to the people that don’t know what asthma feels like, it feels like no matter how hard you try to breath, you can never get enough air. as an asthmatic, it is truly terrifying.

It sucks man. I'm 30 years old and have suffered my entire life, and it gets worse year over year. I've had a few ER visits during my early adulthood.
I went undiagnosed until my early 20s. I joined the military prior to the diagnosis, and really struggled. But I pushed my way through the training and physical fitness exams, barely passing the minimum requirements every time 😂. I always thought that my breathing was a struggle because I never exercised (clearly not the case). I'm not overweight and never had been, but I was not in shape, you know?
Anyway after I joined the military I DID get into shape (US Army). Yet the breathing problems not only continued, but they got worse. I barely graduated my basic training and secondary training (AIT at Fort Gordon in Georgia) entirely because of my poor pt performance.
My military career came to an end though when I collapsed during a run. I was transported to an emergency room off base, where they took scans, asked questions, and ran tests for a couple days, then diagnosed me with the condition.
The procedure to discharge me started immediately and only took a few days to process me out (general, not dishonorable or medical). I've contributed to struggle ever since.
I always feel like while I'm trying to inhale, my body is wanting to exhale, but also vice versa. So if any of you reading this think you may have it - go get tested asap! Don't wait like I did.

Asthma is a very annoying and scary condition. My worst experience was one night when I had an attack. I couldn’t tell anyone what was happening. The words just can’t come out. I saw everyone as tiny particles and lots of tears came down my cheeks. At that point, I felt I was going to die cox I was literally out of the world. I could only see little stars all around.
Luckily, I was rushed to the ER and I got better in a few hours. When I got fine, everything felt like a dream. I couldn’t explain to anyone. They only said I passed out.
Asthma is terrible. It can kill you in a flash.
I pray that anyone reading this doesn’t get caught up in this chronic condition.

That is so true, its horrifying especailly when you're young and don't fully understand whats happening to your body. I used to have pretty bad asthma attacks when I was younger. Coughing to the point of almost vomiting, coughing your lungs up, etc. It also doesn't help that you get all sweaty and are crying and now the room feels so stuffy.
I used to always be rushed to the ER when I was little at my grandmothers house because her house was near cornfields. This happened more than 3 times at least and it was horrible.
Now I'm glad my asthma attacks are less severe and I barely cough and know what to do even if I don't have my inhaler on me. It also helps I have a preventative one too! Good luck to you too hopefully this disease finds a cure soon!1

That's because you can't exhale all the air in your lungs. Try to fill your lungs to the top and then breathe a little bit more, that's how you feel when you have an asthma attack, right? You can do exhalation exercises during an attack to help you clear your lungs.
Exercise: (i didn't invent this, it is an exercise a PT gave me about 15 years ago)
Inhale to fill your lungs, form a small hole with your mouth (keeping your lips almost pressed) and try to exhale (it is supposed to feel hard to exhale this way) when you feel that you are running out of air to exhale tighted your belly. You have to exhale like your life depends on it when you feel that you have almost no air left. That last exhalation will last about 1 second.
Then you will feel the need to cough. Don't cough yet! Repeat the exercise 2 or 3 more times and then you will cough and that will be the best feeling in the world.

My asthma has gotten so much better over the past couple years. I went from taking two puffs every morning and evening to maybe one puff a week. Exercise never triggers an attack but for some reason laughing does. I always have to be careful when I spend time with my friends because there is always a chance that I laugh too much and end up in the hospital.

Keep discipline, keep control of your life. No disease can control how much enjoyment you can have in life. (Keep your inhaler close, take allergy shots, Zyrtec and live on. )
I have the same thing never been in hospital though. Allergies are very severe for me cat and dogs mold a mold b ragweed and I cant laugh super hard. Its fine we live on, serve society make a meaningful difference. (I am saying this for reassurance, not to downplay your symptoms)
What I hate as well is family members then have pets with the very allergen that I have makes me think there just doing it to annoy me. Then act like "ohhh I did not know, then proceed as normal no change in action, I guess they made their decision, Its just hard for me to accept the delusion (Moving on is a very important skill I realized).
Some people are just insensitive, oblivious there is no love in there heart merely calculations.

@@Turnpost2552 it really sucks when people are insensitive about our triggers. Luckily for me, I've had great success in dealing with my allergies because of a new treatment I underwent recently. It has honestly made such a huge difference in the way I live my life. I don't ever have to worry about falling asleep without taking my inhaler again. I've had moments where I have made spontaneous plans with friends and left the house for days without my inhaler. A couple of years ago, the anxiety from not carrying my inhaler alone would have triggered an attack. Life is honestly so much easier when I don't have to constantly keep my disease in check.

I have asthma, and like many, I couldn't always keep up with my peers physically. Because of this, I was bullied. I was always a bit more cautious, and I was aware of my condition, so I'd avoid certain activities out of concern for if I had an asthma attack. The video described the feeling well- the burning sensation in your chest, the struggle to breathe, and the many triggers, such as fragrances and pollen. Honestly, asthma is not easy to deal with, because you're prone to exhausting yourself a lot sooner, and things that your average person can do, such as a quick lap around the neighborhood or a walk up a flight or stairs, is hard to do at times, especially if you aren't used to doing such things. If you meet someone with asthma, please be considerate of their condition. Don't spray fragrances around them, allow them a chance to catch up if you're out walking or jogging, and don't treat people like us as a burden or something to make fun of.

Breathing is one of those things that we shouldn't have to work so hard to do, but it's really tough sometimes. I find that it's less painful to stop breathing when I'm having an asthma attack, probably because of the "too much air in the lungs" - which is extra hard when it's triggered by anxiety.

Until a few months ago, I was talking with my friends (one of them has asthma) about conditions that we have. That's when I realized I had asthma. That's why I was so weak and would always run out of breath when exercising. I had always thought that it was just my weak physique.

    • @livebrain
      @livebrain 3 роки тому +6

not all asthma ppl get shortness of breath in PE. My kid with asthma can pretty much do what other kids do, he is average in sports. From my understanding is that ppl with asthma have "weaker lungs" or "muscles" and thats the reason why they get ou tof breath so fast, but you can practice sports and be good at it, you just need to control your asthma trough medication and exercise your lungs/muscles. If you have weaker lungs/ muscles you tend to not push them hard, that leadz to them being weakerr. There are certain exercises breathing exercises to help with that, a couple of minutes each day is enough . Also sports is not always a trigger for ppl with asthma and theres some vaccines for "Dust" or cat fur, etc etc that can reduce some triggers.

When I was a child, I always have asthma almost every day, hence there wasn't a day when I wasn't coughing. This condition continued on up until my college days. I was actually dependent on inhalers but they barely help in actually relieving my symptoms for the entire day.
Having asthma grew a fear in me because I already had a classmate who succumbed to its symptoms.
Fortunately, when I started working, I was finally able to discover that if I drink Cetirizine every day, I do not get asthma attacks or minor coughing. But when I don't drink it, the asthma hits me. Since discovering that anti-allergy medications kept my symptoms at bay, I have never held any inhalers again nor did I need to go through nebulizer treatment. Whatever the allergy trigger is, that I don't really know.

When my Dad and Grandma rushed me to the ER and saw another kid about the same age as me turning blue, I decided, I wanted to say my goodbyes and I love you’s but couldn’t because of how painful it was to speak. @HHalcyon 3 роки тому

@@layniabooboo5846 Anyway most asthma cases should be an emotional problem. Same with allergies. Surface level thinking will always net a response akin to me being false. So I presume you'll deny me outright. But that's a response before having had the motivation to look for ways to dig deep within one's core to see what's cooking there. But asthma, like allergies, are only symptoms and frontal assault to find out what's going on will usually result with more questions than answer. Look at it this way: is there any logical reason as to why something like asthma should hit during laughing? It doesn't make any sense unless it's self-sabotage (pollution can help, too). And this problem was initially conceived as self defense but nowadays it's gone way out of hand if even laughing too much kicks it off. Just food for thoughts. Many doctors seem to still like selling the idea that body isn't connected to the mind and that it's just an instrument to carry around our brains. Only because they don't understand better. Evolution has had plenty of time to make it so that isn't the case.

It’s funny you say that cause my science teacher had us do that in class. She said it simulates what someone with asthma feels like. I have asthma and I tried to breathe through a straw and it felt like I wasn’t breathing at all.

I’m actually really sick. With a cold rn and that triggers my asthma. My asthma goes away temporarily during the spring and summer, but during the winter and fall, I start to get pneumonia and soon I start to have short breaths. I’m honestly sick of having asthma and not being able to run without having to feel a tight feeling to my chest. I lift weights and run everyday. My short breathe comes as I do those things but I refuse to give up..honestly, it sucks to be this sick :/ people who don’t have asthma, you’re all lucky to be breathing normally. Make sure to stay healthy too bc asthma can happen to anyone.

Thanks for making an episode on asthma, I know what's it is like because since birth I have had serious asthma attacks yearly, although over the past 3 or 4 years it slowed down and got better till last year when pollen really affected me. I blame all the pollution, causing global warming thus causing a massive depletion in bees and other pollen transporters, causing over 250,000 people with asthma to die yearly! I plan to make changes to our planet in the future... Till then I will survive, hoping to save hundreds of thousands of lives in the future. Having asthma may be a disease but we are lucky, who knows what we could have had if we didn't have asthma, it's a gift really, we are lucky and all those other people without asthma, be/ stay grateful, we as asthmatics may be grateful but so should all others.
Thank you for taking your precious time to read all of this, I have taken my precious time to write it! Good Day to you all!!

For the 1st 5 years i experienced mixed symptoms from when i was 8. I didnt want to believe that i had asthma and refused to take the prescribed inhalers- society in South Africa believes that the more one uses the inhalers the closer they are to their death. Seeing the severity i finally accepted that i had asthma. Doctors just continuously gave me inhalers and never showed me how to properly use it. The struggle continued each year for 3 years thereafter until i met a male nurse(whome i feel like he was a nurse because i only ever seen him once) who took 2 minutes to show me wich inhaler to use for emergencies and wich for maintanance. Ever since ive been better. This is my 1st ever 365 days not ever been admitted to the hospital. Also if you are wondering how i still didnt die if i didnt use the inhalers, well, i was yound so my lungs where pretty strong, and also deep breaths during an attack helped me.
