Meet The 11-Year-Old Painter Who Made $1.3 Million At Art Miami | Forbes

- Andres Valencia's works sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars-and he’s not even a teenager. The tween artist talks to Forbes about his inspiration and his ambitious plans for the future.
Andres Valencia, who began painting when he was about five years old while standing on a step ladder to create large-scale works with a mix of oil stick, and oil and acrylic paint, is also a war history buff. The Commander (2022) is a nod to that fascination and a delightful play f a green uniform popping from a lavender backdrop.
Valencia took the art world by storm, quickly selling out a Chase Contemporary booth at Art Miami last December, where crowds gathered to watch him live paint with Caribbean-born American artist Bradley Theodore. Folks ducked under ropes and tried to clamber up a ladder to sneak a peek at the then-10-year-old virtuoso who sold paintings to celebrities such as Brooke Shields and Sofia Vergara to benefit the Perry J. Cohen Foundation (PJCF), which supports the arts, environmental, marine and wildlife education and preservation, as well as teenage entrepreneurship and boating safety education.

Forbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success.
Some smart grown-ups have done a remarkable promotional job with this young man.
Why would Forbes not give this boy the credit he deserves by at least posting his name on the video title. Not just "11 year old painter". He has a name!
How did he get his art into the museum tho.. his family must have connections
Someone is managing (?!) this kid wonderfully...dreams, agenda, ambition- everything that any 32yr old activist could hope for
Better than neglecting a kid or letting the smart phone serve as their parent like many seem to do...
amazing at his age to be able to chose the right colors and shapes..really impressive! he is really gifted
This very young man's work is amazing as is his imagination and talent. A true prodigy I agree. Keep going young man. Your parents must be thrilled.
When I watch videos like this and Pablo Picasso and other child prodigies I remember the things I've done at that age...photo realistic sketches, basic computer programming, building solar power radios from kits, woodworking, soldering... I use to watch people doing these things, so I did it too. At that age you can be/do anything! Properly guided and allowed to learn at their pace (which is faster than normal) they can Save the World. But misguided, abused and neglected they can become bitter and full of resentment and lash out out of frustration making their continuing life even more disastrous. Forget having your own children, unless you're capable enough to break that "curse".
To often mediocrity/simpletons/greed takes 1st place.
Peace
Agree 100%!
I was not guided, and actually was born into a highly dysfunctional home that was/is highly narcissistic. In spite of, but maybe due to that, and due to very young parents who were not positively tuned into the children, I unintentionally turned my focus onto creative pursuits. Starting in JHS, I learned to sew at expert level (largely self taught), & taught myself how to draw. In HS, did ceramics, painting, taught myself the art of batik, airbrushed, and began metal smithing (jewelry). Also started working in the 11th grade and had a car in the 12th grade.
Inadvertently learned the value of & to save $$ by doing chores no one wanted to do for cash (power mowing & edging lawn, washing the cars, ironing my father’s dress work shirts, and shining his shoes). I’m a woman, now in my 6th decade.
Even though I would later learn my family was highly narcissistic, they were working middle class, we camped, hiked, father raced motorcycles (hobbyist), went to his and car races, and both parents would be then or later DIY just about everything.
Have always done well for myself, while at home (no picnic there!) & later in life after leaving home, however, family has continuously tried to tear me down, and it not only got worse, but was constant (until I walked away).
The bottom line, even if you are emotionally neglected, not guided or nurtured, or raised in an unloving home, you can still succeed. As long as you (importantly) learn to love yourself, don’t consider yourself a victim (survivors are real!) or blame others for the way you turned out or the choices you made at any age.
This kiddo rocks, but, outside of the promotion and galleries (hey, he’s probably had an art rep from the go), his talent is inherent. He is a natural, and sometimes, I seriously believe that he and those like him, are truly “old souls.”
This is so true. My siblings and I were all fairly talented in the arts even at a young age. Teachers and students would marvel at my work and classmates would take my art away and go show it to the teacher themselves.
But my parents were over worked, exhausted immigrants who also simply didn’t know how to raise kids. They didn’t know how to praise or encourage or even acknowledge us.
Yeah, I love kids and feel like I was born to be mother. But I am nowhere near healing my messed up mind. So, even though I am loosing time everyday to have a child, I will not have one until I am pretty confident that I have broken the curse.
"potential" for kids is such an understatement. At that age YOU CAN BE ANYTHING. He is talented to begin with but given the right environment (born in a first world country, have loving parents, a supportive community) he flourished. That is why it is so disheartening that in reality not all kids can unleash there full potential. Unloving families, Finances, war, poverty, even apathy can stunt or even stilfe growth , creating cynical, disgruntled and bitter adults
What a Wonderful Young Painter!!!❤❤
I wish this young prodigy the best of good luck in life. It's not easy to make it as a young man in this world, but everyone should start somewhere. He is remarkable, and wait just few more years until he grows up, and then looks back on his works, he'll definitely say how lucky I was.
Stunning work.
I see people feeling behind in this comment section. Remember , If you are not at this talented kids and your older than 11 , you still have value.
What he is searching for is not to create, but to experience the process of creation. Were missing the point just because we want to be something. It's not about YOU. Instead its about the EXPERIENCE of CREATING SOMETHING!

Was born with a gift and is utilizing it. He’s about to paint his best painting yet….life
Thank you so much, lots of love from kanpur nagar, uttar Pradesh India.
He was just on Jimmy Kimmel! Kid is amazing.
Amazing, a kid with actual talent
Very cool!
Beautiful
Amazing
This kid is wise beyond his years ❤️ I hope he stays that way
You ste the best
Wow young genius Excellent job 👍👍👍
God given talent
Amazing 👏
He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Show just last night . He studies Artists as well.
So good
His parents needs to make sure he is PROTECTED at all times from whom ever!!
….or maybe protect him from his parents who knows….
He is lovely
he is a very good painter
I don't dislike his paintings, it's just hard to believe that a young kid would choose this Picasso style for himself all on his own and not some parents pushing it.
wrong.
Why are they asking this young person about the war in the Ukraine?
Because he did a piece about it. He explains it and it’s shown in the video. His own Guernica, you could say.
1.3 millions? After taxes that's like 14 bucks
🔥🔥🔥
As an art collector, I would never buy a colorful modern Picasso painting from this kid.
Add me to the list soon & making my way in the Art world now
So cute! He recently made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Lucky kid that his parents showed him art so young, some are just meant to be great while others are meant too be nothing I guess
😂
If you do not create , you are still not nothing. What he is searching for is not to create, but to experience the process of creation. Were missing the point just because we want to be something, instead the EXPERIENCE of CREATING SOMETHING.
We are all capable of creating something. We are all human beings and we are experiencing the human condition, and in our own ways able to express what it means to be our individual selves. I don't think that anyone is meant to be nothing. Of all the possibilities in the infinite vastness of the Universe, you exist, and that in and of itself, is a miracle.
The kid is just trying to imitate art already produced, and social media has helped brand him a "genius." There is nothing special about his art but the trend culture and the fact that most people are ignorant about art history have given rise to these types of artists.
He did an interview and said he thought he was coping but when he looked them up he found out his work was original and the media helps him with his work plus Hese a kid what do you know about him
All artists are scammers lol.
You should start making art 😅 @@joddog
@@Sarahkozakj I’m a pretty good bullshit artist already
@@joddog halfway there then lol 😂
How?
I'm tired of people glorifying/exploiting kids that can paint. And from the looks of it, I can tell you right now that an experience painter has a hand in this.
you think? xD well that adult doesn't know how to paint anything either
The kid is the experienced painter, he has been doing this since he was 5, he was 11 in this video. With world class training and guidance, a kid that has his brain soaking up everything he gets exposed to - miraculous skill development is very possible. As for adults, with no particular pathways and feedback to follow, it might take over a decade to develop similar skill.
@@anikatasnim6001 i could paint like him when I was 4-5, is not THAT special
@@alfredonoriego6390 naah you couldn’t, not at 4-5. This is not only about shape, which has its own brilliance, but also color and composition. It takes time to master those stuff.
@@anikatasnim6001
yeehh I could :) Already at that age I was painting, and I painted faces, animals and landscapes that I later improved on.
❤🎉ToomCapeTown
Step 1: Convince enough people that a young artist is the new Picasso. It's easy; most "art connoisseurs" are clueless with a lot of time to waste
Step 2: The base price of the "artist's" paintings skyrockets, although no sane person would or could buy them
Step 3/a: Mysterious art "collector/dealer" appears and spends a ton of money to buy a painting which will be resold numerous times
Step 3/b. "Philanthropist" buys a painting, then donates it to an art museum
Step 4/a,b. Use your imagination
For real 😂😂😂
it really is a playbook....total product.
So sick
Connections get you places
I saw him on a video from Jimmy Fallon and I think he has a bit of genius.
Yes his art is good but he has a great agent .They know to ask a lot of money then people think it is worth it.
Hyper-realistic to me is the most talented artists, and I doubt he could paint hyper-realistic like most people can’t , but as far as abstract goes, I’m not mad at him, it is actually pretty good. 👍
1:42 they've already used him for their propaganda? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
God loves this kid more then me for sure
😂😂
0:11 the guy with the hat on the left, that’s Grant Cardone!!! thumbs up
They look just like doodling to me...
😮
coming from
Jimmy Kimmel Live
I wonder, Andres, do you need to adopt a grandma? I'm looking for a fun position. I could be a myse. . . I already look a great deal like your subjects. ❤
He was on the Jimmy Kimmel show recently
The Simpson and Cubism mmm…not bad idea
Well managed kid but fine artist too.
of course, he's from America
Project...
The kid it may end up the next biggest Ponzi scheme
Is a printing machine for his paintings 🖼️ and to many can’t do any good for the ridiculous high prices
Still a possibility he can mature and develop a new original style and the actual painting will still worth something or keep somehow their value
Just a Hype train at the moment hope he can manage his life between 14 and 20 & keep composure
HOW MUCH OF THE 1.3 M GOES TO THE I.R.S. ?.....
This is so terrible… No matter if the kid is 11 or 34, 59, 80… its mall/ airport/ starbucks paintings…
The one shot of him painting is a canvas with the picture already on it, as if they used a projected image….not uncommon in art. I sm curious if he used DALLE To create the body of work, and then he painted like paint-by-number.
That would be realllllly easy to do. Until I see more evidence these are literally his original works, I’m calling BS. Millie Vanilli of the art world. Or Big Eyes. If so, it will come out and it won’t be cute. I am a classically trained artist. Artists like Picasso, Van Gough, Dalí, they perfected still life sketches and paintings before organically evolving into their own styles after many years. I think mom and dad are dirty birds. I could be wrong. But I don’t think so.
Right? Seems suspicious
u sound restarted
@@broragnarok146 but you actually ARE.
Something doesn't add up. Actor maybe?
God gives the talent 👍
Hope his charachter survives to all this buzz
That’s art? Darn I should’ve kept my doodles when I was five..
People think he's the best 10yr artist,meanwhile I'm finding better 10yr artist online,I'm a 10yr artist and I'm pissed.
👍

Creo que la Pintura de Ucrania Aplica También para el Genocidio que Está Ocurriendo en Gaza por Parte de Israel.
Amazing🫶👏👏👏👏👏
First
wash money thorough an 11 year old...
Is this a joke?
Kids conning the system and i love it. Art people are such whackos.
Money laundering
He's not prodigy just another print money making machine again of Art people. How many kids did we watch like this again and again.
Sorry, but this child is better than Picasso! The paintings are more natural, without “intention” as Picasso
Please tell me your joking…
@@CArt123-en9os Picasso declared that he wanted always “to paint like a child, because I can paint like Rafael, but not like a child”! I thing it’s true! Basquiat painted his nightmare and statement like a child, that’s why he had success at the first exibition
Don’t believe in fairytales guys
Rubbish
The kid is a decent artist for an 11-year-old, but nothing special….only wealthy celebrities would pay the astronomical prices $$$ for his Artwork…🤣🤣🤣
Wow he knows all about the history of US, Russia, Ukraine!
