  • In this video I show how to purchase and install the 2018 Map Database update for the Uconnect Navigation system. This is NOT a Uconnect software update video, but rather a video to update the MAPS database. This update is a long time coming - its the first update of roads and routes since I purchased the car in January of 2016 - long overdue. BUT unfortunately it's not Free : (

    My father passed away in February of this year and left me his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. He purchased it brand new in July of 2015 and when I arrived at his home in upstate NY this past February....it was parked in his garage. To my surprise....I started it and saw that he'd only put 3200 miles on it the entire 6 yrs he owned it :-( It broke my heart to think that it was only the 2nd brand new vehicle that he'd ever bought in his 73 yrs of life....and he bought it as a retirement gift to himself. I'm not sure WHY he hardly ever drove it in 6 yrs time....although he had a 99' Grand Cherokee that he drove the majority of the time as he had 5 Cocker Spaniels he had to haul back and forth to vet and grooming appts and whatnot. Anyway, sorry to ramble on vs. get to the point....my question is....since it's a 2015 like yours is....is there any way to update the UConnect System itself? I WOULD eventually like to update the navigation system too....however, that's not as important to me as updating the UConnect software. The only problem I've run into so far is when I go on the UConnect app and enter my VIN number to check for any software updates....nothing comes up.....and I KNOW it needs to be updated with it being almost 7 yrs old. I'd like to be able to actually use the UConnect Access but unfortunately when I called and spoke to someone in their customer service department....they said they can't get me registered in my UConnect account until it's been updated. Like I said....I DO want to update the Navigation system eventually as I tried using it on my way back from NY to my home in WI. and it was taking me all over the place and telling me to turn onto roads that didn't even exist, etc. Any advice on updating the UConnect software would be appreciated though....thanks.

      Sorry about your dad's passing. My own father passed in October 2019. 😔 I'd recommend that you take it into a dealer and see if they can update the Uconnect system software because I don't know of any way other than entering your vin on the website. The dealer can probably also update the maps database for you.

      May not be worth it for you because you likely get pretty solid cell coverage in your area. For me, some of those back road areas of CT get very inconsistent cell service, so it's nice to have uconnect as a backup to the Waze app.

    I checked yesterday and the update is now $150.00 off, thus costing $455.00. Not sure how you got yours because I couldn't understand that portion of your video. Frankly Uconnect is a bust. Friday I tried to voice command it to find an address. The system could not understand me even though I kept repeating the address when prompted. I tried entering manually and each time before I finished the address, it stopped and showed addresses not even remotely connected to where I was going. This has been a problem since I purchased my 2016 Charger R/T. Sorry for the rant.

    • @CTHellcat

      I think what you were looking at was buying the complete nav system, not just the map update. My RT did not come with nav from the factory, so back in 2016 I bought the complete nav system for $600. This video is about updating only the maps database, which assumes you already have the full nav system. It should cost around $125.

      Yep - I'm not happy about the price, it should be free like a Uconnect software update. Plus, I subscribe to the Monthly Uconnect advantage service for $15 per month, and I still had to purchase the map update. It should definitely be free for uconnect service subscribers. Regarding Phone's - you live in or new NYC so you always have good phone coverage. In rural areas, you can't always count on a data signal, which can screw up mobile phone navigation software. Some of the mobile apps now let you pre-download map data for this very scenario, but it varies by app and accuracy. The Uconnect Nav system is like the old Garmin nav devices, where you don't need a data signal of any sort, so for me it's worth it to have a secondary Nav system in addition to my Waze app.

      This is not the uconnect system upgrade (which is free). This is the navigation maps database update, which is not free. This updates all the roads and intersections in your nav system, but does not update the uconnect system software.

      I agree man. Way too much money for this. It should be free, considering how much you pay for the navigation option, but even if it was $50 it would be a little more palatable.

    Instead of having the car idle for an hour while it updates (or leave it in "RUN" with the engine off), could this work while driving? I go on trips lasting an hour or two occasionally,... couldn't I start the car, begin the update, and hit the road for an hour or so?

    • @CTHellcat
      @CTHellcat  4 роки тому

      I'm guessing it would work, but I can't be sure. The uconnect system restarts during the process and I don't know if it would detect the car in motion and interfere with the update process. If you try it, please let me know and I'll pin a comment to the video letting future viewers know that it's an option. Thanks!

      @@CTHellcat It appears the car must be parked and idling for the software to update and then load all the new data. It took ONE HOUR AND THIRTY FIVE MINUTES!!!!! once the update started. Ridiculous

      @@CTHellcat Comments to think about,... After the update was complete, the first two short trips had the clock unsettable, and showing a weird time even though in the settings I had selected GPS time. More importantly, the map was screwed up,.. it showed the symbol for the car about ten miles away from the actual position. On the third trip, it seems to be back to normal.

      @@CTHellcat Hey man - I do appreciate your upload though. You're helping people save money which is a good thing.
      IMO, if FCA is going to charge, they should have put out an upgrade rather than just an update. Other car/truck makes usually give free updates and FCA should have done the same with this one. I probably would spend the $100(sale price) if it was an upgrade with a better user interface.
      Bottom line, they should have done more.
