Sylvain Cambreling (born 1948 in Amiens, France) is a French conductor. Trained as a trombone player, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He joined l'Orchestre Symphonique de Lyon (OSL) as a trombonist in 1971. In 1974, he took second prize in the International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors. His conducting debut was with the OSL in 1975, leading Robert Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust. At the invitation of Pierre Boulez, he began to guest-conduct the Ensemble Intercontemporain regularly from 1976.
Cambreling was the music director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels from 1981-1991, during Gerard Mortier's tenure. He served as artistic director and general music director of the Frankfurt Opera from 1993-1997. During his Frankfurt tenure, he encountered controversy over proposed budget cuts from the city of Frankfurt and the director for opera and ballet, Martin Steinhoff. From 1997-2004, he served as principal guest conductor of Klangforum Wien, with whom he premiered Luciano Berio's final opera, Cronaca del luogo. He was a frequent conductor at the Opéra National de Paris during Mortier's tenure there, from 2004-2009, holding the title of "principal conductor" for the first season of that duration, a title shared with six other conductors.
From 1999 to 2011, Cambreling was chief conductor of the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg. In April 2010, he was named the next Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera, effective with the 2012-2013 season. He became principal conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in April 2010, with an initial contract of 3 years.

One of the last singing of a greatly loved singer Hermann Prey.
Very spiritual and reflective. Beautiful late Schubert. Thanks!
The 16th notes underpinning the beginning of the Sanctus are like transformative, transfiguring rays of heavenly light.
What a Work of Divine Musical Genius and Heavenly Inspiration is Schubert's Mass in E Flat! An ascending AFFLATUS to celestial Glory..
From 22:47, Et in carnatus est.... Thar section is very unique, sitting right inside the Credo, with an exquisite sound, very well performed here. The soloists are beyond composed. Great work!
The best interpretation of this incredible piece.
Incredible! Words cannot describe how great this work is!
I hear and like sacred works by bach, mozart, beethoven, haydn, handel, brahms, verdi, dvorak, ..., and they all have their merits.
however, by far, toching me the most is this piece.
d950, d956, d960 to me the three pillars of unfathomable depth of emotion by late Schubert.
@@lincyu8 Verdi's Requiem is just a bombastic garbage.
@@Rickriquinho a pathetic and funny combination of opera and symphony, rather tragicomic than mournful. But don't use words like garbage with juvenile categorization when you're talking about a great composer's work. All great composers have mediocre works
actually it's quite uneven and too imitating Mozart. First parts are just boring by their banality/ The true masterpiece of Schubert is 8th symphony.
@@roger5725 he-he. If you don't feel mediocrity of many works of them, then you cannot feel whole geniality of their masterpieces,
Fascinating! Thanks.
Wonderful!!!
thank you very much for this post
¡¡ Maravillosa obra !!
And who are the choir? Why aren't they given a mention for such wonderful performance?
Una delle migliori in assoluto
I can't believe this is THE Herman Prey singing there!! What? Such a small part? And then as a bass when he was a world class hugely important baritone? Maybe he was doing it as a favor to the conductor or something?
Danke.
22:49 RIP Deon van der Walt 💐
super prestation
Kiitos!

Jonas Kaufmann looked like Ronaldo at that time.
Really flat mr. kaufmann at 24:17
I thought the same!

49:21/55:31 What does "LUNA NOBIS PARTEM" mean, esp. in the context of the Mass?
It's the "Dona nobis pacem" ("give us peace") from the Agnus Dei - a part from the ordinary of the Mass.
@@jonasschauer4016 Thanks! To my Ears It was hard to discern PRECISELY all the Latin Words! It seemed to be LUNA Nobis Partem....!

Robert Shaw's version is so much better. It's also on UA-cam.
I have it. I think this is better, and more authentic and uplifting.
The young Kaufmann looked like Cristiano Ronaldo
cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, cough
stop your ruining the performance
Cambreling as with others fails to relate this work more to the earlier and chirpier masses in the cycle rather than forwards to later romantic heaviness and grandeur; the smirk in the music just under the surface largely escapes him. He keeps a grip on the line and a gentle onward breeze, and finds some inward Schubertian working, yet turgidity creeps in and it begins to sound retiring; the Hamburg orchestra doesn’t get Austrian humour.
Considering that Schubert wrote this mass in the last year of his life, I think it can be accepted as part of his "late" style, and forgiven its lack of chirpiness.
this is gods Music........schubert was not an Atheist..........no great Music was ever composed by an Atheist.......Facts and love from vienna Austria.........where it all began,.,.Haydn,.Mozart,.Beethoven ,.schubert,.,.etc...............
I can understand atheists and may God forgive them, however when I hear works like this, it's the last thing for me to believe that composition of any of these could be possible in the mental state of disbelief.
to bad i dont understand rusian
Clearly you deny atheists the capacity for being human in the deepest sense of the term and for having spiritual and existential longings.
That is just plain silly but I guess being a believer yourself you might just not understand the many flavors of atheism and agnosticism and how little that has to do with the core of music, or what any great art is.
@@lincyu8 The Glagolitic mass disproves that. Composed by an atheist but seems to have divinity running through it.
Brahms was an atheist.
some kind of feeble imitation of Mozart's Requiem
Mozart's Requiem is far superior to this composition.
@@michelrocker9044 Shut up, amateur! This is criticism.

It's far more appealing and inspired, as are all Mozart's masses.
Hard to imagine a refined person as Schubert wrote any of the in general lame, bombastic and stale sounding masses.
So what? This is Schubert's ethereal offering and it's a very great work. We praise God in many different ways. That's just a baffling thing to utter.
