Celebrities Will Say Almost Anything on Cameo For The Right Price

- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- It sounds like an episode of "Black Mirror": Celebrities recording videos saying almost anything asked of them, on-demand. But plenty of famous and not-so-famous names are doing it, for a price, as part of the talent roster of the Cameo app.
"We've seen gender announcements, engagement announcements, all types of different things,” Cameo CEO Steven Galanis told VICE News. There's about 18,000 "talents" to choose from to record your own personalized announcement, from no-name "influencers" who command as little as a dollar a video, to celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Brett Favre, who charge around $500 and up.
Founded in 2016 by three college friends, Cameo now has an estimated $300 million valuation. As the requests come in, celebrities fulfill them, and Cameo takes a cut.
But sometimes the requests can be dubious, like the time in December 2018 when Favre was asked to recite what turned about to be coded anti-Semitic propaganda. Cameo told VICE News they've since developed tech to prevent such requests, and that Favre is now an investor.
But still, why would anyone subject themselves to the whims of fans who might not always have the noblest of intentions? when requesting a video from someone like, say, Gilbert Gottfried?
“Fame is a weird thing: It gets to be kind of a drug,” Gottfriend told VICE News. “
“About half of what it takes to have a successful career is just reminding people you’re still here.”
And then there's the money: Since Gottfried joined Cameo, in December, he's done about 1,600 recordings, and we estimated he's earned almost a quarter of a million dollars in those nine months. Cameo takes 25 percent.

I wish they wouldn't put losers from youtube and tiktok on there. Who gives a damn about those no-name people? Some of the celebrities charge outrageous prices too. For example, Scott Stapp, the frontman for the defunked has-been band Creed charges $500. Two of the Wayans brothers are on there and they each charge $1,000. Are you shitting me? I will say that a lot of the people on there are very reasonable with their prices.

I agree. It's another performance for the celebrity and the fan is like the movie or TV producer paying them to play a part. It's a win for both in my opinion.
Why does someone have to force you to do something for you to be able to be angry about it? it's perfectly ok to disagree with things even if they don't remotely affect you.
I guess it's different because when you meet them in person in say a con, and you ask them to wish you a happy birthday or give your parent a shout out, they might do it for free, not all of them but some might. But here, you have to pay for literally get wished a good day.

This is weird. I don't like it. But such is capitalism.
Integrity, not here.
I have a sad story of meeting the voice actor of my favorite anime, I was SUPER excited in line, 100's of people waiting to meet him, and I went up as one of first and explained my tattoo based on the anime and they guy looked like he could care less "oh cool." His buddy in the back was just smiling literally throwing the money fan's pay to see him in a trash bag. It was super depressing after and made me feel really off. Alot of anime cons like that, it's depressing seeing B-list actors waiting there for someone to approach there empty booth.
I hope you learned out of that.
Being a fan is utterly pointless.
Your first clue should have been 'hundreds of people waiting...'
Being slowly consumed by fans can't be much fun, either.
@@moonharp Yeah one of the things about being famous is that, as a human being, you can't possibly interact "properly" with every fan. If someone like Will Smith or Jim Carrey stopped on the street to talk to fans, they'd be standing there forever, answering the same questions over and over. Not to mention the more obsessive fans parodied in "The King of Comedy."
May i ask what anime it was?
Well, that sucks. Sorry people have to go through shitty moments at cons.
Idk if it's just me but I tend to like B-list actors, both live action and voice ones, more so than the popular ones who have thousands of fans in line.

I feel like this is like glorified streaming. Demanding money for "real time interaction" but what are they really talking to you for if not for themselves?
Some Cameo's you can book a private or group call to talk to the celeb rather than having a message made. These are the ones that are far closer to interaction. Some people are also cool talking about basically anything.
The LAST person Id want for a cameo is Jesse "extortion" Jackson 🤣
I love the line “We literally run the gamut from priest to pornstar” so much.

Love the concept, but disappointed at how low-grade the videos are. Some of them don't put any effort in at all.

People paying for Cameos is sad.
Black Mirror isn't fiction, it's trolling.
This is too cheap for the celebrities, and too expensive for the fans, simultaneously.
Why are people surprised by this. Actors are people that have been paid good money to say anything that the writers and directors tell them to say and become another person if need be all to tell a story. Why not say what you want them to say for $100 to $500 for about 30 seconds of their time? Say they could do about 10 of these in an hour one lazy Sunday morning. Do the math folks.
That's people in general. They will do and say just about anything for money
rename video to "Gilbert Gottfried will say almost anything for the right price"
When you pay $2500 for a Cameo with a dude that's masquerading as a woman, you have more money than sense.
^This
Your estimate on Gilbert Gottfried's earnings is off. 1,600 cameos x $150 each x 75% (the celebrity's take) is "only" $180,000, not "a quarter of a million." Just sayin'...
Finally, somebody’s going to tell me they love me
EVERY time I see Gilbert Gottfried I think of that time Howard Stern played a message of him using his real voice.
I just found out Nova Online has a Cameo. That's how I ended up here. 😂😂😂
I think the best use for this is C-B list celebs that you personally like that you'd love to ask a question about. IE take smaller shows or sci-fi shows. Like I have tons of questions I'd love to ask about shows like Star Trek and Stargate, questions about the process, how much gets ad-libbed, what was it like on set, what was the funniest story, if you weren't cancelled, what would you of liked to see happen with your character? Things that either don't have time to get answered, aren't appropriate for TV interviews (Ie swearing, specific subjects considered not family friendly) or similar.
It's not that different from paying to go to comic con and seeing a panel, or otherwise paying to try to meet the celebrity to ask something. At least this way you can have a higher chance of getting your question answered directly, with out the person being bogged down or in "convention" mode. And the person in question knows exactly what they are getting into. Better than being accosted in person when you're trying to just live life.
I don't think that paying such a high price would generally be worth it, but for those out there with smaller favorites from movies and TV who want to ask a question that would otherwise absolutely be missed, well, it's pretty cool.
That all said, parasocial relationships and celebrity culture are their own kind of can of worms, but to ask questions about a show or the process or hypotheticals about a character from the actors perspective, that's pretty cool to me. That's less worship about the actor themselves and more asking questions about their job.
Someone would have to be a complete fool, to pay to talk to these people, because of their so-called celebrity status. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, when I saw the website. Heavens, the VANITY!
You would do better going to the Dollar Store and buying your loved one a gift, than paying one of these people to communicate with them. It's equally as CRASS! 🤔🙄😴
Exactly not like they have enough money
I mean, meet and greets, concerts and pretty much everything else where you pay in ANY form (buying a movie, going to the theater and some could argue even just paying attention) are really no different.
If you want to argue that celebrity culture is probably not great, I whole heartedly agree with you.
It's such a disgusting cash-grab service that not even the A-List celebrities wanted to be part of it.
3:30 - 3:39 : what? If anything, this sort of service elevates celebrities even higher.
As if if celebmania wasn't bad enough.
Gilbert godfry, Samuel l Jackson, and James earl Jones are the only reason this app should exist.
Funnily enough, Jackson and Jones probably will never be on Cameo *because* they're too famous and have more than enough money.
Who the hell is this "Gilbert Godfrey" doofus people keep mentioning on Gilbert Gottfried videos?
It's a transaction! Not right to call it an interaction.
You are exactly right!!!
"We've got everyone from pornstar to priest."
Well... Pornstars sell themselves and Evangelicals would love to have a new platform to preach on... from their private Jet.
Celebrities Jobs are to be Famous... they get paid to he known by people(sort of). .. and now PAID to interact, no not even interact. "Say something the person wants them to say." Yup 100% transaction, especially if that person is going to he 'acting' while they say it.
Yeah it's not like you're doing an interview with them. You pay to have them talk to you in a video for a few minutes (maybe even less than that). They can't see your face or hear your voice so how is it considered an interaction?
