With Schubert everything sounds like a German folk song! For me, this feeling, this mood is the purest expression of the German spirit. Splendid. And the musicians in this recording all belong to the absolute top of that time - just the singers. Sooo nice and 1000 thanks for uploading it.

Beg your pardon, but who is meant by "that well-meaning but misdirected enthusiasm that is doing its utmost to establish false cannons of taste"? The statement seems quite ironically understated in order to prevent censorship. That we have come to the point in wich free-speech is just an empty formulae...
The "Deutsche messe" is the order of the Protestant servce of Luther, in German. The "German requiem" is an oratorio with psalms brought from the German Lutheran tradition, set up as a concert piece, not intended for liturgical use as Bach's cantatas. The Schubert Deutsche singmesse is unrelated to these. In the old times, Catholic priests celebrated their rites in Latin, silently. Therefore, the laity who attended mass often developped their own devotional practices during the services, that often departed from the context of the mass and the priest's rites. The Catholic bishops and priests tried to accomodate the laity's devotions to the context of the mass. The Deutsche singmesse was therefore deviced as a set of hymns for the laity that describe or summarize what the priest is reciting silently in Latin. The intention was to harmonize the laity's actions to those of the priests and explain the laity, through music, what is happening during the divine service.
I just ordered an 11 disc set of Sawallisch conducting Schubert sacred and secular choral music a few days ago; these recordings are part of it. For anybody who still buys physical CDs while they're still around, the set is ridiculously cheap, barely over $30 or about $3 per disc.
