Great question. It really depends on where the image will be used. For LinkedIn, it's essentially a square. The most common ratios will be 2x3 or 4x5, whether vertical or horizontal.

The example shot you chose to use to show a cropped head is exactly what you said would look sloppy? ? ? ? ? ? As in its cropped through just her hand and not her actual face. Was that intentional - as in you were showing what not to do, or am I confused ?
