No it didn't The Raiders bounced back with Gradkowski, went 8-8 back to back year with Hue Jackson and Tom Cable...firing Tom Cable set the Raiders back until Derek Carr got drafted In 2011, if I remember, the Raiders went 6-0 in the AFC West Jamarcus Russell did nothing damaging to the Raiders other than take money, no QB would've wemt there other than him and done any better especially with Al Davis not liking Kiffin and just doing Al Davis things
@PhilAndersonOutside No he wasnt. He was ranked number one. The raiders prime need was a qb. He just didnt work out for multiple reasons. Some were his own doing, but alot was the organizations doing. They put next to nothing around him and his OC sucked.
Huh??? Do you realize or remember what he walked into after being drafted? Probably the worst coach and OC the raiders ever had. Minus miller he had no weapons, and barely had a line. He checked out pretty quick mentally because of it. Contrast that to rookie QBs today... U think any of them would tolorate what he did until he checked out? Highly doubtful.
A hard truth...the raiders did a terrible job building around him. And when i say building, i mean a competent coaching staff, qb coach, trainers, etc. He was a reflection of how bad things had gotten at the time and to this day hes still the scapegoat for it. He had a part in it once he mentaly checked out but ANY qb wouldve.
Everyone rips on Kiper for calling Russell the next coming of Elway, but Russell definitely had massive potential if he actually cared and dedicated himself to football.
Im actually impressed. Two reasons why he failed: 1. The Raiders were terrible. No defense, no run game, and shitty recievers. 2. His own attitude. Rather than working on himself and his skills, he “balled out” and partied and relied on his God given talent on Sundays. Give Russel’s talents to a guy like Brady, and he would be a hall of famer
Jeremy B are you saying that’s a good run game? He had 0 rush yards Russell’s first year, 499 his 2nd year, and 357 in Russell’s last year in Oakland. That’s your definition of a good rushing game? Wow.
If only if he had a mentor to help him overcome his downfalls. It seemed everyone was on board when he did well, but when he was down everyone turned on him
I just want to pause the video at 1:28 And take a moment to point out the "No TD" because he didn't maintain possession going to the ground aka did not survive the ground. This is 2009 js
Yea, plenty of QB's suck in the NFL but he shot himself in the foot. I believe the Jets were going to sign him before the arrest. Al Davis most likely had a pvt detective watching him n called police on him.
It's so funny to me that Mike and Mike called a MNF game. I really didn't like their show but I actually think they did a great job on this broadcast together.
All things considered it's a bit surprising this guy never got a second chance. I mean, Ryan Leaf had all sorts of note-worthy character issues during his tenure and he at least had short stints with several teams
nolasludge him because that 30 mil was draft money which is handed out to #1 draft picks. There is no negotiating because it’s under the CBA. If it wasn’t his rookie contract then the agent and player could negotiate. That’s why there is less guaranteed money for draft picks now.
I love watching games like this. When QB's who later are labeled bust but have a few decent moments. It's my opinion but his throwing mechanics were subpar at best and with his work ethic and attitude he did it all to himself. Even if the Raiders were bad if he was dedicated and worked hard it would have shown and he wouldn't have been out of the league by 2010.
1:22 it shouldn’t matter if he lost possession when he went to the ground. He controlled it got two feet down he was in the end zone play over before he hit the ground
I was at this game and the one thing that stood out to me was after the touchdown to Louis Murphy gave the Raiders that late lead the entire team was up on the sidelines rooting on the defense for a stop, some were waving towels to encourage the fans, it was pandemonium but there was one guy sitting by himself on the bench. Jamarcus Russell. Not sitting with a coach, not looking at plays or warming up, not yelling encouragement to the fans or the defense, just sitting there all alone with his elbow on his helmet like he could’ve cared less. Never moved from his spot during the entire Charger winning drive. I’ll never forget that. That’s when I realized that this guy was never going to be worth a damn as a Raider. This guy is supposed to be our leader? No motivation or passion for the game whatsoever.
As a broncos fan, I watch this game and I seen the skills that he possess he just didn't apply his self to become that quarterback, which is sad waste of Talent.
The fact is that Jamarcus Russell just did not give a shit. He got the bag so he was good. It doesn’t matter who they put around him if he wasn’t willing to work at it
Iron Man Not sure if you saw any of videos on what was going on in his life like the deaths of his uncles. I understand your point, he was supposed to be a pro & didn’t work hard enough. I’m not talking about weapons on the field, just saying that for $57m I wish the Raiders had found a way to get someone to keep eyes on him because in reality he was alone & confused & didn’t have ppl around him to help him work his way into a pro QB. Instead he was just winging it & going home & probably playing video games & spending time with friends/family. Russell needed someone to basically babysit him & keep him in track. The perfect storm was coaches that didn’t want him so they let him fail while pursuing “win now,” & a team that didn’t function for many reasons. Sorry this is so long & yes, he took the big bag of money & didn’t do the work so you are correct but in the end it’s the Raiders that suffered & I wish they had done more so they wouldn’t. 😃
Funny everyone saying he is a waste and never lived up. He is an absolute success story in my opinion. The NFL doesn't care about you. Why kill your body for them? Russell got his money and dipped out. Smart man.
I think he could've been a great NFL quarterback if he applied himself. He had the talent. He had the size. He had a cannon for an arm. He just cared more about food and spending money from the massive contract he signed than football.
I don't care who doesn't like it, but Russell just needed to do more work and stop forcing the ball. I feel for him. People that doubt him probably never lost 2 really close friends/family members in a short period of time. It can attest that it will completely destroy your life, and career. Does he deserve a chance? sorta.. that rookie contract did him more dirty than his playing, but if he has his shit together he belongs on a practice squad or in the CFL.
Mike 34 agreed but I think the environment and the loose coaching also was a factor in his demise the talent was there give him the right coach I think he couldve been a lot better
The announcers was hating on this man...I watched a interview on how everyone wanted him to failed...I believe him...cause I've dealt with the same shit especially as a black man
amlnet49 And it was his debut. Before then it was Tony Cornheiser and anybody who wasn't busy that week. Regardless, they did a couple double header MNF with guest analysts and they were almost consistently horrible. ESPN commentators up to this point couldn't hold a candle to Al Michael's and Madden/Collinsworth.
Ken Stabler years were better, he took the Raiders to 5 consecutive AFC conference championship games and won a SuperBowl. They went to 10 AFC championship games in 12 years.

😂😂😂
Awesome
Rest in Peace
I remember back in these days.. getting a first down felt sooooooo amazing! 😭😂
He's the reason rookies now have a max-salary. He would (perhaps) have been good had they paid him less, but but he got his millions and cashed out.
Tbf they were talking about capping the rookie scale since the early 2000’s
I honestly feel like Jake Long was the final straw. The fact he was the highest paid OL before taking an NFL snap must’ve sent the owners overboard.
