Our Step-by-Step RV Rooftop Antenna Installation

- If you are going to drill a hole in your RV roof, then there are specific things that you must look at before proceeding. Before I started the installation of my Poynting 7-in-1 MIMO Omnidirectional Antenna on the roof of my Tiffin Phaeton, I consulted with many people that drill holes in RV roofs for a living, like satellite installers and RV techs. The considerations on where to drill a hole and the proper method to drill a hole are pretty unanimous. In this video, you will learn the things that I did during the install to ensure I was drilling in the right spot and avoiding areas where wires may be run. You will follow along as we evaluate the best place to drill the hole all the way to the end where we connect the Pepwave Max Transit Duo Cat 18 router to the Poynting antenna and run power to the device.

Well done Eric. When I told my wife "... I have to drill a hole in the roof of the RV ... " she was less than thrilled. But thanks to the excellent detail in your video ... I'm ready to go!
Great video Eric. That’s the same equipment that I bought from you and a very similar installation. I upgraded from a mofi 4500 and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Keep up the good work!
You did great on this video. It makes a difference seeing someone do what a lot of dread doing ourselves (putting holes in our RV). You instill confidence. Thank you.
Thanks, we are happy to share our experiences.
Eric
Thanks. That was extremely informative and I learned a lot. First time I’ve heard to use a small bit first.
It's nice that you use the same equipment that you sell. That is a real stamp of approval. The only thing that would be handier is if you sold an "install kit" as an add on with it. Include the dicor and the silicone and drill bits etc. Otherwise great videio
Awesome video. Great step by step instructions
Super informative. Now I know to start with the smallest bit.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for this video. I have been looking for a detail install such as this. I am looking to install my satellite dish antenna. great video
Glad we could help, Michael!
Great job and advice on how to plan when installing the roof antenna. Thanks
Excellent video, a budding new money stream while on the road 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤️👍🇺🇸
This was VERY helpful! Smart video. Thank you!
Thanks for this information and I like your video's
Nicely done Sir! But most importantly... ROLL TIDE!
Roll Tide!
Great job and video
Hello, thanks for the great video and explanation. Where can I get that white piece and what is it called? I mean the one you used on the roof to pull cables through and make it longer. Thanks in advance!!
When can you be in Bluffdale UT to do mine? :-)
Really nice job Eric. Just so happens that we have a '15 Phaeton so the "example" rv is perfect for us! The AC adapter we received with our cat12 duo, from yall, has a pretty small awg and it is not very long. I noticed in the video that you installed a different cord and plug. Did you just simply install an extension cord?
Hi Rick! We installed the Pepwave using the AC power cable that came with the unit and added a short extension cord, yes.
Nice job! Gave me the confidence I needed to try this w/ my '19 Allegro Red. Where do I find that right angle drill extension?

Has anyone seen one of these installed on the roof of a Winnebago Revel, class B? There's not much room up there.
Hey Thomas, I haven't personally seen that, but all you need is a foot of room between the antenna and any obstructions. If you can find that spot, you're set!
I did mine in a very similar fashion however, Poynting recommends the use of a ground plate when mounting on a roof such as this or you risk degrading your signal to a certain extent. Did you consider that in your install? I haven't noticed any major signal loss but I don't have much to compare against. Great video thanks.
Hey Scott, I spoke with my Pepwave rep prior to the install about this and they said it was not necessary. Basically, recommended, but not required, and my results were really good. Glad you got your unit installed, and thanks for the comment.
@Marc and Ria Tibesar In basic terms, a ground plate is something you mount below the antenna on the roof which creates a surface that reflects signal.
Great content. I am looking to install a Pepwave MAX Transit Duo in my Fifth wheel. What made you decide to use a sperate antenna other than what Pepwave uses for the routers? Thanks for the help.
Thanks, David. We added the rooftop mounted antenna because we wanted the additional power it provides. Our speeds were good when we were using just the antennas that come with the Pepwave, but they went up even more with the antenna mounted. This will come in handy when we are in areas with less signal than we have now. To give you an idea, without the roof antenna we had 51 Mbps down and 9 Mbps up and with the Poynting mounted on the roof, it went to 62 Mbps down and 26 Mbps up. Basically we wanted the best shot we could get at a good cell signal and a roof antenna gives us that.
@@Technorv Thank you for the explanation. We enjoy your channel.
@@Technorv I am curious, do you know if the Weboost Drive OTR Omnidirectional Antenna will work with the Pepwave MAX Transit Duo? I noticed that you sell Weboost products, but I couldn't find any content for the weboost install with a Pepwave router. Thank you, sir.
fantastic! With this antenna ... does it negate the need for a cellular antenna ?
Hi, this antenna for the Pepwave replaces the normal antennas that screw onto the back of the Pepwave. So basically it is the cellular antenna for the unit. I hope this helps. Eric
@@Technorv Eric thank you’. Michael w/ SCHECTER Guitars ⚜️
Does your coach have a TPO roof or fiberglass? I have a TPO roof and I believe that Dicor should be used instead fo silicone.
We have a fiberglass roof, and only used silicone to fill the hole as an added measure. To seal the antenna, we used Dicor where it attached to the roof.
Use silicone not dicore on Phaeton fiberglass roofs.
Very scary to me, Eric. I think I’m like Phil Farley; I’d rather pay a professional to install that antenna.
Yea, I gotta work on Phil a bit. hahaha
Don’t install a cell antenna near an A/C unit, it will cause interference.
