The Theme Park History of the Matterhorn Bobsleds (Disneyland)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The Matterhorn Bobsleds is a pair of intertwined steel roller coasters that opened at Disneyland on June 14th, 1959. In this episode, we talk about the first-ever steel roller coaster’s origins, the ride itself, and the changes that have taken place over the attraction’s 60-year lifespan.

Every time I ride this, I remember it being bumpy. Every time I get off, my back's been readjusted lol. But it's still so much fun!
I've been going to Disneyland since I was a kid and had an annual pass for about 12 years before starting to work there in 2012. I went to Europe for the first time in 2017 and visited Zermatt. Seeing the real Matterhorn was the most incredible experience ever! It is so majestic and beautiful, and Zermatt in general was a gorgeous place.
I really remember 1990 Disneyland fun more information

Sweet! Thank you for mentioning. I’m hoping next one will be Radiator Springs Racers, Space Mountain, Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run, or Fantasmic.
"The guests begin their descent down the mountain, encountering the snowman, who wants to add more items to its collection"
*OH NO YOU AIN'T TAKIN MY IPHONE-*
Amazing that they essentially crafted Expedition Everest from this! Disney are amazing
The Ice Climbers Music is a nice touch
Nice video about this attraction theme park history
I rode this for the first time in 2016. People complain that Space Mountain in MK is rough. Well, I would have to consider this a much rougher ride overall. (Yes, I realize this is an older ride compared to SM).
I'm glad I got to ride the sky buckets through the mtn and again after the next to the last remodel. Can't wait to see the 2015 remodel.
I wish they could tear up the track and remodel it to be as smooth as Big Thunder Railroad. Lots of the curves are not banked at all and cause the sled to knock hard into most curves. Besides that, the banks, drops and curves were only designed to have a single sled, so linking 2 sleds would cause that much more frantic pushing and pulling at each other at every bend of the track. The first sled will hit the brake pad first causing the second sled to get bumped back, it's jarring after feeling it 30 times in a row. Also, the sleds were not repainted, they are completely new and much lighter, like they were made from the milk jug plastics just like the new boats from "it's a small world".
It's amazing and historical, but currently is the only attraction in Disneyland where people want to ride it but don't "because its painful or jarring".
I have been thinking about making a theme park channel and watching your videos give me lots of ideas, so thank you so much
Wow, that is a great history there. I do love the architecture that went into making the Matterhorn to scale, and the snow made with glass laced paint, incredible!'
Kudos to your work once again! It's been a rough time working in the tourism industry atm due to Covid-19, and there's doubts hanging around Singapore. I do hope things here pick up, or no one is coming to travel here :(
Love this ride ♥️♥️
I prefer Everest slightly but this ride is a classic. The yeti was a great addition to the story and the animatronics are gorgeous

WoW I was just thinking to myself is it me or does this ride remind me of Expedition Everest LoL it’s definitely ya spiritual successor, it’s an amazing ride. Can’t wait to eventually ride the original ride.
8:49 image ratio fail. Just present historical clips as they were filmed huh, dont warp the aspect ratio. It looks stupid.

Went on this yesterday, the track is so bad I got jabbed in the ribs. It Never used to be that bad as a kid, never. My back is so sore too, no wonder they call it the Chiropractor.

Matterhorn is definitely one of those rides where I always forget how rough it is until I ride it again. Still a classic though!
Very rough ride, unpleasant when I was on it more than a decade ago, I can't imagine how rough it is now
I’ve only been on there like twice because my back.
Ann M in 2012 they took 6 months refurbishment, not sure if they tracks where included though.
I went on it this past Monday and it definitely was rough but it did feel a bit smoother than when I rode it a few years ago. Usually I come off it with my back hurting but not this time around.
Same with Space Mountain for me
I was told a good story about the Matterhorn's brake system from Ed Feuer, the Imagineer that was in charge of the 1977 bobsled update when the ride went from 1 car to the 2-car trains. The existing brake system couldn't stop the cars with the added weight when the bottoms were wet. He was tasked with finding a way to make the brakes work. He thought about how lots of cars would not stop when intersections would flood, but his Mercedes always did. He did some research and learned that Mercedes' brakes have little round pucks on their surface instead of being flat like other breaks. So if you ever notice all the brakes throughout the ride have these pucks, you now know why and you can thank Ed.

@bigevilworldwide1 they've already re-done the track once, that's the one that's there still today.
Cherry Nguyen and a broken back :)
They need to really pad those seats.
I whacked the crap out of my elbow on that ride when I went around Christmas this year- it was sore and hurt to move for a couple of days. It also gave me the back/neck jostling that everyone else gets and I did notice people did more “oof”-ing than screaming. There’s also a couple of sharp turns that I just fully anticipated the metal snapping and the toboggan going flying over the park

The new yeti is extremely real and scary, especially for a Disney ride.
Jordan Mori I won’t lie, it gets me every time. Not sure why, maybe just the human-like size and proximity, or how quickly you go by... but yeah, it does feel fairly spooky!
The thing that makes it more scary is the fact that it’s a full animatronic figure that has been programmed to move more quickly and naturally giving it a more realistic and plausible range of movement, the 1970s ones were ok but very limited and static so they most likely just used the appearance of ‘Harold the yeti’ as a basis but replaced almost everything else with new animatronic tech
Have they ever changed Harold's voice, and who does it? I remember they had a company wide contest in 1978 to find a voice for him but don't remember the winner's name.
Fred Tatasciore
Ok soft
Yeeeessssss! I always wanted to see you do the Matterhorn! Also, could you do the history of Tokyo Disneyland for the next Theme Park destination? You already did Tokyo DisneySEA, so wouldn't it be right to do the other park in the resort? Besides, with the Japan 2020 Summer Olympics, now would be the right time to cover the park!
One other update you forgot to mention: In 2016, the bobsleds were given padded seats due to complaints from guests hurting their tailbones on the bobsled seats.

9:29 Thank you for giving me credit to use my POV of Matterhorn bobsleds’ queue, I highly appreciated it! 👍🏼 And also, I heard about the history of the attraction as well.
Thank you for making this video :) The Matterhorn will always have a special place in my heart. Being on this ride with my dad is one of my earliest memories ever. I remember riding in my dad's lap and it being night and I was so scared but I loved the feeling of it. I covered my ears and my dad held me in his lap because I was scared of the Yetis. I will never forget how loud they were back in the 2000s. You used to queue on the side of the mountain and just hearing the loud growl every couple of minutes was truly an unforgettable experience. I remember my dad telling me when all of the Yetis were gone so I could look out at the ride. It has changed so much over the years and it doesn't have the same vibe as it did when I was younger. But still, to this day it is one of my favorite rides. Just my dad can't get on it anymore cause he says it hurts his back lol. One time when I was little I looked out and just saw the glowing red eyes and hearing the gnarly growl and the whispy snow air as we ascended the hill in the beginning. The only thing I wish they kept was the LOUD growl that you can hear when you are in line or just walking around it, it was so intimidating. Seeing all of the different versions of the ride really brought me back to that time. thank you again for the nostalgia :')
Mr toads wild ride.
Or as me and my dad call it, to hell and back.
I'm sure Pirates of the Caribbean must be on the list... but it'd be very cool to see a review covering the substantial differences in layout the ride has around the world!
Pirates is a bit more complicated because of how each version varies in some shape or form. Whenever we do cover it it will a longer video than usual.
This was a great video! I'd like to see a video on Radiator Springs Racers or Pooh's Hunny Hunt soon, please!
I remember before the 1978 re-do and the damn mountain was hollow (the equivalent of riding Space Mountain with the lights on). Disney really brought the attraction's quality up a few notches with the ice cave theming!

Oh and Tinkerbell would fly from the peak of the Matterhorn to the top of the Disney Castle each evening. This was a Disney cast member dressed as Tinkerbell, held in a harness, and carried along a cable spanning the two structures. She would glow from a spotlight that would track her. In the day, this nightly event would be anticipated by park guests causing them to take pause and in hushing voices, direct their children's gaze to the skyward spectacle - furthering the idea that 'life is but a dream'.

I love this ride. My grandparents had this tradition with there grandkids that when they turned 9 years old they would take them to disneyland and when I went to disneyland for the first time in 2003 I remember him telling me that he went on the ride all the time when he was younger and now it's one of my favorite rides and I can't wait to take my son when he's old enough
When I first went on the Matterhorn I had my eyes closed the whole time because of that damn abominable snowman
But now that I’m older and seeing lots of ride through videos on UA-cam I’m more used to it
Please do a video on the disaster that is fast and furious: supercharged. I would love to know the history and how universal allowed it to be made.
It's mind boggling that with so many people involved with building that "ride" that not a single one stood up and said "You know, this blows!! We probably shouldn't do this."

I'm so happy This was never replicated at another Disney park. There are some things that should be for the original Disneyland and no where else.
Mark Crooks Not sure I completely agree with you. I have friends from Orlando and they absolutely loved this. They say it’s a shame they don’t have this. I admit it would be interesting to see how they do a version of this in other parks.🙂
It was cloned (somewhat) by the original Space Mountain in WDW, and it was originally planned to be cloned for Epcot.
Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom is pretty much WDW’s Matterhorn.
They were gonna replicate it at epcot as a "Mount Fuji" rollercoaster...... but you know.... MONEY lol
