While we were in Nashville for the Produce Like A Pro Academy Masterclass, we had a chance to take a tour of the wonderful Blackbird Studios! We've done tours of this studio in the past, but this year Mark Rubel gave us a more in-depth behind the scenes look starting from the hallway that leads to studios C & D.
This hallway is filled with a lot of the “overflow” gear which tends to be very obscure/rare- like the LA1D, which is a special 1176 custom build for the state department. It has no adjustable attack or release and it is optimized for Arabic! We don’t know how many of these were made because they were all made for the government.
As far as the studio goes, John McBride wants the clients to have access to “every coloured crayon.” They don’t want a client to feel like they’re compromised because they don’t have some access to the sonic pallet, and that’s why they have all of this gear!

Thank god a new video! I needed something to watch while I air out my studio/office space. It's a good 98 degrees here in Vermont, USA.
I really enjoy these sort of videos, what if you had a "Time Travel" segment of some sort?
What were you guys producing and recording with in say 1985 or something? 1994 when I was born?
Could you possibly set up something that would resemble your home studios back in the day?
At least some of the equipment used, maybe try and mix on some old equipment.
Thanks again for all your great videos!

5:38 -- cool piece of gear, but unless Blackbird has customized their Echorec, there is no way to adjust the delay time. The four heads around the platter are in fixed positions and can be switched on/off by way of the front knobs, but there is no way to vary the speed of the platter. I love these machines and have owned probably 12 of them since the early 1990's. I'll put of a video of my most recent one at some point in the near future, but part of the charm is that there is NO variation on delay time, and you are "stuck" either dealing with what the machine spits out, or varying the tempo of the song you play. Pink Floyd's use of it was brilliant in that the wow/flutter is what gives those amazing waves of spiral dreaminess... on anything. Great pieces of kit!

Great stuff, as always. It's kind of sad to think that, with the demise of the supergroup, nobody is going to get an extended period (a couple of weeks) which they could use to really explore the sonic options afforded by some of the really obscure gear they have. The fact they still have all that gear in one place, and have started tours and their academy to get people to see it, is something to be very thankful for.
Did the "poly-cylindrical reflectors" work, as a concept? I'm guessing not really, as you don't see it used? I only ask, as I once decorated a modular trade-show stand with split 4 inch bamboo poles to make it look like a stoner's idea of a beach-hut. Having an excuse to do the same to my little home recording shoe-box would be great!
