As a kid, we would hike the Rubicon trail about 1/2 mile and walk straight down the cliff to some really deep spots. Hang out on the lake and catch rainbows and big Macks. I bet I have a picture of our exact spot if you want it.
I am not looking for Nasty! Man the wind can make it very nasty! You got the kick back time and a nice trout! Lake fishing this year has been - well just difficult!
I fish some Reservoirs around Vancouver BC , but found if I go on the bottom I get snagged up on stumps, So I end up using floats mostly except a couple of places I know I never get snagged ,
No, the gate is locked at the entrance but it's stacked periodically along that road from the entrance down to the end of the campground. Tons of it. My camera was on a stack of it about 20 yards from where I was parked just over the small hill to the right of me. This is emerald Bay State park so I don't know what the rules on that would be but I can't see anyone raising a fuss.
@@wildernesswithamani1027 thanks brother! Btw check out Lobdell lake asap! I caught too many fish to count today to include the most beautiful spawn phase brook!! Was such and amazing day.
7 count isn't very deep if it's sinking at a rate of about a foot to a foot and a half per second. I prefer to have at least a 20 count when I cast out far because I can always cast closer to try shallower water to search out fish. When the deepest point is a 7 count then it comes down to either the fish being there or not. I want a few more options than that.
I was looking down the barrel of getting skunked after a really long hike and breaking through some nasty patches of manzanita. This bite, and the one I got when I finished fighting this fish, was the only action I got all day. I'll take it!
@@wildernesswithamani1027 I've been there bro, your a great fisherman, thx for sharing, question were do you get those mariboo trout gigs if you don't mind, thank you
Hello Amani, changing spots was the right move, that was one nice rainbow, you almost had another one, hope you enjoyed your meal, catch you next time👍👊🎣
This spot was kind of where I ended up. It was close to the entrance to Emerald Bay but I just couldn't reach deep enough water there with the lake level so high. This spot was pretty good looking but it was a lot of hiking and breaking through bushes to get down there. Next time, I'll be laying on the sand and fishing the deeper water on the other side of the Bay!
Personally, I wouldn't use it because you would only feel the biggest trout and probably not much at that. I use a 5' ultralight because I'm into a fierce battle but I think a 6' or 7' rod would be fine. It would give you more leverage to keep the fish out of the boulders. Me, I like to feel like I might lose a big trout at any moment from the time I first set the hook using my tiny rod! That's why I'm always holding it over my head to try to keep the fish out of the rocks!
I use the yellow/green /orange swirl original scent stuff. I have clips for powerbait, hooks, rigging up, lure types, etc on my fishing tips playlist for the hundreds of fishing videos I have across my channel playlists.
No, that treble never seems to make it far into their mouth and at size 18 I can just pop it out if I want to let them go. I go out there for one or two good rainbows to eat but, as you could see in several videos on my lake Tahoe fishing playlist, I let a lot of fish go that I can do so safely because I barely have them. I fish barbless when I'm using artificial lures and have no intent on keeping anything. Mostly rivers and backcountry fishing.
What a nice rainbow Amani! I fished at Chimney beach and Sand Harbor a couple weeks ago, I have yet to even get a bite. I would love to continue fishing Tahoe but 0 bites makes me think I am doing something wrong. I even use your "Rigging up for reservoir trout" video! I hope to catch a good one like you one day!
The temperatures are dropping so I think the fishing should start to pick up. Continue fishing! Never give up! I was one bite away from getting skunked here myself!
That fish was delicious! I haven't talked to him since I handed him the fillets but my neighbor could surely vouch for that as well. Got 3 meals off of that fish.
Yeah, that thing was battling. It always gets tense when you can see how nice the fish is and you know that tiny size 18 hook is all you got holding that fish on. I do like the tiny 18 treble hooks because it allows me to let a lot of the lightly hooked fish go when I have enough or think I might get more.
I wonder if you are going to fish that lake where you were catching Lahantans in wide open bite thru the ice, before the ice. I wonder if they all grew up a couple more inches.
I was thinking about it. Right now I'm running out of time to fish everything I want to fish before the snow falls. It's cold in the mountains and the first dusting of snow is already visible in the higher country. It might happen.
That thing was running up and down the shore. You know as well as I do, one wrong move on a fish like that on ultralight tackle and you are done! That was some good eating.
The lake is there and the temperatures are dropping so I say give it a try if you have the time. I never fished Tahoe until I started this channel and moved to Reno. Fished all around it all my life but for some reason I always assumed you needed a boat for some reason. That's why we have to try things out I guess.
I would say yes to the diet being a determining factor. Maybe cold water has something to do with it. Even when you get holdover hatchery fish in the winter the meat has usually turned some shade of pink.
I thought the same thing for decades. I fished all around it but never in the Lake itself. I tried it for the first time a few years ago when My channel was new. Now I have a few dozen videos Tahoe shore fishing playlist. That playlist will keep growing this Winter. Last Winter was out of control so hopefully we get something a little lighter than that this year.
That was a beautiful rainbow. It will give you a couple of nice fillets. It must be the diet that turns the meat different shades. I've caught rainbows out of Crowley Lake and the meat is bright red.
I got 3 meals worth out of it. Gave one to my neighbor and ate one last night. Awesome tasting. The meat on these rainbows looks a lot like salmon before and after you cook it. They are top notch as far as I am concerned. Lake Almanor is a place I want to fish sooner rather than later.
I lived in Almanor for a few winters, the Hamilton branch that feeds the lake you would enjoy. I caught 2 out of my float tube about the length as the one you caught here. Check it out! Looking forward to the Almanor video.
I have a couple of clips on my river fishing playlist from the Hamilton Branch from a few years ago right before they shortened the Season. I've hit big rainbows in there since I was in high school back in the late 80's. @@jeeperguy4290
I fixed the tip and changed my line shortly after I got home from that trip! I actually didn't have that rod because the reel has 6lb test and I like 8lb mono for this lake because of the boulders. I was using the 5'6" rod I got at a yard sale and a really old Ugly Stik I bought many years ago that was 4'8" but is now around 4'7" after a couple of tip replacements. I want to get another 5'6" Ugly Stik to use for Tahoe but it isn't in the budget right now. I am using the 4'7" rod now to replace the 5' rod I snapped a while back. It's not ideal but as you can see, I can get by with it!
If you go to my variety clip playlist, my clip "sweet lemon pepper trout" is basically how I cook fish out in the field and at home. I also have clips on there for grilling fish on a fire and baking fish but frying them up is my go to. I like the skin on rainbows when it gets crispy!
I have a few clips on my Lake Tahoe shore fishing playlist for my channel where I fish in the Summer. I get fish but I haven't hit the bigger trout with consistency like I do when it's cold. Once you get down to the water in most spots I fish in the clips on my Tahoe fishing playlist, you only see people paddling by in kayaks. Even when the roads are lined with parked cars no one is down climbing around on those giant boulders! I would never go to Emerald Bay to fish in the Summer because with the campgrounds open that place is a zoo. I mostly am hiking and fishing in the backcountry in the Summer. I'm always looking to expand the options on my backcountry hiking and fishing playlists and there is a tight window to get that done.
Why must you raise your rig so high when reeling in the fish? Advantages/disadvantages? Or is that just a “look at me, I got a fish on” attention grabber? Your neighbors must not appreciate your volume
I mainly do it to keep the fish out of the crazy boulder hazards everywhere under the water. There were some submerged logs I could see out there as well. It also helps to keep the fish out of trouble spots on the ultra light tackle I use. I usually use my 5' or 5'6" rods but the one I got this fish on is only about 4'7" after a few tip replacements. It was 4'8" when I bought it. I'm only using this tiny rod for lake Tahoe because it's replacing a 5' rod I snapped. I like the challenge of battling larger trout on ultra light tackle whether I'm in lakes or rivers. Larger rod would be way easier to land these large fish in a boulder environment but I'm looking for a nail biting battle, not easy. That's how I have always fished beyond my days as a kid.
Thanks for the video. It was a beautiful fish. Enjoy your meals.
I enjoyed a meal last night and it was awesome. I gave some to my neighbor but I still have enough for one more meal tonight.
Great Catch Fairwinds!
Thanks. I was doubting everything right up until I got that fish. The only thing I caught before this fish was a quality nap!

It's near Rooster Rock. There and just north of Rooster rock by 100 yds
Yeah, that fish fought great and tasted just as good. Those Lake Tahoe rainbows always battle.

Yeah, that thing was battling. Such good eating to top it all off. I'm heading back to that lake soon.

Thanks. It was a little shaky on the catching part right up until I got that fish. Better late than never!
7 count is how deep? Seems 30 feet is deeper than many trout lakes.

It's true, I was sleeping in that dirt just like a hog! There aren't any beds available out there. Sometimes I have to roll with a rock as a pillow!

Thanks for the videos Amani! Why is the meat on the rainbows red like salmon instead of white? Their diet?
I think wild fish in California usually have red meat. I think they feed on shrimp and crayfish.
I would say yes to the diet being a determining factor. Maybe cold water has something to do with it. Even when you get holdover hatchery fish in the winter the meat has usually turned some shade of pink.
