I just stumbled onto this. I am 90 years old and it is such a pleasure to hear music like this performed by young musiicians. Thank you!
A year later, I hope this glorious music is still enchanting you. God bless you!
To further expand on what the kappelmeister said: It is actually the second Symphony the Mendelssohn wrote. But he withdrew it for revisions after a few performances because he was not satisfied. And then he never came around to revising it. So it was not published until after his death. And since it was published last it was numbered 5.
Numberings in Mendelssohn Symphonies are the worst kind of mess.
The 4th is not the 4th, the 2nd is not the 2nd and the 3rd is not the 3rd. The 4th is the 3rd, the 3rd is the 4th and the 2nd (Lobgesang) would have been the 4th, but Mendelssohn was unsure how to call it.
@Quotenwagnerianer - Kind of like Dvorak's symphonies
are you still alive?

Anyone who has the nerve to follow a Dominant 11th by first inversion tonic AND go on for another 40-odd seconds to finish has my vote. Bravo maestro Mendlessohn. One of the most under-rated and neglected transitional Classical/Romantic symphonies. Rhorer is marvellous. Thanks for posting.
Played this in Orchestra; it was such a wonderful time. This piece made me fall in love with the symphony and work of Mendelssohn. Thank God for good music :)
Listen the 3rd symphony! It's majestic.
Hear hear!
@@marianmatei1138ans second and four. All
Amen!
I'm playing this in orchestra, this is a nightmare
You must be really really good at playing
Forever young and amazing.
Es ist wunderbar.
Arguably the most underrated symphony of the 19th century.
A musicologist friend, much more knowledgeable than I, regards it as Mendelssohn's finest symphony.
@@andrewbarrow3466 It was unfortunately Mendelssohn himself who started this under-appreciation of this delightful + joyful + noble + invigorating symphony, so different from the Third and Fourth, paying tribute to J.S. Bach.
Bach of course: 'Ein feste Burg'. But there is more in this little jewel: Haydn in the relationship of slow introduction to the main part of movement 1 and a foreshadowing of Bruckner (the early symphonies) in the third movement.
My youth orchestra played it in the lobby of the World Trade Center (north), June 1974. It was a glorious day. After Sept 11th, it struck me as even more apropos.
From arguably the most underrated composer of the XIXth century. (Certainly one of them.)
IMHO the Frankfurt Radio Symphony is the best in the world right now.
3:58 the "Dresden Amen" ( also used in Parsifal). Gorgeous
I used to have a casette with this symphony on both sides, so I didn't have to wind it back, just change sides. I loved this symphony that much!
nagyon okos meg oldas!
Ganz wunderschön!
Richly textured, powerfully performed, assured conducting.
Only eight minutes in and I'm in love with this symphony already. Thank God for Mendelssohn!
And Luther of course
David Colley yes, the riff on Luther jams like Luther never would. I understand that Mendelssohn felt a little guilty about jamming so hard.
@@geerhoar Well, Mendelssohn's family converted from Judaism to Christianity, this symphony is the least attractive of all of them. Quite tedious and plodding - in my humble opinion.
Listened to his 3rd? The best.
David Trainer it does take around 4.5 minutes to get going. I do love Mendelssohn, though, and can forgive.
I'm learning the double bass part for a performance in October. Superb piece.
chills at the grande finale - amazing.
Really mastered. BRAVO. BRAVO
I couldn't imagine I needed Mendelssohn's music in my life 😍!
My orchestra just played this for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, and it sounds beautiful!
Nothing to celebrate about Greatest catastrophes of the Europe ( most of bad things that we have now are somehow connected reformation and protties).
@@hudebnilidlprodukce5137 The current pope is literally a degenerate
Excellent performance of my favorite Mendelssohn symphony.
Wundervoll 🥰
vielen herzlichen Dank, welch seelenvoller Götterklang ☺️🎼💕
I'm playing this in my orchestra and I swear I'm in love with this piece.
Manificant performance! Can't take my eye off this talented young conductor
This is true music in all its glory. Transcendental and full oflyrical expression and ingenuity. After listening to Mendelsohn, it's hard to listen to anything else for a while. He always has been a first tier composer for me, on of the top 10 composers of all time, along with the greats. People are slowly, recently beginning to realize this.
This is perhaps my favorite Mendelssohn symphony; the Italian and the Scottish are too well known. This symphony has such brilliance, especially the 4th movement. It is so climactic, so melodic, a "mighty fortress" of musical achievement. My most beloved Mendelssohn symphony. Note the fugue at 28:20. That final sounding note is to my ear dissonant.
Eileen - Well said indeed! The 4th movement is quite wonderful: developed from the 1st movement's gently rousing and melodic theme. This returns in the surprisingly joyous peaks of the 4th movement. Yes, truly a 'mighty fortress' of unforgettable musical achievement.
I. Andante - Allegro con fuoco 0:37
II. Allegro vivace 12:50
III. Andante 18:29
IV. Choral: Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott. Andante con moto - Allegro vivace - Allegro maestoso 23:00
There is no word. Thank you for releasing this kind of performance. I listened to this symphony during the hard times of my life. I watched this performance today and somehow tears were rising. It seemed to be really in the hall. Thank you very much.
God is our mighty fortress!
Let you be happy peaceful and contented.

When I was very depressed I listened to Brahms 1st piano Concerto but hadn't heard this symphony or the 2nd one which get my out of "bad" times now.@@heernpon8455
love Mendelssohn... !
A brilliant performance of Mendelssohn's epic Reformation Symphony by the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra.
grandiose Aufnahme. Ich bin begeistert. Ein Zauber in dieser Tristen Zeit ohne Live Musik.
What a talent (and what a fine orchestra) this young conductor. Splendid rendition of this symphony, so neglected, that I really love. Refined and spirited.
Exactly, a symphony that is neglected. For example, much better than the Italian by Mendelsohn, which is more famous.
True.
What a wonderful performance. Gripping!
What a beautiful symphony setting. The sound must be beautiful there.
Such a gifted young conductor!!
A MODERN DAY MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS.....
If you didn't already know what a great and brilliant genius Mendelssohn was, this symphony would finally tell you.
Correct! It did it for me
Fully agree
Grand mersi!
A true masterpiece.
don lino franzoloso.
Very, very spacial !!!
A Mighty Fortress is my God! Praise His Holy Name! Psalm 46.
All the Mendelssohn symphonies are glorious. (This one of course has the Lutheran hymn as the theme of finale.) And this is a terrific preformance by the excellent Frankfurt orchestra under Maestro Rhorer.
Agreed!! Each of the five is awesome in its own way, and they are all very underrated!
Absolutely splendid. A very fine orchestra and a gifted young conductor, plus Mendelssohn!!
The conductor was 40 at the time.
@@viktorajstein And therefore twice the age of the composer at the time....
Fantástico! Emocionante!
Very well played. Magnificent composition.
Magnifique!
I. Andante - Allegro con fuoco - 0:30

^ Very useful comment
Expressive perfection in the opening Andante and the 3rd movement - real musical emotion in this truly great but strangely much underrated symphony compared to No.4 ("Italian"). Wonderful brass and woodwind parts in the superb dynamics throughout. No classical composer could write much better than this, brilliantly served by the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra under Jérémie Rhorer !
hldstnom Well said. A timeless work.
Oddly enough, Mendelssohn himself was ambivalent about this symphony.
Molt contemplativa, molt dolça i alhora punyent.
Felicitats al director!!!!
Fantastic music fantastic orchestra
Bravo.
Wonderful!
Excellent! This young conductor manages to bring out the greatness of this symphony. He can be a promising talent.
That is if he doesn't end up wasting himself on composers without depth in their music!
Madana Bhat-Khandige What's wrong with this symphony?
Nothing at all. In fact I was saying this conductor should stick to the masters. He should avoid "symphony mills" like Shostakovich and Bruckner. If he sticks to Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, etc., he'll attain greatness.
What's wrong with Shostakovitch?
One doesn't usually get so pure a connection with Shostakovich as one would with Beethoven or Mozart. When you hear the funeral march of the Eroica symphony, you know what Beethoven was going through, the funeral march fills your heart with somber emotions. The same cannot be said of Dimitri. (I don't hold Donizetti in much of a regard also, he never wrote any concert music!)
Breathtaking, moving, what can one say?
Carpiccio brillante no 22 and hebrids , my favorite works from this man.
Mi preferida entre las sinfonías de Mendelssohn. Muy bueno.
Mi preferida tambien!!!
Maravillosa sinfonía,un magnífico espectáculo, emociona!! Desde Uruguay, Luis
The guy extract impetus from the orchestra at the same time keeps cohesion. Great choice of tempi as well.
Beautiful !!!!! Congratulations !!
Amazing!
Jérémie Rhorer - the orchestra obviously enjoy playing for this wonderful young conductor
Gave me a complete refreshed impression after playing it in non-professional orchestra! Great!
Best version ever. The tempi are just perfect. Thank you maestro.
This was a great performance of this brilliant symphony. Luther would have loved to have heard it playing as he nailed his theses to a cathedral door in Wuttenberg. Thank you.
This wonderful symphony is a breath offresh air in our life of less than 100 years in this trasient world of so much hassle and annyances
That’s a commanding performance!! Brilliance!
happy reformation day everyone.

FOI EM 1830 QUE MENDELSSOHN COMPÔS ESTA ESTUPENDA SINFONIA, PARA COMEMORAR OS 300 ANOS DA CONFISSÃO DE AUGSBURGO. EM SUA ESTRÉIA ELA NÃO FOI BEM ACEITA PELOS INTELECTUALÓIDES DA ÉPOCA. MAS GRAÇAS A DEUS, NOS ÚLTIMOS 50 ANOS, ELA VEM SEM SENDO MUITO COMPREENDIDA E APLAUDIDA NO MUNDO QUASE GERALMENTE. O TEMPO É O SENHOR DA RAZÃO AFINAL DE CONTAS.

wooooow very beautiful

Felix Mendelsohn was actually a Lutheran
The Choral Ein Feste Burg... was composed by Luther himself (so they say...!)

Thought he was considered Jewish by the Nation rajim?
Composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession.
And in fact his 2nd Symphony and not his 5th. That is how things get mixed up when works don't get published right after composition.
@@Quotenwagnerianer Ah, that fits!
But never played at the Anniversary Ceremonies. Apparently they still regarded him as a Jew.
