Nikon F3AF in 1983 was the first Auto-Focus camera. It came with two specific lenses: AF-80mm f/2.8 Nikkor and the AF-200mm f/3.5 Nikkor.

1:20 minute into the movie you show a Wikipedia page of Nikon SLR’s, there you find 1983 for the F3AF (Autofocus). So you show the correct information ...😎

Interestingly the lenses you mention will autofocus on the F501/N2020 as well.

There was also an autofocus teleconverter for the F3AF, the TC16, not to be confused with the TC16a which used the later mechanical coupling with the motor in the body. The F3AF, F501 and F4 are the only bodies which support the old system.
I have the 80mm f:2.8 lens designed for the F3AF and the focus mode selector switch on the F501. S and C modes work as expected, but M mode functions as the C mode.

@@srfurley I also have the 80mm f2.8 and it's a super sharp lens even by today's standards. I sold my old F501 as it was a) too noisy and b) too slow.

Same for me, I got the F-301 in 1990 and used it until 2004. Great camera, it never gave me any trouble. About the beep it makes for low shutter speed: That switch was permanently turned off, it's too annoying. One of the things I miss most from this camera is the micro-prism ring in the view finder that makes manual focus so easy. Your video inspires me to take my F-301 out again for a spin.

I used to sell them back in 1987. One of the first AF SLR cameras. It had Centre Weighted Average metering. And the Program modes were:
P Standard Program...camera sets both aperture and shutter speed depending on available light.
P Hi same but with the bias towards higher shutter speeds.
P Dual Combination of both P and P Hi which would adjust depending on focal length of lens used. Telephoto switches automatically to P Hi whilst a wide angle would switch to P mode.
I reckon despite the fact ir be evF-501 is almost 40 years old it is still capable of taking decent pics.

Nice one. I’ve never owned a F-501 (I once had a F-401 and 18mm lens that I used to attach to my hanglider), but I think C mode is continuous rather than constant. Same difference really.

Good point about the beeping. I have that on my Minolta X-700 and it has come in handy a time or two. I never thought about it but yeah none of the Nikon cameras I've owned have had that feature. As a matter of fact, the only camera that does is my X-700.

The F501 AF is a nice little compact camera. Besides several F301 and AF601, I own two F501. The F501 is more difficult to find on the market. If you buy a used version, please check the battery compartment. Often the AAA batteries are drained and corroded. Thx for sharing your photos.

I really liked the photos this time. Very well executed. There is something special about Nikon cameras, even those that were produced for the amateur mass market. I started my Nikon ' journey ' all those years ago with a Nikon EM and a brilliant little Nikon Series E 50mm lens, and then came the FE, F3, FE2, FM2, F4s, F90X and the little marvel F80.

Good little camera, better than the F-401which came later. The 401 added a built-in flash, which the 301 and 501 lack.
The 501 offers red left and right arrow and central green blob focus assist with manual focus lenses which can be useful with the terrible eyesight that I now have.

these are lovely cameras to use, they have a big bright viewfinder & a nice weight, probably due to all those batteries !, I much prefer this camera to my F65 which on paper is better spec but with tiny, dim viewfinder & all the charisma of digital. The F501 also has ability to leave out the leader on rewind [much easier to load onto spiral for developing]. The F301 can be had cheaper if you don't need autofocus & has all the good points

Back in the day, in 1990 to be precise, I bought Nikon F-301, already used, really cheap. Great little camera, it had all features that I needed (AF was not among them). The only real downsides was that it was loud (really, really loud), and that it used than expensive AAA instead of usual AA batteries. And, unfortunately, despite the camera not being even 5 yrs old at that point, the leatherette on it already showed signs of tear. I sold that camera years lather when I was switching systems.
