dark joke about the waitress with the black eye without making DV the butt of the joke. But he's hell bent on proving that his comedy is for "da boyzz".
@NotVille_ Didn't look. If you have to tell people how good your stuff is, it's properly not that good. But keep at it and maybe it'll get there one day.
Her entire skit was funnier than any of the clips I've seen from his comedy special although I'm a little ashamed quite how much I chuckled at the bit where she pointed at the cat and said "look at this guy - what a pussy, right?!" 😅
I mean, that's not the best example since the unspoken intent would be aluding to something naughty (like a threesome), but I agree that he does have jokes where he misses the punch line for miles...and people still laugh. His crowd work is good tho.

Unpopular opinion: Chad Chad isn’t funny either 🤷♂️ This video is filled with humor similar to nicksnotgreen and ethanisonline. Which part of this video was funny?
@@Foniofinessewhy are you even here if you don't like those kinds videos/creators? Like you might be on the wrong side of youtube dude. Unless you came here looking for arguments. And if that's the case, that's just sad, man.
@@dentedavocado I’ve watched chad chad for years, and there’s no such thing as the “wrong side” when you don’t demonize people that think differently than you. The funny thing is, the ‘alpha male podcast’ is one of the better videos I’ve seen when it comes to humor. Not only that, she really put these insufferable misogynist in the spotlight. AND managed to get a shoutout from one of the most popular youtubers on the platform, MoistCritikal.
@@dentedavocado The other two comedians are total grifters. They bank on riling up the sensitive. Like when they formed a conspiracy and tried to cancel super mega on false sexual abuse accusations, only to turn on each other once they were outed.
That's reaching pretty hard. In reality all comedians are figuring out what works and doesn't work through trail and error. Its just that typically punching up or using self deprecating humor works the best or is much easier to pull off. And its not even about coping with anything. A comedians job is to gain attention and make people laugh, that's it. They often put on characters, make up stories, even tailor the way they talk, in order to do their job. So you're psychoanalyzing nothing but a character.
Ya this guy gave me the creeps ever since I saw one of his "comedy" tiktoks where it was just 10 minutes of him flirting with this woman, convinced her to give him her phone, scrolled through her texts with her daughter, then was going to scroll through her camera roll and when told no threatened her with "I'm gonna do it anyway unless you tell me what's in it" to which she had to say in front of the audience that she had explicit photos of herself in there and even after being told that was STILL debating if he should look at them despite him saying he wasn't going to.
The fact that the DV joke GAINED male fans is actually disturbing. But atleast their outing themselves- I know who to stay away from ;) Misogyny comes in this form all to often and men denying that it’s misogyny just shows how prevalent it is in society
It’s more-so his willingness to lose a fanbase that solely sexualizes him without caving in to scrutiny from people I’m certain have been to zero of his shows. Appreciating that doesn’t make you an abuser and to frame it that way is either bad faith or paranoia. I promise you, if you look hard enough for patterns, you will find them. The joke was mid, but get over it. It was a joke. If guys thought this guy beat women we would hate him too.
Honestly the discourse from this Netflix special was insane to me. I watched a video from another UA-camr who covered it and their comments were filled with people who were trying to be "not like other girls" about this. Comments about how they're a DV survivor and found the joke funny but not the special needs helmet joke, how people need to lighten up and learn that that is how people cope with traumatic situations, etc. But the thing is, I'm also a DV survivor who is still living with my abuser out of not having any other choice- I have to wait until I graduate and am able to move out of my own house in order to finally live under a different roof. His "joke" was extremely distasteful and just... Jesus Christ it was disgusting. Then his shitting on woman and their interests reeked of many societal problems we have today.
@@shinymetagross1666 Yeah but they would be able to understand why other people don't like him and not quick to defend him unless they wanted to be not like other girls.
Gross. I mean maybe they genuinely feel okay making a joke about their experience since it’s been a longer time but for those still in that situation, it’s just shitty and they should remember what it felt like. I was a big edgelord as a teenager and I still like some dark humor today, but it wasn’t even funny. The writing for Curb your enthusiasm and it’s always sunny have a lot of good examples of doing offensive comedy and dark humor in a way that doesn’t make it sound like it was written by some manosphere content- consuming freak.

John Mulaney’s most recent special, Baby J, is definitely what “dark” comedy should be. He made sometimes messed up and funny jokes about a dark time in HIS OWN life. He laughed at himself and used it as an opportunity to share *his* experiences with drug addiction and the recovery from it.
Would it be objectively and morally wrong if he was making fun of weird and crazy things and experiences that drug addicts have had if he wasn’t an addict himself?
@@tristenatro2045 not necessarily, but there is a fine line. a line which most of the “dark humor” comedians cross way to often. i’ll admit it does become tricky since that line is gonna be different for all sorts of people based on their own experiences. and of course it has to be funny. which matt rife just isn’t in my opinion.
Baby J had the one and only “cancel culture” joke i’ve found that isn’t terrible(“you want to cancel john mulaney? i’ll kill him”) he made it personal and based on his own experiences instead of rehashed “you can’t say anything now these days🙄”
I think the most important part of dark comedy is that people who have experienced that thing can laugh with the comedian (rather than the comedian just making fun of other people). As a big fan of dark and edgy humour,
The golden rule is that the Joke needs to be funnier than it is offensive.
The thing with Matt is that his joke wasn't really that funny, only offensive.
Exactly. The edgier the joke, the more well written it needs to be. Ha ha dv funny is not a good joke.
You mean, “ I don’t like that joke even though, I enjoy edgy humor. Therefore it is bad and offensive.”
@@yeetmeng7258Me when people find edgy comedy offensive :0

Yes, this is it.

Great comedians punch up because they use humor to cope with their damage. Bad comedians punch down because they are used to causing damage in others.
But atleast their outing themselves- I know who to stay away from ;)
Misogyny comes in this form all to often and men denying that it’s misogyny just shows how prevalent it is in society
Exactly, very well said. 👍
Because you people clearly don't understand comedy 😂

the bit about Matt hating gum because of his veneers was funnier than any joke he has ever uttered out of his mouth
I shall do the intro for you, dear Chad.
A TWEENGE OF CREENGE
matt rife should take notes, i be giggling when i watch your videos and "profit margarine" was just perfect
I don't really see the need to dismiss other's opinions as just being "not like the other girls" types. Not all dv survivors are going to think alike.
@@shinymetagross1666I mean if they simply disagreed that'd be fine but telling other DV survivors how they should and shouldn't react to the jokes/ridiculing them for being "too sensitive" gives not like the other girls energy.
@@shinymetagross1666 I agree with you and I also think a lot of ppl should stop being offended on behalf of others
This is completely off the video topic but as a new dog owner I can appreciate how well trained your dogs are while doing your skit. I was just thinking how my dogs would not just sit there lol

How's she going to do her bad green screen "jokes" on a stage?
I think it would be a little hard to transform her comedy style onto the stage... but maybe..

This is not how humour works. You CAN be funny about people who are not exactly you. As long as it’s FUNNY. If it’s not funny it’s just awful.
One of my favorite dark jokes is from Tig Notaro on her experience with breast cancer. It's the kind of thing that makes people feel cathartic despite everything they've gone through. It requires a level of understanding that Matt Rife just doesn't have.
All that's left for him to do now is get invited on Joe Rogan's podcast to whine about being canceled.
right 😂
Lol bitch you aint cancelling shit.

There was a respected plastic surgeon who said he was convinced without a doubt that Matt had some work done on his face. If that's true that's just the icing on the cake
