These guys weren't soldiers, at least to start. They were tellers, painters, mechanics, etc. But they sure as hell became soldiers when they went into battle. I know, my old man was one of them. Fought thru Normandy. Ended in Dec '45 with an Honorable Discharge that included medals.
Mine arrived right after D-Day as he was in the hospital not knowing if he'd be blind thanks to a live fire accident by another soldier when they shipped his squad out. As airborne, he stayed till after VE Day jumping at Remagen and other places. Then he came home to get ready for the Japan invasion he didn't think he'd survive when Truman gave the approval to drop the bomb. Invading Japan would have cost more lives than all we lost in both Europe and the Pacific combined. Tough call by Truman, but the right one.

Cheerful? Happy? NO! I cry every time I hear it! I saw the movie over 20 times and have the sountrack. Paul Anka's lyrics are anything but cheerful and happy. I am a veteran and will never forget June 6, 1944. Saving Private Ryan depicts the utter horror and brutality of that day in color. I am grateful The Longest Day was in black and white. It got the point across and I still see Red Buttons hanging from the church with the deafening bells ringing and the fear he felt that he would be spotted any second! All those young men slaughtered on Omaha Beach and the other beaches. To think, how many people will go to the beach tomorrow and not even know that June 6, 1944 was know as D-Day and signaled the start of the allies road to victory. May they all RIP and have our enduring gratitude.
The song and lyrics are upbeat and strong, courageous and determined. The theme is a victory march. The day was won despite overwhelming casualties. Imagine the courage it took for those men to step off the pontoons into a sea of blood from their comrades before them. They were a witness to the slaughter yet they still kept coming. I can't even imagine that kind of bravery. I don't even think it exists today. The Greatest Generation was truly the Greatest! God rest their souls and brave hearts.

What happened? The mental disorder of liberalism w/c makes people incapable of logical reasoning and critical thinking. The cure is turning to Jesus Christ, and conservatism.
David Villa What idiocy! Conservatism what conservatism? The nuttery they call conservatism these days has nothing to do with conserving anything. And Jesus would be repulsed by the asinine hateful crap that hides behind his name.
love this film for many reasons, but the best aspect imo is that it shows that the german commanders were smart skilled officers that were simply duped and led by a drug addict dictator that refused to see the writing on the wall.
In school there was a kid who obsessed with military vehicles and played this song, the Russian anthem, and MCR in study hall. He later changed schools for psychiatric evaluation. The kid was also known for picking fights and trying to harm others. Ironically that's how we became friends. One day in 6th grade, he challenged me to fight that barely lasted a minute as for one I did MMA at the time and two I was a few inches taller and had much more bulk (he was a twig and I was the tallest in the grade then). So later he kept on hitting me at times because "[I was] the only one who [fought] back," and we did it as a game to each other as I didn't know it as anything else than friendly rough housing (as I come from a family that does birthday punches). So every time I hear this song it reminds me of him.
Your no more special Than any other English speaking nation, such as Canada , the U.K. Or Australia - the only difference is you boast and shout and are ignorant about the rest of the work
Sure, keep thinking that.Answer the this, why does everybody from all over the world want to come to America?Where are you from?I'll bet it's some shit hole.
+Justin Henry I'm American too buddy, no need to self-glorify yourself like that. You go down that path, and you start thinking you are better than everyone else. Let's not use a slippery slope fallacy here, but I urge you to consider what many of the most powerful nations in the world, say Nazi Germany, did when they thought they could conquer the world.
+twiceisworst My point is that the he US has done more good for the world than any other countries combined. We give to charities ,liberate people from tyrants. Are we perfect? Not by along shot.Exceptional ..absolutely.
Justin Henry I think it is wishful thinking to think that the US has "done more good for the world than any [all] other country combined". What good has the United States done? Overthrown democratic governments and helped rebel groups establish dictatorships to support our interests economically? Killed many innocents in many countries in congressionally unauthorized bombings and attacks? The thing is Justin, and I don't want to be condescending when I say this; you don't know what you are talking about. Keep in mind that there is a DIFFERENCE between ignorance and stupidity; ignorance is not being informed of something, and ignorance is holding stupid or illogical opinions even AFTER you are informed of something. Under that, I call you ignorant, not stupid. If you really would like to go on with the argument, if you can call it that, that the US has done the most for the world than every other country combined, let's get some examples going here, and we can go from there. But I suggest you realize that we did not become a global superpower, and are not still a global superpower, because we were moral and nice to others. We displayed our ultimate power a long time ago to Russia, in a place called Japan, with two bombs.
I was fighting at the most terrible place of the invasion - the OMAHA BEACH - nine of ten of us lost their lifes - but we weren't heroes - we were 18 y. old youngsters - and in the landing boats approaching the coast - we suddenly had shit in our uniforms - but we ran for our lifes - only one of ten survived - and the next ten hours - nowadays no one can imagine what we have to bare - ...no, I don't describe what happened - no one would believe me - but from the 18 th July 44 I'm blind - ok ?
I think, like most people, that it's one of the all time great war flicks. Unfortunately I also hear that most veterans dislike it: The actors are too old and the battle scenes are historically inaccurate. Eisenhower himself walked out on it. Veterans prefer Private Ryan because it's realistic and factual. ' Hell with it . . I still prefer LD.
People from all over the world went to America and then fought to free Europe from tyranny - including Lebanon from where the composer Paul Anka originated. A composition worthy of this great endeavour. The orchestration here is superb.

On the 77th anniversary we still remember our heroes of d Day, 6/6/1944.
and on the 78th anniversary as well.
Both my Father and Uncle fought in the Burmese Front. Uncle, a Captain in the medical corps was captured by the Japanese and was MIA in the Singapore POW camps.
Amazing film, even with John Wayne in it playing the part of.......John Wayne.
unclemouldy1 Yep. John Wayne clobbered the Germans in Normandy. Why they never unleashed him on the Russians is beyond me.
John Wayne was an excellent war actor. Did anyone saw the fighting Seabees and The Sands of Iwo Jima?
John Wayne played ltc Benjamin vandervoort, Steve Forrest played cpt Harding, and Robert mitchum played bgen Norman cota
AR15SP1 , check Wikipedia for Eddie Albert’s military service.
Hey! Being John Wayne is difficult! Even the Duke found it hard when playing Genghis 'wayne' khan... 🤣🤣🤣
The first 24 hours of the invasion will decisive ,for us as well as the allies it will be THE LONGEST DAY. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.
this made me cry....
It actually has a rather sad lyrics though
Can you imagine what that day must have been like..literally these men upon reaching that far away shore were bombarded by bullets once they hit the shore..it must have felt like an impossible task..but they prevailed.
On Omaha beach, casualties of the first wave exceeded 85%. It was the most fortified section of Normandy. If Rommel had more time, …
Wow, this song reminds me of my days when I was in Grade 7. Thanks for uploading.
John has a long mustash, i reapet long john has a long mustash
Haha, there is nothing more terrifying than Sean Connery running out of a landing craft waving a bren gun shouting "We're taking it back ya' bastads!"
Lol crazy Irishmen lol
Thanks, Chechia. You and the rest of Visegrad have our back.
The Greatest Generation.
Lest we forget....Honours to the bravehearts that secured freedom.
God, thank you for D-Day. Allies, thank you for D-Day.
They live in the heart of all of us...""
" How many ships?!"... "All Of Them!!!"
This movie had big Hollywood stars...roles in the american forces the french free forces and the mixed uk armed forces..and our Canadian guy paul anka as a young American soldier.
Thank you for liberating Europe
This is incredible!!!!!!!!!
music by PAUL ANKA... esta grande música é do famoso PAUL ANKA.
The best realistic film on D DAY with a all star cast.
Damn Right! they were tough sonabitches back then, the world war 2 generation. My late father was in the "Big One" they called it back then. I had an uncle in Patton's third army fighting in Europe back then, ambushed a kraut patrol near a tank and massacred them all, and had gotten medals along with with his buddies. Another uncle was in North Africa chasing after General Rommel.
God bless America
We'll never forget
What a movie and what a song. Mind-blowing.
Cheap Bollywood musicians have copied it and made famous hindi song "Zindagi has ke bitayenge ... hum to 7 rang hai ....."
yes a great movie it kind of shows what our men went through.
Never forget what these many men sacrificed, or what they did it for.
so great
Created and sung by Paul Anka, a Canadian who had a small part in the movie
Many men are toy soldiers , we will play today ..... The Longest Day helped inspire many hours of play with my Marx toy soldiers in the mid 1960s
My friend Hassan's son Qassim was born on the 6th of June I get him a Birthday Cake every year, with GOLD, SWORD, JUNO, OMAH, & UTAH mapped out on it! When he comes over to my place if I'm a little slow getting the flag out. He commands, "Get My Flag Up!" He starts Kindergarten this year, I bet he's the only one that knows the phonetic alphabet.
His Father will have my condoleces...
Magnifique 🎉😢😂
J’avais 2 ans😊😊
My Uncle was on Omaha Beach. Another relatives plane carried in the gliders and Paratroopers.
beautiful
Cette musique est tellement épique.
Too hard to believe we didn't learn from the greatest generation in our history. Only to facing those who are selling us out for their own gain.
What ever happened to this type of attitude? The lets go get'em and clobber them until they surrender inconditionally attitude
+ian luetkehans The Cold War.
Those who did it talked of it.
What happened? The mental disorder of liberalism w/c makes people incapable of logical reasoning and critical thinking. The cure is turning to Jesus Christ, and conservatism.
Ironic considering what FDR was.
80th anniversary. Listening on a loop
My uncles wear in that war and boy the story's they told me and that was the Longest Day in History. One got frost bit on his tows .
80 years ago today
An Oktoberfest song popped into my head but don't know the name. I hear the similar song in German restaurant.
Americans are an exceptional people. We always will be.
Paul Anka of Lebanese Christian descent❤
A Canadian and had a role as a soldier in the movie.
Lebanese-Christians are a Nation.
Lost my father and two uncles that day
Did you recognize them in the movie?
My dad was a Seabee at Normandy.
"Dot-Dot-Dot-Dash, Dot-Dot-Dot-Dash"
Delta Fox I never realized it. V for victory!
"What's that?"
"That's the 'V' for vic'try sign, Dah-dah-dah-daaah, Hey, ain't you never heard Beethoven's Fif symphony?"
Morse code "V" - Victor!
My Uncle was on Omaha. And another relatives plane flew in the paratroopers.
I think, like most people, that it's one of the all time great war flicks.
Unfortunately I also hear that most veterans dislike it: The actors are too old and the battle scenes are historically inaccurate.
Eisenhower himself walked out on it.
Veterans prefer Private Ryan because it's
realistic and factual.
' Hell with it . . I still prefer LD.
Bella bella
82nd AIRBORNE!!!!! (cheers to the 101st)
My question is why they did not air the movie on that day last month
People from all over the world went to America and then fought to free Europe from tyranny - including Lebanon from where the composer Paul Anka originated. A composition worthy of this great endeavour. The orchestration here is superb.
This was the marchapst for the best regiment ever in the world....sadly dispanded after some fuck ups....The Canadian Airborne Regiment makes me cry
June 6, 1944. The world's longest day in the history of battles
Thing is "I do remember them" WO Rick Noland, WO Frank Melish....just a few killed in sep 2006
When you arrive in Colleville, you stop …...white cross ……..our heroes stay here
