I really don’t know of a better performance of Mendelssohn No. 3 (actually his last symphony) than this one. Masur was a great man and a great musician who is sorely missed.
Kurt Masur will always be one of the greatest! And Mendelssonh is huge off course!! Thank you for this recording
Giant Mendelssohn! No doubt, among the 18 symphonies composed by this Genius Hamburg son ( 13 string symphonies plus the "normal" 5 ones), this is his best one!!! Took him many years to finish it but it was worth it. Of course it also stands as one of the best symphonies of all time!. The final coda in the fourth movement is a monument to the beauty and grandiosity of music. Let us enjoy, we are very fortunate to do so! A final word for that excellent conductor German conductor Kurt Masur!

The more one listens to Mendelssohn's music the more one realizes his greatness.
Mendelssohn was hailed as the mozart of 19th century for his talent,but his family's wealth made him follow other activities,not concentrating his full time on composing and in the end his compositions were less compared to others of the era and becoz of this many consider him as a second grade composer
@@Ernesto7608 Absolutely right. I think Mendelssohn and Haydn are two of the most under-appreciated of the great masters. This symphony is such a joy. And I think you could make a case for at least mentioning, perhaps not comparing, the piano trios in the same sentence as Schubert's and there is no higher praise than that.

I'm Japanese, but I like this kind of heavy performance rooted in German tradition. Conductor Kurt First of all, she played all Beethoven songs in Japan. Similarly, there are many Japanese people who like his performance.

I've been humming this one for a few days -- why, how did it pop in my head? My guess's as good as yours. On a different note (pun), everytime I listen to Fingal's Cave, I just melt away mesmerized (it's been my phone tune for quite a while).

If only Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn had lived another 20-25 years! Mendelssohn ranks with Wagner in creating an elemental, visceral, and magical kind of music.

I heard Masur and the Gewanduas perform this in Symphony Hall Boston in the late 1980's, and it was just as wonderful then as it is here. It's an underrated and charming work that Masur obviously loves and performs with great care, brio, and distinction. And, somewhat unusually, seems to understand that the finale's coda is very weak and requires a lot of management. (It's so weak that Klemperer, late in life, decided to dispense with it and composed his own quiet conclusion.)

The coda is "weak"? Are you talking about the 4th movement? Because the fourth movement is anything but "weak". It is one hell of a finale! It is an extremely energetic and vigorous and passionate ending to an excellent symphony.

@@adamvicari3295 Klemperer loved the 4th movement. The "coda", to which I refer, begins with the meter change to 6/8 and a brand-new hymn-like, or anthem-like melody. I frown on a conductor, even one as gifted as Klemperer, who was himself a composer, re-composing a work. A conductor (or any performer) should accept the work in its entirety as given. None of the above gainsays my assessment of the coda's quality

My Alma Mater NY there when Maestro was with the NYP we'd go to day rehearsals for 5 bucks they took more chances then and did amazing things not so stiff.
As I recall, by the same token, Masur made the orchestra restart a piece, I can't remember what it was, during an evening performance, not a rehearsal. One of my music heroes. Mendelssohn suits Masur perfectly.

Kurt Masur is an amazing artist and Mendelssohn is not appreciated enough. He does not fit in with the bombast of the late 19th century or the tortured intellectualism of the 20th century.

+Bill Derham, his attack on the opening chord of the Allegro vivacissimo is diluted. I hold Gustavo Dudamel highest in the interpretation of Hendelssohn's Third. But I agree that Mr. Masur is an artist to be held in high esteem.
he's more appreciated now then in the last century. the anti-semitic rhetoric (wagner and others) against him was enough to sway scholarly opinion , depicting mendelssohn as a fraud and a light-weight.

Totally agree with you Bill. The more I listen to Mendelssohn the more I realise he had no weaknesses in any of the music composed. Everything he touched was perfect. I sometimes think this is one of the greatest symphonies ever written. And as you say, Masur, a true master. No histrionics, no baton but absolute control of his orchestra. A joy to watch.
One of the longest 1st movements in a symphony orchestra...don't quite remember it being as long...BUT WHAT BLISS IN THE WAITING FOR THE SECOND MOVEMENT, FOR THERE IS NO WAITING AT ALL...RATHER A CERTAIN DELECTATION.

the beginning is far too rushed--Masure squeezes all the poetry out of it consequently and should have known better..there is no emotional resonance--I didn't bother to listen to the rest as there was no poetry at the beginning.

I really agree the opening section feels too fast. It's reflective music, but here it's given no time for that. However, I checked the tempo with the metronome and interestingly, it's very close to quarter note = 72, as marked in the Breitkopf und Härtel edition (after all, it is marked Andante con moto, not just Andante). We're certainly used to hearing it slower than the marking, but I think we're also used to hearing it with much more rubato? Masur plays it very straight, which doesn't do it for me. Do have a listen to the rest though. I find the rest of the interpretation much more conducive to the true emotional resonance of the piece, though I find the main body of the first movement a bit too pushed also. But the slow movement is lovely and expansive.
