    Enjoy and learn from you Daniel, but I have to admit. I did click on this video just to see Marisa at work. Marisa is just a joy to watch working. She actually is part of the process and not just a prop like some models. Great personality and evervescent. Adds a brightness to any video she is in. Of other models you've worked with I'd say Paulina comes in a tad behind Marisa. Great project idea teaching like this. Solid job on teaching in a way she can learn and learn hands on. Not saying I'm a bit older, but I remember when ISO was ASA/DIN. LOL. Nice trick on counting the clicks for making aperture/shutter changes.

    This is fun. It's great to see Marisa's reactions to learning about photography. It's a reminder of how I felt in the beginning: confused, overwhelmed, with flashes of understanding. I still feel that way after many years of shooting, which is why I keep watching these videos. There's always more to learn.

    This is going to be a great series! You are a heck of a teacher.
    Since you can set a maximum allowed ISO for (Manual Mode + Auto ISO) I almost ALWAYS use Auto-ISO because of the 3 points of the Exposure Triangle: (1) I almost always care exactly what the aperture is for depth of field (in focus) reasons, (2) I almost always want a specific shutter speed to reduce motion blur when hand-holding the camera or want a deliberate amount of motion, and (3) I don't really care what the ISO is as long as it is below the maximum allowed value that I have set.
    I actually find the ISO to be the LEAST damaging of the Exposure Triangle since a wonky aperture will put things out of focus and a wonky shutter speed will allow for blur. Both of those problems will result in a photo that is entirely unusable. At least a photo with higher ISO is still usable, albeit with the possibility of slightly more noise.
    And from a purely creative standpoint, both Aperture and Shutter Speed can be part of DELIBERATE creative choices, whereas ISO is just along for the exposure ride and not often part of creative choices.
    I am going to bet that in the end that will be Marisa's favorite mode because she (1) already mentioned liking Seth's deliberate blurring so she will want to control Shutter Speed and (2) almost everyone under the sun starts out wanting blurry backgrounds so Marisa will want control over the aperture.
    Only time will tell!

    Yes Daniel, when at an air show that have aircraft with propellers performing, having the camera in shutter priority will ensure that you don't capture aircraft at 2000 feet with propellers that aren't moving.

    It's interesting to see someone learn these things and see them in action the first time. (I remember the day I bought my first non-crap camera, which was a Nikon F2... The way things would snap into focus, the sound of the shutter, the first time someone talked to me about "Kelvin", etc.. All were the start of being more enlightened about photography, so this brings back some of those memories.) Have fun! :)

    Great idea for a series - looking forward to watching Marissa learn! I think this format - with you actually giving a practical lesson - is hugely underutilised, and will be really helpful to a lot of people. Can't wait til you blow her mind with how flash exposure works. :D

    another excellent idea for a series daniel.what i have found when teaching newcomers to photography, is understanding natural f-stops on the aperture.the iso and to a lesser extent,the shutter speed are relatively straightforward, either halving or doubling values.it becomes a little more confusing when talking aperture values and trying to explain what the different steps between stops are 4 -5.6 -8 -11 -16 etc..maybe a wee explanation of this might be helpful.i know you started covering this with using the 3 clicks to count each stop,on 1/3 stop increments.

    • @DigitalGrease
      @DigitalGrease 3 роки тому

      @@DanielNortonPhotographer Fair enough, and I don't think it is a universal preference, however; I have noticed some "making of" videos of "Wonder Woman" for example, directed by Patti Jenkins and having a fairly large female presence in the production, that people expressed a more relaxed and collegiate environment. At the risk of mansplaining, there is a different energy dynamic at work, especially with something as close up and personal as portraiture.
      There is also something to be said for having the "male gaze" at work when you want that kind of sizzle in your advertising or promotional head-shots (which is of course just advertising). Men are not completely superfluous (yet). :)

    Agree that shutter priority mode is my least used setting. I think the only time I’ve tried it is for panning shots of vehicles.
    Auto-ISO does confuse the PASM dial - being in manual mode but with auto-ISO doesn’t make a lot of sense logically. That’s one reason I like the retro Fuji dials, but sadly they’ve been stepping away from them lately.

    I use shutter priority a lot when shooting outside though I understand the relationship in the triangle. I like to keep the iso low 100 to 400. when I take a picture it will post the aperture. if I wish a higher aperture I need to adjust the iso to make it work. like I did a video for memorial day and I was taking picture of local town's war memorials. oddly enough they seem to be located on the busiest streets. so I have to be ready to get a shot with out blur, maybe, ha ha

    I started out shooting thoroughbred racing and always used shutter priority...set my canon a-1 to its fastest shutter speed (1/10000)...the reason I didn't use manual is because in the location where I shot had a lot of partially cloudy days and the horses would run in and out of clouds and sun...you only need to get "burned" once to figure out that M was not your friend

    Unless the 'rona gets worse, our school prom is on in April... I think I will be more conservative than in years past (Gavin's candlelight in the moonlight effect was tricky with different sized groups and their silly poses last time...). The venue gives me about a 10 x 25 space to set up in with moderate light control, so I'm estimating about F 5.6, 1/160 on a 35mm as a starting point. How do you adjust for rapidly changing groups?

  • @keithsandercock1412
    @keithsandercock1412 3 роки тому

    When do I use S (shutter priority)? Photographing cyclists zipping by I use 1/1250s or faster. Jet aircraft in flight on approach to airport with 300mm or longer telephoto lens, 1/500s. or faster. For turboprop aircraft on same approach, same lens, 1/300s so that prop appears to be moving. Use of higher shutter speed freezes the prop motion making the aircraft look like a toy model. For street photography I set shutter speed at 1/250s, f8 and auto ISO. In your Hasselblad EV discussion, only aperture and shutter speed change, not ISO (or ASA for us old folks!)

      Love the counting clicks thing, light bulb moment! BTW 35 years doing sound - the RF signal between your packs and the receiver is dropping out, it could be distance or more likely interference- depending on what you are using you may be able to choose a different frequency. If you can’t change frequency, try and keep “line of sight” between the packs and the receiver. So if the pack is on your belt towards your fanny, the receiver should be behind you for best results. From an artistic perspective, the left/right panning of the voices is distracting. Just my opinion🤓, YMMV lol Thanks for the videos!

    Hey Daniel, I always enjoy your videos. Well, nearly almost always ;-). I'm not a professional or anything, just a guy who enjoys photography. I do know quite a lot about digital imaging because of my job. I'm an astronomer, the kind that uses cameras and telescopes. These days, and for quite some time now, the cameras are digital, and the differences between scientific cameras and consumer cameras are only a matter of details, not anything fundamental. So I have a question. Why do photographers so often say that increasing the ISO setting increases the sensitivity of the camera? It does not do that, which I'm quite sure you know, though you made that same claim in this video. The camera and sensor have a fixed sensitivity to light, and increasing the ISO only boosts the output gain for the image. That is why the noise seems to increase: you are taking a dimmer image, with lower signal to noise, and boosting its brightness globally, signal and noise, but not signal selectively over the noise. It is exactly like increasing the volume on a receiver while trying to listen to a weak radio station; the music will get louder, but so will the static. Some photographers get very aggressive and nasty when I point out this simple fact. I'm wondering if you have any idea why this is misstated so often, and why people become so angry when this mistake is pointed out. It seems counterproductive, especially when introducing new photographers to the skill, to misinform them about what one of the camera settings is doing. Especially given that it is nothing that is particularly complicated or difficult to understand.
    Anyway, just wanted to ask to get your take on this. I find it puzzling, mostly because of the hostility I sometimes -not always - encounter when I mention this. I greatly appreciate all the work you do putting together your videos. I have learned tons from them, even if I am not going into the studio everyday (I don't have a studio) and putting it to use.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer  3 роки тому

      The reason is because it is much simpler to explain it that way, and the fact of the matter is that the science doesn’t actually matter to 99% of the people that are shooting.

    • @donaldbrocksmith9508
      @donaldbrocksmith9508 3 роки тому

      @@DanielNortonPhotographer could it also be due to the fact that most text books and user guides describe it as a change in sensitivity to the sensor? For the end-user it really doesn't matter, what matters is finding a way, without using flash, to increase the exposure without adjusting shutter speed or aperture.

    And ISO is not the sensitivity of the sensor, it is applied gain.(when you start teaching that in the beginning, as replacement film ISO in the past, it will not confuse them later)

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer  3 роки тому

      It has been my experience that the opposite of what you are saying is true, most people will not their head when you say gain but they have no idea what that actually means.

    • @RS-Amsterdam
      @RS-Amsterdam 3 роки тому

      @@DanielNortonPhotographer This is what I tell them (beginners) maybe you find it useful : ISO is an indication of the sensitivity of a film in the old days. Basically the higher the ISO number of the film, the less light it will need to get a proper exposure. Film has been replaced by a sensor. Now we can not replace the sensor every time we need more sensitivity so to get the same result they amplify the (basically to dark) output signal of the sensor.
      Still basic and people tend to understand that (try it on Melisa ;-)
      If that doesn't work thae make the comparison with someone talking in a microphone and someone listening to the radio. If you need more sound : The person talking needs to talk louder (ISO film) or turn up the volume of the radio (ISO Sensor)
      This is for the total noobs of course.
