12 Octave Fuzz Pedals (EQD, Keeley, Joyo, Beetronics, SolidGold, MXR, Caroline, EHX, Catalinbread)

- Twelve (alright, ten) octave fuzz pedals, directly compared with the same loop (from an Ammoon Stereo Looper - my EHX 720 has developed a fault so this cheap copy is standing in for it - recorded from my Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster).
Some of the loop is single notes above the 12th fret, required for traditional analog octave fuzz pedals. Some of it's chords and notes below the 12th, just to see how those track. Some pedals do better than others...
The pedals are, in order:

Since I found this video, fell in love with Shigeharu and listened to it over and over, so finally just pulled the trigger and order one))) Thanks man!!!
Fuzz pedals are most hard to choose things. My brain hurts :)
Just buy several 😂
Finally a pedal video with music🤔 I like the La machine🤤Thank you!
This is the best way I’ve seen to demo pedals and get quick comparisons! Good work 🤘🏼
Thanks!
@@ThePedalBored dude i got the joyo wich one your amp love the most ..? Wath amp you play in
Great riff too
I came for the pedals but I stayed for the riff!
Man, your channel its awesome!! And this octavers are so wierd hahaha love them all!!
Awesome comparison. This will save me some research time.
Nice man. I like both audio and visuals in your channel. Subbed!
More pressure on me to make more content. Dammit.
Very usefull video, I love it! (Thanks!)
I think the Joyo is a direct clone of the Fulltone Ultimate Octave. They share the same exact schematics. EXCEPT for the fact the guys at Joyo copied the schematic wrong and turned two caps by 180°. I know this stuff because I received my Joyo this morning and as soon as it came out of the box I modded it, turning those two caps in the right direction. Result: much better octave effect and thicker fuzz. That pedal is pure gold, and not only for its very low price. It is good, period.
I have the Joyo Voodoo Octave and the Fulltone Ultimate Octave they do not sound at all alike, perhaps after the mod it does but I have no way of testing

I think this thread contains info about the mod mentioned by OP above. Sounds pretty simple, though I've never modded a single pedal in my life. Look about halfway down for someone named Ian. I think this is exactly what he's talking about. :)
It is. IMO the pedal is kinda shrill without modding. ONCE modded, it's a completely different animal.
It sounds pretty good here for the price, got to check out the mod...
Well this means that these Joyo guys are stupid.
Awesome job, really digging your vids. Liking that Fuzz Master General the most I think. Additional points for Garth Marenghi
Mike Gormley Fun fact, I designed the cover of that DVD.
Wow!!!🍀 OMG Scotch Mist sorcery!
Super impressed. Anyone who likes brasseye and darkplace is chill...
Chill...
Chill.
Chill damn fella
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Beautifully executed, absolute no shit. Love the DVDs n'all too, based taste.
AL '87 Only the best of the comedy shows.
For some reason Fuzz Octaves always sound better when someone else is playing it. I am sucker for a good fuzz pedal though so I will keep exploring. Loved that HoofReaper. I sold off my Fuxx Fuzz, Octavix, MXR Blue Box, Angry Fuzz. POINT IS: This is another great video that gets me thinking about pedals and why I love them.
Nic Burrows That's what I think! Everyone else playing these pedals sounds good and I sound useless!
Electro Harmonix Octavix is the winner !!!
No way that 76 is way better than the rest it's treble is perfect
I have the fuzz meister general bit yours sounds much smoother and less velcro-y than mine. Also good job turning on all the switches on the Hoof Reaper!
ABSOLUTELY!!! - Oh my god, how I love this show!!! - And your vido, of course! ;o)
It’s vidayo!!
I am not sure about octave fuzz, but I like your DVD collection!
I prefer every one of those DVDs to every one of those octave fuzzes.
Hey bro , is that volume drop with the MXR blue box a deal breaker or do you still recommend the pedal ?
The Solid Gold is outstanding, as are most of their products. When and if I manage to get my hands on them, usually end up kicking something off the board. The Shingaru is right there, and Beetronics are always a player with Fuzzes.
The Ibanez unit it's based on is also nasty, nasty, nasty-
So many great Fuzzes out there now; cheap and cheerful? Joyo Voodoo Octave.
Very cool...Beetronics for me but I ended up with an Octaland mini Love your channel 'Scribed :)
I've got most of those DVDs - I found myself playing snap/swapsies... then the riff stopped... Now, where the hell was i!?
Oh, yes... OctaFuzz's!
I like them all
Missed the fulltone! Nice vídeo as always!
Oh hey, Knobs style presentation, that's cool!
Oh definitely. These multi-pedal demos were totally influenced both by Knobs and a specific video by Living Room Demos. I think I even say as much in the video description.
The Hoof Reaper (both sides together) made think : Jack White. Your riff helped with that, too. My favorite of all the examples. I agree with you, though, that while I like fuzz, others seem to be able to make it sound better than the few experiments I've tried so far, lol. Maybe I just need that Hoof Reaper...yeah, that's it.
Your comment made me go back and have another listen, which reminded me I was going for kind a Jack White vibe with the riff! So well spotted.
Compared to many others, the Hoof Reaper is pretty restrained.Don't think Jack would approve.
The Pigtronix Octava looks like a good one!
Analog fuzz pedals. I'm dying 😂😂😂
Sub'd!
EQD fuzz Master general..❤👍👍
Lol, the Perseus just kinda dipped the fuck out right there at the end.
I own the Fuzzmaster General, so I'm happy to see it in a video.
good channel
Thanks!
It's SHIGEHARU not SHINGARU!! Sorry everyone. My mistake.
Also someone on Reddit tells me that the Joyo Voodoo Octave is actually based on the Foxx Tone Machine, like the Keeley Wolff.
If I'm not mistaken, the MXR La Machine is also based on the Tone Machine. :)
Great video as always!
Did you use any specific settings on your katana? I just got my Shigeharu and own a katana too, but during a couple hours couldn't dial in THIS tone and it's killing me =( just noticed that the result is a little closer with humbucker output.
The Joyo isn't just based on the Foxx Tone Machine, it's a near exact copy. The differences are two capacitors were wired in the wrong way on some pedals, two capacitors had their positions swapped the position, and the midcut switch isn't present on the original. It's apparently fairly easy to mod them back into an actual Tone Machine since you don't need any parts.
best fuzz vid ever!! Thank you!!!!!!
Jajajajajaa🖕
I owns a JoJo voodoo octave. Can you please share mod's schematic and some picture of wich caps you talk about? Thanx a lot.
I do as well. Two of them in fact. One for bass, one for reg. Both of them were apparently wired wrong so the octaver is practically worthless but damn the fuzz is pretty amazing for a sub $50 pedal. Compared to my BigMuff at least.
Shigeharu is such a rad pedal.
Solid gold 76 for me it's even a great fuzz pedal by itself
Extra points for the Garth Marenghi's Darkplace DVD.
Love me some Chris Morris!
Always love ya vids.
I got one of these... Okay maybe two.
Alri g t t... F ou r...
I always wondered what the MXR La Machine was!
Well, I used to ponder buying the Joyo if it ever went below $30 (Canadian), but not anymore. It sounded so limp compared to the rest. The Hoof Reaper is awesome.
You be lucky to get that for 30$
They all pretty much sound the same to me, any Octavia pedal that is really different and has a lot of more options?
Where is Fender Blender?! :)
Cool video. But I don't think one can simply decide what a pedal sounds like without toggling the knobs etc. to find the sound(s) you are looking for. They all respond different to different guitars, amps, signal chains etc... Cool video though!
catterick too? my mans got rare tastes!
Some really nice and some really nasty sounds here...I think I like thick warm simple fuzz face sounds
12 Golden Country Greats
Strange, I have subbed, but this video had make me questioning if I truly want a fuzz/octaver.
It seems that not one sounds like I wanted them to.
The videos and presentation are amazing. If I'm looking at a pedal, the first thing I do is come to this channel. What I've found after watching this video is that I am not a fuzz kinda guy.
I need tab for this riff so I can replicate the same with my Octave Fuzzes to compare them :D
what type of transister of joyo
TOP⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Please do a Tube Screamer shootout next (Preferably into an already overdriven amp, like a dirty Marshall JCM800)
With pedals like the: Ibanez TS808, Ibanez TS808HW, Ibanez TS9, Maxon OD808, Maxon OD9, Wampler Clarksdale, Keeley Red Dirt, Fulltone Fulldrive 2 & 3, Way Huge Green Rhino, EHX East River Drive, KHDK Ghoul Screamer, Mooer Green Mile, JHS Moonshine, Jam Pedals TubeDreamer, MXR GT-OD, and the BOSS SD-1w, MXR ZW44 & Fulltone OCD for the odd-balls.
Roy Buis I would, but I'm not a huge fan of Tube Screamers - I only own a EQD Dunes. So I'd have to buy all the others and sadly, no bottomless bank account 🙂
Also I kind of think they all sound basically the same...
Wait you own all these pedals? I thought you just borrowed them from a store to make these videos and then brought them back haha
Roy Buis I buy them from stores. Some I return if I can, others I resell.
I miss the Beetronics Octahive
Did you have one and give it away? You can just buy it again. Go on.
i'd say between the fuzz master general and the shigeharu, imo
Everything but versatile. Am I wrong? I have a MXR Blue Box, but I'm thinking about selling it and buying normal fuzz. What do you think?
Yes. I don’t get it.
Ya don’t do that.
Y U NO DUNLOP OCTAVIO?!
Fulltone octafuzz is missing....
Most (if not all) of these 'Octave up' pedals are generally for single note application. Sounding like shit when in octave up while striking chords. The Electro-Harmonix and Joyo are the most versatile and best sounding, IMO.
Bzz Bzz!
Beetronics FX What the hell?!
What was it... "the SWARM" at NAMM, THAT SHIT WAS AMAZING! When dat on the market?
Buy an analog fox superfuzz, just because they are awsome :)
there's no effect I have more apathy towards than octave-up fuzz. it just doesn't do it for me in any conceivable way. which is strange, considering I'm a big fan of sub-octave stuff.
Seems to me that the Hoof Reaper is the best for this particular loop. Try other guitars, playing styles, amps --- another pedal you demo'ed would be better. Change the room and temperature and humidity --- and some of the pedals suddenly sound completely different. I don't really get octave fuzz pedals either but I am just a drummer. xD Oh yeah .... Purple Haze ... hey! *My* name is Haze! Maybe I *DO* get octave fuzz pedals! (no .. I do not)
classic comedy DVD selection tbh
CORRECT!
You really need to try a Behringer Super Fuzz. $25 and the truth!
great 1:1 clone of the Boss FZ-2. Overall really versatile thanks to its 3 modes. Love mine.
It's cool but it's not an octave fuzz.
@@thejasonblackburn It's not a classic Octavia-style octave fuzz, but it has a pretty clear upper octave if you dial back the treble on your guitar, and a distinct octave clang if you don't. It's got the same lineage as the Solidgold 76 or the Fuzzmaster General in this video, just another generation removed. They are all descendants of the Shin-Ei Super Fuzz. It's pretty easy to approximate old-school Shin-Ei tones on an SF-300. The Shin-Ei is the original Japanese octave fuzz. The Ibanez Standard Fuzz (Solidgold 76) and the Ace Tone Fuzz (Fuzzmaster General) were variants of this design. The Boss Hyper Fuzz (Behringer Super Fuzz) was a later variant with additional tone-shaping options.
The Behringer Super Fuzz most definitely has an octave fuzz feature even though it isn't an actual mode selection...best all around fuzz for the $$
SG 76
Absolutely.SG, period,- great designs.
definitley not the perseus, that sounds like a hornet with a serious case of wind
Hey man, wanna sell your orange hoof reaper? Lol, I want that version of it.
Where the OG octafuzz
do not adjust your set is pretty good, i had a dvd with the not the 1948 show on it too!
included at the end! great taste in dvd's sir! i'm now going to check out that rik mayall thing you showed!
I thought they all sounded terrible. I don't know if it was the initial loop, but they sounded shrill and grating.
Good video format though.
Steven Morton I think Octave Fuzz is SUCH a divisive sound. You really have to love it, and I'm not sure I do...
I was pretty sure the 76 from solidgoldfx is based off of the Super Fuzz. Either way, I have one and it sounds ace!
Your right, it's the Standard Fuzz
Hoof Reaper
That Persius (spelling it wrong I'm sure) sounded awful! lol
I think he did a a pretty poor representation of that pedal
The Perseus is a bit different, actually distinct and quite nice. Can see where it wouldn't represent well without some knob twiddling.Have to try it yourself.
Of course chords don't work octaves below, the frequencies of the notes are too close to each other...
A number of them do handle it pretty well though, which is why I thought it worth trying.
Try to record, let's say, an A0 with a C#1 in the context of a song and see if they cut through the mix then...
really good demo, unfortunately they all sounded shit to me 🤣 i think octavia style pedals only work well when stacked with a regular fuzz pedal or heavy overdrive like Hendrix used to do.
Looks like Satriani it's the only man that can make this little boy sounds nice.
Ricky de Camargo Ha! Yes, I think you’re probably right. Although Jack White gives it a good go.
@@ThePedalBored for sure. Probably I will take one of these because of your video. Thanks man.
as far as i can tell the trick is to blend it with a fuzz pedal or distortion, these kind of octave fuzz pedals dont seem to sound good straight into a clean amp on their own.
soo many choices so little money..
Great concept, but fuzz needs a tube amp to shine.
I hear this a lot, but I think I disagree. I own a tonne of fuzzes and they all sound great through my Katana.
I just did a demo of the Gokko Octave Fuzz through a 1980 Yamaha G100 solid state amp and I think it sounded pretty good.
the bluebox is monophonic of course it has poor chord tracking
Yeah...Octave fuzz isn’t for me
descobri pq odeio fuzz, o efeito é feio em qualquer marca kkk
We’re you trying to make them all sound terrible??
This is how pedal demos reviews need to be Made.. great job
Not always. I like it when a second person is adjusting the knobs in real time to show us how to dial it in for different sounds. A loop with captions is a bit monotonous imo. Sometimes the format works great.
@@bruhdamartinasty3636 no one cares what You think
