No kidding? I'm happy to hear that. I had to google your machine and it's quite a unique beauty. Thank you for keeping it in service. Take Care.

Thank you, Michael! It was good to see a worse case scenario controller! You can tell Michael is a very organized person...

I agree. I think business owners who are organized like michael tend to be successfull. He was great to send me tha old controller to show what can happen to the carbons, which was causing his 503 to hesitate. I am amazed hat when he spun the hndwheel he could still sew!

I'm glad my videos helped, and I need to start shopping where you did. $5 for a slant needle machine is incredible. Nicely done!

This has been really interesting. Watching all the his in your series. I have just recently acquired an old RedEye with a button foot pedal in black. Don't know if it is any good yet, since it has to have all new cords, belts and such. Afraid to plug it in. This type foot pedal was what I learned on and is my favorite. I really appreciate your taking the time to show all the steps. Just hope I get brave enough to take that apart...wow all those discs!! Thanks again sir.

Thanks for watching it. Yes, those discs! Years ago when I opened one for the first time and out came 60+ discs ... well, whew! I wish I had a picture of the look on my face at that moment. It is rewarding to repair one and get it back to working condition. I have done too many to count now. When I clean the discs I usually put on music the TV and I also use 900 grit sandpaper on many of them, instead of the paper towel. It just depends on the condition.

At 2:18 n the video you mentioned that Michael, the 'donor' of the old failed foot pedal had decided to go with an 'electronic' foot pedal. If I decide to replace mine, where do I get one of those for my 221?

I would like to send you a old foot pedal like this one. The ceramic part is broken but the pedal squeezes in and out. I replaced it with one from on line pedal. I don’t have your address. Thank you for the wonderful information.

Hi Andy, can you please tell me where I can order carbon stacks for my foot pedal? When I restored my pedal, it had really damaged burnt carbons. I had to throw many of them away. I would like to try to go back into the pedal and refurbish the carbons.

This is the only place I know of to buy carbons. (Only like in the world) www.sewingpartsonline.com/carbon-resistance-unit-singer-618804-003.aspx
Watch this video to see how to open the tube of carbons you get. There are enough carbons to fill both tubs of the button style foot pedal.

So the older carbon peddles are not energy efficient. Since most of the electricity is wasted as heat like the old light bulbs.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  3 роки тому

Right on, John. Not as energy-efficient as an electronic pedal. The carbon stack is a big resistor and resistance to electricity creates heat which wastes electricity. They work well when clean and adjusted, and the industry standard for 100 years. If I can't clean and adjust it, I keep it for parts and replace it with an electronic style pedal. Excellent control and they barely get above room temperature.
Thanks for watching my channel, John, and take care.

Where do I get new carbon stack to replace them

    • @andytubesewing1953

I made a video about using a carbon stack tube from a clamshell-style foot pedal. ua-cam.com/video/R4JuQ3o9dB0/v-deo.html
You can still buy the carbon tube from a few sellers: www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/carbon-element-for-singer-foot-control-part-618804-003
      millardsewing.com/product/carbon-resistance-unit-new-for-singer-foot-controller/
      www.sewingpartsonline.com/products/carbon-resistance-unit-singer-618804-003
The new carbons are twice as thick. The tube contains enough to fill both sides of a button-style controller.

What I should of taking pictures of is the screws Andy. I can just look at you videos to reassemble the bigger parts so no photos necessary.. I'm looking for the 2 housing screws. 🤔
I didn't tape them to the housing as I usually do ..very thougtless of me. 🤷‍♂️
I'm avoiding the next task 👆👆😳
I'm looking at the pedal that I've been avoiding and I hope mine doesn't look like Michaels. I

Oh, I hope it doesn't look like his either. What a mess. He decided to buy a new electronic pedal as he had no plans to mount it in a cabinet but only use it on the floor.

The carbons will burn up if somebody tries to run a stiff gummed up machine. The pedal is only going to work on a free turning machine or the current to the motor will be too high and destroy the pedal control carbons.
