Thanks Andy. for this excellent video. This video is really timely because I'm trying to adjust the pedal for my 600e. The pedal gets hot . Also, when the button is pressed on the pedal the motor roars for awhile then suddenly begins running very fast. The pedal doesn't have any graduated speed.

I'm glad you found my series! What you are experiencing on your foot pedal is a very common problem. In this series, I'll be showing how to check the carbon stacks for dust and damage and how to adjust for graduated speed. Most of these older carbon resistance pedals get warm when sewing, but "hot" means out of adjustment or damaged carbon discs. They are easy enough to adjust, but no one makes the discs anymore that I can find. When I find too many damaged, I have to cannibalize them from another pedal, or just buy a new electronic pedal. Stay tuned, and you will be able to determine your best course of action. Thank you for watching Andy Tube.

Andy, I did fairly well on taking my 301 A to the spa. NOW I am working on my foot pedal. Degreased and dried everything, my rubber feet are bathing in alcohol. But, I’m very leery about opening up and letting out all those little carbon discs. What do you advise?

If you're nervous about getting into that, you could try this. Watch the video where I adjust the pedal. I'm trying to put yours back together and adjust it that way and if it performs properly for you then you're done. If it does not, then you should think again about taking a look at those carbon discs

Thanks very helpful. Tip! I place stoppers in sink and also now use a plastic tub that fits in sink. I dropped a small metal bracket that holds light glass for light down into garbage disposal. My hero of a husband spent half hour retrieving it for me. Oops! Think I’ll keep him another 30 years.

Andy, good night! Are these Singer foot pedals always bivolts? Or do these models, because they are older, also have a specific voltage? In Brazil there is a voltage variation from one city to another depending on the hydroelectric plant that was built. We have cities with 110 volts, 127 volts and 220 volts. My town has a dam built by the Canadians and the voltage is 220 volts. Singer electric motors have a specific voltage for 110 volts or 220 volts. But I'm told these old electric foot pedals with charcoal discs are bivolts.

I can't give you a definitive answer as to bi-voltage use of the foot pedals. Here in the USA our electrical system is 110/120 volts country wide. The Singer foot pedals I have worked on over the years mostly say they are for "95 to 145 Volts". They are rated between .53 to .7 AMP. I have no way of testing them on anything over 120 volts. I do know that motors are different and a US motor rated at 110 Volts will burn out if used on a 220 Volt system b/c friends in other countries have told me that.

Andy - I just got my 404 today off of eBay and it's in good condition and sews a beautiful stitch. But I'm OCD and want to give it a thorough cleaning, oiling, & lube. I ran across your 404 youtube videos for restoring the 404. Which one should I start out with first? I have plenty of time and plan to take my time doing each section. Fun!!

I'm excited for you to have found a nice 404! It's great it already sews a nice stitch. Here is a link to the whole playlist of my 404 restoration: ua-cam.com/video/6RgiOegFx-I/v-deo.html
I'd say just start watching them and decide how much, if any, you want to dismantle and clean. You can do some or all of the process. It will be a great education of how your 404 is put together and works. I also did a miniseries on that exact motor restoration, including how to check and change the motor carbons. This comment on part 2 of the foot pedal restoration shows you found my current miniseries. I would say start with the machine, however much yu wnt to do, then the motor, and finally the foot pedal. I know yo wwill do great because yo have the right attitude of taking your time and you are correct; it WILL BE FUN! Contact me if you have questions along the way. Thanks for watching my channel.

I smelled burning or very hot smell. What should I be looking for? Cleaning? Replacement?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  3 роки тому

Cleaning for sure, maybe (maybe) replacement. Cleaning the carbon discs will be the most important for you. As the carbons break down they make dust. As the pedal gets out of adjustment it runs hotter and hotter, especially at lower speeds. The dust can even "smoke" and "burn" creating that smell. Of all the pedals I have rehabbed, only a couple were beyond repair. You can even find replacement discs at a couple of sellers now if you find many broken ones inside your pedal. You can surely buy a new pedal, either carbon stack style like the old, or a newer electronic pedal that barely gets warm and won't wear out.

Add cord to a bag that can seal and add a couple dryer sheets to it. It should pull any foul odors within a couple of days. Maybe a separate bag with the unit you could not clean with a used dryer sheet and a bit of baking soda tied into a pouch. Seal up separately.

What about iron foot pedal rusty?

I've never had a rusty foot pedal, but I've cleaned rusty sewing machine parts. Any rust remover works, but I use The Must for Rust by Rustoleum: www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/krud-kutter/rust-remedies/the-must-for-rust-rust-remover-and-inhibitor

Михаил Станискин - Now, if in our kitchen, in the sink for washing dishes, fruits, vegetables, a man washed some kind of equipment, his wife would treat his back with a cast-iron pan SO that he would forever forget not only his hobby, but also the road to the kitchen. Well, after all, Zadornov is right about the mental abilities of Americans!
ANDY TUBE - I have a very loving relationship with my wife. She would never raise a hand against me, let alone an iron pan. If your wife does that I assume you deserve it. When you insult other people or groups with your comments you show your insecure character. Remember, a man's character is his destiny. You can do better.

Михаил Станискин - A very interesting situation with comments from the Russian - for some reason they have not been published. Is this a NEW APPROACH to the fact that not too flattering opinions are spoken?
